Bo keeps quiet, apparently still confused from the ghoul attack. He moves back and forth with the others through the caverns letting people pass where they must.

Day Five.
Village of Briarsgate, Beneath the Golden Grain Inn
(6)
Between 11pm and midnight, Thursday, October 20th, 576 CY.
Full moon, partly cloudy, damp, cold, misty.

Image

Cut off by fire, the adventurers search for a way to escape the winding warrens beneath the inn of the damned!

In a partially collapsed chamber (25), Ingrid retrieves her lantern and joins Moogeye in quickly examining the mound of loose, muddy earth against the far wall.

As the two brave women draw near, they can see the mound appears to be writhing! Emerging horrifically from its muddy surface, many snakes appear, drawn by the lantern light!

Image

It looks like a snake nest! A full, recent hatching! But these serpents are much too large to be snakelets. Unless...

Image

Suddenly a giant snake explodes from the mound! The titanic mud viper (GS), its skull 3 feet wide, hisses at her prey, eager to feed the hungry newborns!

Actions?

Image

Meanwhile, Pelias guards the rear flank. All of a sudden, vague, sinister shapes stir from within the pitch penumbra to the south, and loom into the light!

Villagers! Pelias recognizes them from last night. They were a part of the mad battle at the Golden Grain Inn! Both had been slain by Grothnak.

Now, still soaked in the blood of their death wounds, they had returned from beyond the grave, staggering, lurching, nearly insensate with anguish and hatred:
The murderous, loving mother of three (Z02) that the half-orc had cut down in the inn's common room only yesterday!

Image

And the bloodthirsty, sweet country doctor (Z05) likewise felled by Vadok's fury.

Image

Both living cadavers shrieked in unholy torment and malice as they advanced upon Pelias!

"Help! FIRE!" a villager bellows outside the Golden Grain Inn (6).

Hoom and Mouser use this distraction to steal away into the night's cold shadows, north and then west, away from the frantic shouting.

Moving stealthily between a fence and the river (at X), all they can hear is the water, and the wind in the trees. They look back once and see the midnight sky is orange with firelight and smoke.

"This is exactly the kind of delay we cannot afford!" growls Grothnak. He strikes at the snake's head but swings too low. The shaft of his weapon knocks Telkis in the head.

Bo stands his ground against this new, familiar looking enemy. Hoping that Pelias takes the lead against the zombie-like villagers, Bo attacks from right where he is if he can find an opening to do so.

Realizing Bo is still injured, Pelias steps to the front, cursing aloud. "Evil beings must be slain twice in this city, it seems."

He slices at the first undead that approaches.

Attack with long sword (THAC0 19) [1d20] = 2, damage [1d8] = 7

Grey Mouser, thief

Mouser and Hoom cross the river under the bridge, melt into the shadows among the trees, and move east to the point where they can observe the burning well and northeast corner of the inn building. Mouser's clairaudial ears listen all around for nearby dangers or snippets of the villagers actions dealing with the fire.

Telkis Brassfang, Gnome Fighter

"Half a step to your left, please, ladies," says Telkis, calmly. Moving forward to fill the gap, and to give Grothnak room to thrust with his halberd, Telkis swings Cranach underhanded, trying to catch the squirming monstrosity in the belly and get its attention.
Morningstar +1 (THAC0 18): To Hit:[1d20] = 19, Damage: vs s/m [2d4+1] = 5+1 = 6, vs L [1d6+2] = 1+2 = 3
Edit: I mistyped - changed "right" to "left."

Moogeye silently sidesteps to give Telkis some room, and joins him in prodding violently at the giant viper. She shows little emotional reaction at her inability to find a good connection with the blade of her pole arm.

Glaive-guisarme To-Hit [1d20] = 2 Damage (small) [2d4+1] = 6+1 = 7, Damage (big) [2d6+1] = 11+1 = 12

Day Five.
Village of Briarsgate, Beneath the Golden Grain Inn
(6)
Between 11pm and midnight, Thursday, October 20th, 576 CY.
Full moon, partly cloudy, damp, cold, misty.

Image

Suddenly a giant snake explodes from the mound! Without hesitation, the adventurers charge the nest of the venomous monster (GS)!

Image

Telkis advances and crashes his morningstar, Cranach, into the cyclopean serpent!

Moogeye slips on the mud and her polearm misses the writhing leviathan!

Grothnak follows behind the gnome warrior and his polearm also swings false, striking Telkis instead! (-2 hp)

Ingrid drops her lantern and lands a glancing blow to the armor plated scales of the colossal snake's underbelly!

The great serpent is completely unaffected by its wounds! The neonates writhe slowly beneath her, like tendrils of green flames, as she languidly rises up to loom over the heroes and hisses again to show a mouthful of poison-dripping fangs, each as long as swords! Inhuman, calculating eyes gaze hungrily while her long, forked tongue senses the glorious heat of this prey, and tastes the rich scent of their blood on the air.

But she does not strike!

Dawning realization suddenly hits the adventurers: the undulating, cold-blooded monstrosity is slowed by the chill air of this chamber!

Actions?

Image

Meanwhile more slain villagers, returned from the grave, close in on Pelias! The haunted corpses (Z02, Z05) lurch forward, howling in hellborne agony!

Avril pushes south, her holy symbol aloft, attempting to turn back the macabre cadavers with the power of her elven deity! But their unholy power is too great!

Pelias quickly steps forward to meet the loathsome remnants of humanity and slashes his longsword wide - KTANG! - against a tunnel wall!

A grisly horror (Z02) lashes out in retaliation but is rebuffed by the paladin's shrouded shield!

Long Bo drops his lantern and stands his ground, spear and shield ready, when suddenly another of the rotting carcasses suddenly appears from the northern shaft! (Z03)

Image

The druid recognizes this one as well, a village butcher still missing the arm that Vadok claimed last night! It sees Bo and begins wailing!

Bo thrusts his spear at the pallid creature and misses! It (Z03) strikes back and fails to connect! But Bo can see another behind it (Z17) and maybe more!

Hoom and Mouser hide in the shadows near the river. They suddenly abandon their plans to meet the adventurers in the graveyard, and double back. They follow the dark river east, and cross it beneath the old covered bridge.
bridge.jpg
bridge.jpg (393.89 KiB) Viewed 863 times
Soaked to the bone from the neck down, they scramble up the northern bank and shiver in the shadows of the trees and watch in the direction of the fire. The inn's stable blocks their view but they hear shouting, and can see flames spreading to the upper floor of the Golden Grain Inn! (6)

Mouser attunes his mind to eavesdrop in all directions. He hears the cold, patient river, dead leaves blown across the ground, Sephus eating a spider.

By the light of the full moon, Hoom sees a villager (V) descend to the river 40 feet away and quickly fill two buckets.

"What is it?!" Mouser suddenly hears a voice in his mind. A tired woman's voice, coming from the outer edge of his range, directly north. The larcenous dabbler in sorcery looks behind him and sees a tall, dark building 30 feet away (25). Vague shapes move behind unlit curtains on the second floor.

"The Golden Grain Inn. ...It's... on fire!?" answers a man's voice in a hushed, disbelieving whisper in Mouser's head.

The woman's voice replies, "Praise the goddess. Let it burn."

Grothnak groans, adjusts his grip, and redoubles his attack on the snake. Again he misses badly, smacking Telkis across the side of the head with his blade.

"This room must be cursed!" he cries.

Vadok (Halberd +1) (THAC0 19): [1d20+2] = 1+2 = 3, Dmg [1d10+4] = 2+4 = 6 (S/M) [2d6+4] = 9+4 = 13 (L) Seriously???
Vadok vs. Telkis: [1d20+1] = 14+1 = 15 [1d10+1] = 5+1 = 6 Oops.
Vadok (Halberd +1) (THAC0 19): [1d20+2] = 3+2 = 5, Dmg [1d10+4] = 8+4 = 12 (S/M) [2d6+4] = 6+4 = 10 (L)

I immediately regret our choice of fighting arrangement! How much damage did Telkis take there? 5? He's very resilient. :)
Telkis winces from Grothnak's errant swing. "Easy, Grothnak! Eyes on the snake!" he cries. He swings Cranach at the serpent again, suddenly very, very aware of the venom dripping from its fangs.
Morningstar +1 (THAC0 18): To Hit:[1d20] = 9, Damage: vs s/m [2d4+1] = 5+1 = 6, vs L [1d6+2] = 5+2 = 7

Ingrid Esthof, cleric

Khorst always taught her to exploit the weakness of the enemy. Seeing the numbing effect the cold has on the serpent, Ingrid gets an idea... something that might work, with a little luck. She imagines the coldest she ever felt, the wicked winter up North, and starts chanting -- backwards, channeling the biting chill towards the snake. When the last (that is, first) syllable us uttered, she touches the scaly skin...

Ingrid attempts to cast a reverse variant of Resist Cold = "Sensitivity to Cold". We discussed this with Inferno and he allowed it for this one time.

Touch [1d20] = 4 :(

Moogeye, who clearly has never cared much for snakes, finds it difficult to regain her footing in the soggy mud and strike with confidence. She throws a halfhearted thrust forward, knowing that to do so before she had recollected her wits was a mistake.

Glaive-guisarme To-Hit [1d20] = 1 Damage (small) [2d4+1] = 4+1 = 5, Damage (big) [2d6+1] = 4+1 = 5 …definitely a cursed room.

"Heironeus be with me!" cries Pelias as he hacks at the undead before him.

Attack with long sword (THAC0 19) [1d20] = 1, damage [1d8] = 5

Thought I'd join the fumble party.

Fumble results [1d8] = 4

DEX check (9) [1d20] = 3

The paladin swings with such vigor that he nearly falls to the ground, but a divine force seems to keep him upright.

Day Five.
Village of Briarsgate, Beneath and Near the Golden Grain Inn
(6)
Between 11pm and midnight, Thursday, October 20th, 576 CY.
Full moon, partly cloudy, damp, cold, misty.

Image

Within this nightmarish subterranean realm, some dread unspeakable curse, some evil otherworldly intelligence, some invisible malevolent hand, seemingly dooms the valiant adventurers despite their heroic efforts!

Standing in the shadow of the gigantic viper, Telkis misses with Cranach!

Grothnak strikes Telkis again, this time harder! (-6 hp). The gnome warrior fleetingly wonders if Grothnak had become one of "them."

Moogeye slips in the mud again and accidentally hurls her polearm hard against the wall behind the horrific leviathan! CRASH!

Ingrid casts a holy blessing to make the cold-blooded colossus succumb further to the bone-chilling frigidity, but cannot touch the scaled terror in order to enact the spell!

The great serpent suddenly sheds its lethargy like dead skin and hisses at its prey, once more tasting them from afar.

Image

It rears up its immense, hungry head and suddenly strikes forward at the unarmed Moogeye! Massive, merciless jaws crush down hard upon her torso, sword-like fangs injecting deadly venom deep within the brave young monk's body! (-2 hp. Please save vs. poison. Good luck.)

Actions?

Image

Meanwhile, the living dead villagers of Briarsgate, slain by the adventurers' own hands, close in to exact unholy revenge upon their murderers!

Avril wheels around at Long Bo's warning, and tries again to force back the new, heinous walking cadavers from the north channel (Z03, Z17)! Once more she finds herself powerless to affect them! Could it be the mysterious evil infecting this place?

Long Bo grimly thrusts his spear into the nearest carrion, an undead butcher (Z03), and impales his stomach! Sausage-like intestines rain wetly to the ground as the horror still keeps coming! Its savage claws cruelly butcher Long Bo! (-7 hp)

Behind it, Avril and Bo see the other unquiet corpse loom into view (Z17)!

Image

It was one of the grim faced men who descended the stairs last night, with leather armor and shortsword, and was slain by Hoom Feethos. His armor and weapon have since been taken from him.

"Fall back, sir," Avril selflessly urges the gravely wounded druid.

Pelais slashes wide again, nearly toppling himself in the restricting confines of the dark warren!
The undead, loving mother of three (Z02) screeches as her claws miss the paladin again!
Pelais wonders in bewilderment what fell, insidious power fouls the true aim of his virtuous sword.

Hoom and Mouser (X) shiver in the shadows of the trees and watch in the direction of the fire. Their view is blocked by the inn's stable but they see an undermanned bucket brigade starting (from V to 6), as lights appear within nearby houses, and shouting villagers urgently come running. The keen-eyed elf spies flames erupting from the roof of the Golden Grain Inn! (6)

Image

Mouser continues to eavesdrop upon the speakers in the building behind him (25).
  • "Who's coming to help them?" rasps the man's voice.
"The Twaines... Hewitt and his boys," whispers the woman.
"I never would have guessed they were with 'them'," the man murmurs.
"I don't believe they are," she replies softly. "I can't believe it."
After a moment of quiet, she continues listing, "Nowell Graven, Constable Allard. Where's Constable Onfre?..."
    "Who else?"
"I don't see the Weavers, or the Grooms."
    "Good."
"Nor the missing jeweler, of course."

Telkis starts to wonder if they shouldn't have backed out of the room the moment the giant snake appeared. Too late now, he thinks. He brings Cranach down in a tight arc, trying to stike the snake's body to attract its attention, if nothing else.
Morningstar +1 (THAC0 18): To Hit:[1d20] = 20, Damage: vs s/m [2d4+1] = 5+1 = 6, vs L [1d6+2] = 4+2 = 6
Quick, guys, the room is uncursed!! :D
I forget how we do crits... double damage? Whoohoo!
His enchanted morningstar connects with a satisfying THUMP! "Haha!! That should get your attention, you giant worm!" he yells.
