End of the World (game description)

#1 Post by Inferno »

Welcome...

Image

The year: 2018. From out of space comes a runaway planet, hurtling between the Earth and the Moon, unleashing cosmic destruction!

Man's civilization is cast in ruin. Two thousand years later, Earth is reborn. A strange new world rises from the old: a world of savagery, sorcery and super-science.

Once and Future Earth (1e) is a post-apocalyptic sci-fi dungeon crawl set within the ruins of our long dead civilization, a strange wasteland carved into tyrannical kingdoms by mad, evil wizards; each inhuman, fearsome and bizarre.

Beneath the broken moon, resourceful adventurers will face shocking mysteries and extraordinary foes within a dead wizard's dungeon of impossible secrets.

Will you be one of them?

System: AD&D 1e. All standard PC races are available plus new, mutant races. No Unearthed Arcana except the Barbarian class.

Modules: The 1979 classic, In Search of the Unknown (B1), set in the post-apocalyptic science-fantasy world of the OSR masterpiece, Anomalous Subsurface Environment. DM customization is central to B1. I've customized it to fit the flavor of the game world.

Inspiration: Jack Vance, Robert E. Howard, Jack Kirby, Thundarr the Barbarian, Gamma World, Planet of the Apes, Doctor Who, comic books, Saturday morning cartoons, and other sci-fi pop culture of the late 20th century.

PC Details: PCs start at second level. No evil alignments. Creativity encouraged. PCs don't begin with technology. 2 posts per week for years to come.

One of the many sources of inspiration for 'The Valley That Time Forgot' is the classic TSR module from 1981, 'The Isle of Dread' (X1) by Tom Moldvay and David "Zeb" Cook, voted among "The 30 Greatest D&D Adventures of All Time" by Dungeon Magazine in 2004. Like most of Cook and Moldvay's stuff, it's terrific and full of pulpy goodness.

The Castle U.S.S. Enterprise begins a homebrewed adventure with many sources of inspiration, not the least of which is the concept behind the classic TSR module from 1980, 'Expedition to the Barrier Peaks' (S3) by Gary Gygax, voted among "The 30 Greatest D&D Adventures of All Time" by Dungeon Magazine in 2004.

S3 and 'Temple of the Frog' (DA2) by and Dave L. Arneson and David J. Ritchie are two of the earliest science-fantasy D&D modules and both feature a dungeon that is a spaceship. Originally published in 1975, DA2 was later re-released in 1986:

I'm using FASA's excellent and highly detailed 'U.S.S. Enterprise Deck Plans' for Star Trek the Roleplaying Game from 1983 to reinterpret this fantastic concept.
