Grey Mouser, thief
"Too many," says Grey, regretting not following his original plan. "Can your swarm slow them?"
"Shall we go through the darkness to the top then?"
How close, by rounds, are the men?

Re: Chapter 9: Temple of Fear
Bo estimates the speed of the newcomers.
We have a bit of time before they arrive, I'd say. Maybe some oil on the stone steps will delay them. Do you have any left?
Those hounds will be here soon enough, though. A fiery inferno might slow them down a bit as well. Remember, these people are simply brainwashed thralls doing the work of their evil master! We should not kill them if we don't have to.
He points for his swarm to fly down the shaft and attack the beings ascending the stairs, hoping to slow them down. (centered on A3) The lanky human then slams his last two flasks of oil down hard on the steps about ten feet below the landing, splashing as much upon the wall as possible in the process. He sparks a flame to the accelerant before heading back up the steps to retrieve his spear.

Re: Chapter 9: Temple of Fear
Telkis instinctively twists and slips from the alien and revolting tendrils even as he swings Cranach at the next of the skeletons, trying to unravel its unholy life force.
Re: Chapter 9: Temple of Fear
Ingrid struggles with the unseen tentacles and breaks their bonds with the help of the Signet of Khorst and Pelias' holy aura.
Unable to invoke magicks within the silence, she rears back with her mace once again.

Moogeye slashes and thrusts with her glaive-guisarm after she regains her footing, still unable to make her mark.

Re: Chapter 9: Temple of Fear
Things look grim indeed. Pelias will see this through to the end, however, swinging his sword again at the skeleton he hit earlier.
Attack with long sword (THAC0 19) [1d20] = 12, damage [1d8] = 8

The Church of Merikka (21)
Village of Briarsgate, Gran March, Greyhawk
Day Seven. Night. Saturday, October 22nd, 576 CY
Cloudy, damp, cold, misty

BONG!
In the defiled house of worship, the valiant heroes begin to sense it; begin to realize.
Grim understanding sets in with a certainty as sure as death. Their desperate struggle to liberate this village is coming to its end; to the inevitable conclusion that had been patiently waiting for them since they first set foot through the gate of briar; to the only ending there ever could have been.
BONG!
Outnumbered and surrounded, were they to lay down their weapons now and accept their fate, none could blame them. The gods knew they had done enough.
And yet, on they fought. In the face of death and worse, they would not yield.
BONG!

Slavering, barking dogs race around the stone stairwell, eagerly closing the distance between their bright white fangs and the heroes' flesh.
Black hooded cultists follow in their predatory wake.

BONG!
The Grey Mouser finds no ascending steps on which to escape. The grey druid points down the staircase and his sorcerous, black cloud of buzzing flies descends and engulfs an advancing acolyte! (A3) He screams, futilely trying to evade thousands of ravenous mandibles.
SKAASHH! Long Bo shatters glass flasks of oil on the stairs below him and sets them ablaze in a roaring conflagration atop the marble! VWOOSH!
The droning insect swarm dissipates. The hounds and men keep climbing.
The death knell keeps tolling.

Eastward, beyond the shadow barrier and the sonic void, the desecrated priestess grows as still as the grave.

Her lips barely moving, Misha Devi waits for the heinous things from the crypt to complete their ghastly bloodshed. She also waits for something else...
Unseen snaking coils from beyond this world that embrace Grothnak in a chilling, preternatural stranglehold.
The malignant host of living cadavers continues its pitiless assault, ignoring the paralyzed half-orc.
Mute and deaf, Pelias cleaves a neck with a ruinous slash of his sword, decapitating a horrific corpse. (S5) Skull and bones come apart and crash to the floor.

Avril severs a gruesome, grasping hand before it can strangle her to death, yet its grisly owner still advances! (S6)
Telkis stoves in the skull of a charnel house carrion, but it keeps on pressing its attack! (S8)
Ingrid's iron mace deflects off a dead man's petrified sternum, as Moogeye falls beneath the bludgeoning of the fleshless horrors with a silenced scream!

"Not kill them... right."
Having enough moments to search before the hounds arrive, Grey seeks out secret doors that may allow them to reach the bell tower top.
"I've heard druids can sometimes charm animals?"

Infuriated, Telkis swings Cranach upwards through the body of the skeleton to his left that just took out Moogeye: "You're next!" he screams silently at the headless skeleton in front of him.
Re: Chapter 9: Temple of Fear
Even though this may very well be the end, Ingrid continues to react with calm resolve. With a downward crushing blow, she strikes.

Re: Chapter 9: Temple of Fear
Bo sees the thief looking around at the walls. He wishes he knew how the others were faring. Hopefully they all yet live, he thinks to himself.
He watches the lead dog and begins another incantation, this one allowing him to speak with the hounds for a short time. Speak with Animals
Hoping to convince the first dog to fill his friend in on what he is saying, Bo begins his spiel as soon as the spell is completed.
There, there friends!!! You have no reason to attack us, right? For it is your current masters that treat you badly, not us! I am sure that they don't feed you enough, in order to keep you mean and vicious. I will make you a promise that you know I will keep. I can communicate with you right? That makes me a lover of nature and ALL animals!!!
If you stop chasing us and instead turn to protect me from those that persue us, I will see to it that you live the rest of your lives out as pack leaders with all the food, drink, and females that you could possibly desire. Now turn on your masters and keep them from coming any further up the steps.
Hoping that this actually works, Bo begins fiddling around in his pouch to retrieve his most prized possession, his magical potion of transformation.

Village of Briarsgate, Gran March, Greyhawk
Day Seven. Night. Saturday, October 22nd, 576 CY
Cloudy, damp, cold, misty

Etheric invisible serpent tentacles sunder the fragile veil of reality and hold mighty Grothnak prisoner in a paranormal noose of icy flesh.

Helpless, the half orc warrior can only watch the slaughter.
Telkis' enchanted morningstar, Cranach, shatters a macabre human skeleton (S1) and another instantly takes its place.
Avril and Ingrid cannot break through the wild pandemonium to land a clean blow. And Pelias' sword strike, savage enough to fell a man, glances off another unyielding skull!

The corrupted Misha Devi seemingly speaks again, but weaves no more insidious black magicks.
Instead, she slowly, calmly walks toward the raging torrent of murder and mayhem.

Her horde of undying carcasses continue their deadly onslaught. Pelias' magic shield, emblazoned with the proud holy symbol of Hieroneous, defends him well against the unrelenting attacks, but Avril, Ingrid and Telkis all have wounds inflicted upon them by the cold, living cadavers. (-4hp, -2hp, -2hp respectively)
Avril Hollysword, elf-blooded angel of mercy, falls.
Suddenly...
BONG!
An earsplitting knell rings out.
BONG!
Misha Devi's foul incantations of silence and darkness have expired!
One square = 10 feet.

Moments earlier...
BONG!
At sly Mouser's suggestion, Long Bo voices an orison to the gods of nature, within a house of the damned.
As he prays, the oil borne flames, with no fuel to feed them, steadily wane.
As he prays, the evil cultists and baying hounds climb closer.
Closer.

BONG!
The druid ends his prayers and speaks to the dogs in the tongue of hounds.
At his words, the vicious curs slow and finally stop, listening warily to what he has to say.
Below them, the torch wielding acolytes keep climbing. They will reach the top of the stairwell in a minute!
The guard dogs eye Bo and begin to growl deep in their thick throats.
Suddenly, the shadow wall to the east dissipates and the sounds of dire battle can be heard!

"...and use your bones to make an end-table!" Telkis finishes screaming as the sounds of battle suddenly rush back in upon them. He locks eyes with the approaching sorceress and points, cockily, trying to get into her head: You're running out of skeletons, dear!" he cries before ducking and swinging again into the mass of undead.

Once able to speak, Ingrid begins intoning a prayer to banish the skeletons back into the darkness.

Re: Chapter 9: Temple of Fear
Long Bo stares at the two hounds sternly.
You must hold the line! Do not let any of those men past you! They must not be allowed to harm us further!
The tall man of nature leaves the dogs in the stairwell, hopefully doing just as he commanded. Now able to see and hear the others, he grabs up his spear again and then pulls his potion from his pouch. Drinking exactly half of its contents, he stows the rest away for later.......if there even is a later.
With some understanding of the forces that can change a man so, he quickly concentrates on transforming into a tiny sparrow that should easily be able to fly quickly over the heads of the combatants.
Once inside the room (if he can make it that far) he flies just past the evil cleric and begins to concentrate on another, much larger animal to change into next.

Pelias attacks with his sword yet again. He will attack the priestess if possible, but will settle for a skeleton if he can't reach her.
Assuming he sees Ingrid try to turn the skeletons, Pelias would wait a beat to have an opening at the priestess.

The Church of Merikka (21)
Village of Briarsgate, Gran March, Greyhawk
Day Seven. Night. Saturday, October 22nd, 576 CY
Cloudy, damp, cold, misty

Deep within the desecrated church, a dread foreboding of doom permeates all; perhaps because the heroes are locked in battle with living symbols of Death itself.
Unseen, occult coils writhe out from between the spaces Man knows to immobilize Grothnak.

Thus stricken, he is like unto a fierce statue while mere inches away, his friends fight for their lives. And their souls. Because in Briarsgate, there are fates far worse than death.
BONG!
At the top of the spiral staircase, the grey druid speaks to the savage attack dogs in their own language of snarls and barks. As the starving oil fire dies, the hounds' sinister masters reach the top step.
Unable to find a secret passage to escape, Mouser steps off the edge, seemingly to his death! He is swallowed up by darkness as he plunges down the center shaft of the stairwell, marble steps and wind hurtling up past him on every side. At the last moment he says the magic words and lands softly on his feet at the bottom! His mercurial magicks work this time! The little thief moves east to the open door and assesses deep shadows on his left.
High above him, curs bare their fangs. They eye Long Bo warily, growling deep in their chained throats.

Then they suddenly turn and bark murderously at their masters; somehow willing to bite the hands that feed them. The cultists yell commands to no avail.
The priest of nature drinks a magical elixir and impossibly transforms into a sparrow, flying east over the deadly battle between the living and the living skeletons of men.
BONG!
There, with an ardent invocation, Ingrid Esthof compels damned horrors back from her holy symbol.

As if struck by an unearthly thunderbolt, the living dead sizzle and burn before the sacred power of her lord Trithereon. But Misha Devi is ready for this.
"'Ai! 'Ai! Fhtagn! Thanarak! Vulg'th! Zhro!"
She utters forbidden blasphemies of mind and soul.

Somehow, her beautiful visage seemingly changes as she commands the dead to stay and serve her unholy master; to continue the dark mayhem they began. At her black order the corpses stop motionless, as if they were dead things once more.
Ingrid knows that she and Misha Devi will battle for control of these heinous, undead terrors. Unless...
BONG!
As Telkis splinters one of the macabre soldiers in the graveyard legion (S7), Pelias sees his chance. The paladin charges through the nigh-lifeless dead and, with a slash of steel, strikes down Misha Devi, cleaving open mortal flesh and bone. The defiled priestess is instantly killed and Grothnak is freed from his otherworldly prison. Suddenly, the lifeless cadavers flee through the center door in the south wall out of which, church bells toll louder.
The door shuts behind the procession of the dead. At a distance, to the west, men shout and dogs bark. A small brown bird wheels overhead. Bo and Mouser's whereabouts are unknown. And Avril and Moogeye lay motionless and insensate among the shattered bones of carcasses returned to everlasting death.

Cursing his reluctance under his breath, Bo rushes to the side of his fallen comrades. He changes himself into a gnome as he kneels down to help the girls. He has always wondered what it must be like to be a gnome. He shouts out to the others as he approaches.
"That damn bell ringing has brought the guards upon us! They are at the top of the spiral stairs now and heading this way! Bar that door somehow so we don't have to fight against them!"
He pulls out some wet herbs and begins chanting in a weird high pitched voice very much unlike his own over his wounded friends, touching them softly one by one, attempting to bring them back to the conscious world.

Startled by the sudden appearance of a fellow gnome speaking in Long Bo's voice, but encouraged by the fact it seems to be saving his friends, Telkis tries to play it off. He runs immediately to the door between them and the guards and shuts it, leaning on it while looking for a post with which to bar it. He's not had time yet to notice Grey Mouser isn't amongst them.
