The Church of Merikka (21)
Village of Briarsgate, Gran March, Greyhawk
Day Seven. Night. Saturday, October 22nd, 576 CY
Cloudy, damp, cold, misty

Elsewhere and earlier...

Image

The Grey Mouser pulls Hoom and the strange gnome out of their iron cages. "Wake up!
"The others are in trouble. We’re under the Church of Merikka. They’re all in on it. We gotta get out of here. Now! Can you walk?”

Hoom the elf struggles to speak, and then to stand. “Grey?... Are we dead?”

“No. Not yet. But we will be if we don’t hurry,” Mouser says, glancing at the cave door.

The freed prisoners are weak, slow to respond. Mouser says with growing urgency, “Hoom. Gnome. We’re not safe here. Understand? We have to go."

The dark, gnomish captive croaks, "Name's Urdur. I am hale enough." He collects his things from the wooden chest. "Does the name Onfre mean anything to you?"

"No," whispers Mouser. "Maybe. I dunno. The others might know. Ready?"

Urdur notices all but two of his oil flasks are missing, and half his coin. He rasps, "Let's get out of here."
Hoom is also missing half his coin. The elf slips on his leather armor and fastens the buckles they walk.

Lead by Mouser, they leave the cave of cages; the place they never thought they would leave again... alive.

They enter a dank cavern, 20 feet wide, extending left and right, beyond the illumination of Mouser's candle. (19)

Image

The cavern has one smooth side and one jagged side. They entered from its jagged side. To their left, at the edge of shadow, is a door set into the smooth rock wall. Mouser turns right. The crunching of rocks and stones underfoot seems deafening to their stimuli starved senses.

They advance 50 feet to cavern's end where a tall wooden ladder leads up to a circular trapdoor set into the rocky ceiling. (T)

Image

Mouser puts a finger across his lips and says, "We're entering Briarsgate's church now. We're still not safe there. No more noise." He scales the ladder and slowly opens the wooden hatch. They climb up into a small mediation chamber of wood and marble.

BONG! the church bell tolls.

Mouser leads them out into a dim warren of corridors (7). There is the smell of incense, and something else they can't place.

The tight, shadowy labyrinth opens into a dining room and private chapel for the clergy (5).

Image

Stained glass windows glow luminous with spectral moonlight. Upon the altar of blessed Merikka are profane sacrilege objects of defilement.

Image

BONG!

The tolling knell grows stronger. There is the sound of barking dogs and shouting men far away, but also getting louder with every step.

Mouser silently leads them through a secret door in the wall, into a grand marble corridor.

Image

The opulence reminds them that Briarsgate was once a prosperous farming community.
They are at the corridor's end, near a door that is ajar.

Image

BONG!

Tolling, barking and shouting are loud now. The trio peer through the crack in the door, into a magnificent, stone stairwell spiraling upwards. Torchlight flickers from above.

Image

Mouser whispers, barely audible, "Our friends are trapped up there, beyond those dogs and men. The dogs could be on our side. I don't know. The old druid did something to them.
"Hoom, do you have any magicks to get past them?"
he asks as he unsheathes Scalpel and Cat's Claw. "I just wish that damn, sanctimonious paladin could see me now!"

Meanwhile...

BONG!

Engulfed in flames, skeletal undead horrors attack!

Image

Telkis hurls his axe and it passes between the ribcage and pelvis of a fiery cadaver!

Bo turns away. He hurls his spear up into a small, high, stained glass window. SKRAASSHH! After collecting his weapon the grey druid assumes the form of a sparrow, ready to fly through the jagged hole to the night sky!

BONG!

Grothnak throws more oil on the fire, setting another gruesome corpse aflame! (S12)

Ingrid, Moogeye and Pelias hold their steel, waiting for the nightmarish carrion to come to them. It doesn't take long. In that brief moment, they glance behind them at Avril's body, laid out on the bench, and see that the valiant angel of mercy is breathing!

Then the undead funeral pyres charge through the burning transom, besieging the heroes closest to their fiery grasp!

Ingrid and Pelias move to meet the onslaught.

One charnel horror is consumed by the roaring flames in the doorway (S6), but the others savagely attack, one striking Moogeye Comcra dead!

Grothnak snorts with something like satisfaction. He knew the skeletons would not stay back to be pelted with flames. He brings Vadok around in a great arc that scatters fiery bones across the floor.

Vadok (Halberd +1) (THAC0 18): [1d20+2] = 13+2 = 15, Dmg [1d10+4] = 7+4 = 11 (S/M) [2d6+4] = 7+4 = 11 (L)

Ingrid sees the subtle rise and fall of Avril's chest and mutters, "Trithereon be praised! She yet lives!"

Hoping Pelias can hold against the boned horrors, Ingrid turns and rushes to aid of her fallen comrade. She gently places her fingertips on Avril's temples and recites a holy hymn of healing.

Sparrbow flies up and out of the broken window. He tries to get to the bell tower, staying low to the rooftops, just in case the magic of the potion wears off.

Along the way, he looks all around himself to determine if there are any others up here that may attempt to cause him harm.

He flies through the open tower to try to spot whoever is ringing the bell.

Hoom Feethos:

Hoom shakes his head, signaling to Mouser that he has no spells prepared. While stopped Hoom rests his pack on the floor. He slips his armor over his head and secures the straps. He then secures his pack to his back and draws his short sword.

The Church of Merikka (21)
Village of Briarsgate, Gran March, Greyhawk
Day Seven. Night. Saturday, October 22nd, 576 CY
Cloudy, damp, cold, misty

The investigators of Briarsgate have uncovered another secret cabal of unholy cultists hidden within the blessed church of Merikka.

Long Bo the druid, in the guise of a humble sparrow, flies out of the church through a broken stained glass window, into the night!

Image

By the cold light of the harvest moon, he looks down, across the forsaken hamlet of Briarsgate.

Image

BONG!

Church bells toll in the dead of night, waking the entire village. Every home is lit from within.

Bo sees a crowd of people with torches (near 13) heading toward the temple of Merikka (21).
The druid wheels on his wings and darts toward the church steeple.

Image

There he finds another heinous Goblin Man of the bordering Dim Forest, enslaved by the unnameable, vile forces that have infected Briarsgate. The twisted abomination pulls the bell rope with malicious glee.

BONG!

Actions?!

Below Long Bo, in the second story of the desecrated church, three living, burning corpses attempt to murder the valiant heroes.

Ingrid steps away from the charnel conflagration and rushes to the side of fallen Avril Hollysword, healing her with orisons of devotion to Trithereon (+8hp), saving Avril from death's cold grasp.

Avril awakens and instinctively reaches for her Elvish sword. Finding it gone, she sees that Pelias Blanchflower has borrowed it, to good effect...

Pelias, Telkis and Grothnak each savagely shatter a blazing skeletal horror, splaying fiery ribs and skulls across the blasphemed antechamber. (room 11)

Image

The battle is over. For now.
Selfless nun, Moogeye Comcra, lays dead. So does Misha Devi, the village priestess of Briarsgate.
The southern door to the belltower stairwell, lined with Goblin archers, is shut.
Then the heroes suddenly realize the barking and shouting through the barred, western door has died.

BONG!

Actions?!

On the ground floor of the corrupted church, in the stairwell leading up, Hoom readies armor and sword as Urdur and Mouser start climbing the spiral marble steps

Image

BONG!

Halfway up the stairs, they hear the raging dogs at the top fall quiet. Perhaps they heard the heroes ascending? The hooded cultists near them follow suit. From their shadowy vantage directly under them, Mouser and Urdur can see the cultists, but not the hounds.

Image

Torches held aloft, the profane acolytes peer down the dark shaft in the center of the steps, wondering why the curs have fallen silent.

BONG!

The insidious disciples haven't spotted the heroes beneath them. Yet.

Actions?!

This map is a 30' tall, spiral stairwell connecting the church's ground floor to its second story. PC positions are depicted by their initials. A=Acolyte. H=Hound.
Movement is halved for climbing stairs. It's 100 feet of travel, three revolutions, to ascend the 30 feet to the top.
Missile Weapons: Firing up: effective range is doubled. Firing down: effective range is halved.

"Avril!, You're alive?!" says Telkis, somewhat astonished. Noticing Moogeye has fallen, he is reminded of the random nature of life and death in a war-zone. Looking at the fallen monk, he is both saddened and resigned. "There's nothing for it but to push on. With that bell ringing, the entire town will be on us soon. We can't stay here long..." When the dogs stop barking he runs over to investigate, pressing his ear to the door in an effort to discern what is happening on the other side. Are they preparing to break the door down?

Avril stands up, somewhat astonished herself that she is alive. I just had the strangest dream... She readies herself and unsheathes her dagger. She says to Pelias I see you have my sword. I hope it did well by your hand. Are you still in need of it? Not waiting for an answer, she turns to Telkis It looks like you need healing. Let me help you. If in agreement, she lays her hands upon the gnomish fighter. Her eyes flicker and she mutters a small prayer:

Can I cast a spell at the moment? Does she have a CLW available? I'll roll for it anyway and if not, just say the word.

Cure light wounds: [1d8] = 1
GAH! Oh well...

Pausing en route to the door, Telkis readily agrees. After a moment he says... "...Er... did you do it yet? I can't feel anything..."

Bo flies up and lands directly behind the crazed bell ringing goblin as discretely as he can. If he isn't spotted, he reverts back to human form and pushes the little freak down into the stairway shaft. If he is spotted, he flies away before morphing.
If you need a roll...
Spear Attack [1d20] = 9 Damage [1d6] = 2 :?
I hope you don't need a roll.
(no bonus added for attacking unseen from behind)

Urdur Shimmerstone, gnome illusionist
Urdur holds up a finger, silently indicating to Mouser that they should stop. Urdur opens a flask of oil, and pours it out on the steps in front of him. He then pulls out his daggers. He first looks at Mouser, then points up at the acolytes on the stairs above them, indicating his daggers.

Then, assuming there is still time in this round to fire off 2 daggers, Urdur throws his daggers at the acolytes.
After making his presence known, Urdur runs down a few stairs towards Hoom.

Those who read face well will notice apprehension on Pelias' face. "While Bo fights, I fight.". The paladin votes for ascending the stairs, staying as close to the wall as possible to avoid missile fire.

But Pelias will do what the party votes to do.
