Evening all

#1 Post by Thatguy... Dave? »

Right, so I've literally never played any form of tabletop rpg of any description, virtual or otherwise. I've always fancied the idea of it ever since the old Fighting Fantasy "choose your own adventure" books but have never lived anywhere with a group to get involved with.

Clearly Covid has made finding a group to join even more difficult but I read about PBP gaming and thought that sounded pretty doable, in the time between posting I can try and figure out what the hell's going on!

If anyone fancies having an absolute novice tagging along stupid questions, and let's face it, who wouldn't, then just give me a shout.

Welcome! Great username.
Yes PbP is a fantastic way to learn a game. And Unseen Servant is a very supportive place for folks new to RPGs. We are glad to have you, welcome again!

PS: as you may have noticed, your first post or two needs to be approved. After that the system knows you are a real person (bots and spammers not being real people) and you can post without delay, send Private Messages and join games.
This is a game about killing things and taking their stuff so you can become more powerful in order to kill bigger things and take even better stuff.
Alethan: I'm good with NOT pressing our luck this time.
mjulius: That's how I know I'm home.
Pulpatoon: The whole point of PbP is to take the scheduling pressure off the game. We're just chatty because we're so eager!
Scott308: ...everyone should be reminded of just how wonderful the people they play games with here can be in real life.
Leitz: Quality and quantity wise, I think US is the best I've seen.
Paladin: I can promise terror, glory, and riches...or a quick and brutal death.
Inferno: Come on! That's was Vicar's Head, a completely different doomed village!
Rex: I can move to the wait list to let someone else into the game.

Hey ... Dave!

Nice to have you join us. Welcome to the "table."

Welcome, Dave.

I'm sure there will be plenty of games available for you to join. If you're interested in the latest edition of D&D, which is probably more rule-intensive than earlier editions, I'm currently running three games and always welcome new players:

Due to my current work situation, they're currently running pretty slowly (approximately one update per week), so that will give you plenty of time to "catch up" on the rules (the Basic Rules are available to anyone for free online; all other rules needed (e.g. the full Player's Handbook) are also available to all my players) as the game is in progress.

Otherwise, check out the 'Looking for players or games' topic where there are plenty of games to choose from, of all sets of rules and systems. This site has an abundance of excellent gaming, with great users (both running and playing in games), so you're definitely in the right place.

Good luck!

Cheers all, will have a good read through the various links etc shortly. I assume that there's a mechanism for dropping into existing games?

You can always express your interest in a game by replying to the recruitment thread created for that game.

Or, most GMs probably won't have an issue if you reach out to them directly.

Welcome to Thatguy...Dave?

I too am a newbie to this site, but I've lurked for a bit before joining and have a friend who plays here regularly, so I think you will quite enjoy your time here. I too got my start with the Fighting Fantasy series so that is a very good introduction. Even managed to get Steve and Ian to sign a couple of my books. Welcome to the fun!

Just look at the games, read up a little on what interests you, and then read some of the player posts to see if that's a game you'd enjoy and be comfortable in. Send the DM a PM and ask if there's room. The more open you are about being new and the more willing you are to learn the more people will be stumbling over themselves helping you out.

Gaming is great fun when the game and group "fits" you. Find the right fit and you'll be hooked for life.
