Pelias takes a knee. "The glory is yours Heironeus. In your light we will triumph over this darkness."

The paladin stands again and decapitates the corpse of Misha Devi. He does not want to see her rise again...and he wants to show the others serving this dark power that their priestess is dead.

Ingrid mutters a prayer of thanks to Lord Trithereon and rushes to assist Telkis with barring the door.

Freed of his unnatural bonds, Grothnak quickly whirls about looking for something to attack. Seeing nothing left to fight, he grunts in frustration and takes a position to guard Bo, Moogeye, and Avril.

The Church of Merikka (21)
Village of Briarsgate, Gran March, Greyhawk
Day Seven. Night. Saturday, October 22nd, 576 CY
Cloudy, damp, cold, misty

BONG!

In the dead of night, church bells toll. No living thing sleeps in Briarsgate tonight.

Within the temple of unknown horrors, Long Bo abandons the shape of the sparrow and makes a terrible discovery. Avril Hollysword, elven maiden of mercy, is dead.
Moogeye Comcra yet lives, and after a few minutes, the grey druid's reverent orisons return her to the waking world. (+7hp)

Telkis slams the door, inadvertently locking Mouser out. He looks around for something to replace the ruptured crossbar and finds tall iron candle-holders near the unholy altar. Ingrid helps him set them tight.

Pelias gruesomely beheads the mentally enslaved young priestess, Misha Devi. A grisly jet of blood sprays from the ghastly neck wound.

BONG!

Unleashed from the eerie chains of other-dimensional flesh, Grothnak stands guard over the others. The fearsome half-orc sees the stone chamber holds a profane candlelit altar, five wooden benches, a candle-ringed pentagram on the floor, and two doors on the southern wall.

On the floor, at their feet, lay scattered bones and grinning skulls...

Image

...and poor, valiant Avril.

BONG!

At the bottom the stone stairwell, Mouser hides in the deep shadows and listens. High above him, men shout and dogs bark.

None have yet to mention his 'death leap'. The thief remembers he would not be the first to commit suicide to escape the sinister powers that plague Briarsgate.

Finally, a dark cultist curses, "It's no use. They are bewitched by the wizard." He says something else that Mouser can't hear and two hooded acolytes bearing torches (A14, A15) descend the spiral stairway, racing down toward Mouser.

Telkis looks around the room. "What's wrong with Avril? We need to get her up and get moving! ...Where's Mouser?" He presses his ear to the barred door and listens for any signs of activity on the other side. If he hears nothing, he'll throw the door open and yell for Mouser.

Bo answers his fellow gnome to the best of his recollection.

"I witnessed the Mouser jump to his death! Right before my very eyes! If he didn't have a way to stop his fall, I'm afraid you will find his dead body at the base of the tall spiral stairs. I have no idea why he would do this, unless he was commanded magically to do so by the possessed priestess."

When he sees the holy crusader chopping at the dead woman's neck, his eyes nearly explode out of his head. He decides right then and there that these new friends of his might be more dangerous than good. He thinks it best not to lecture the paladin about the possibility that none of these townsfolk are actually evil and that they are all likely under the same possession, lest he lose his own head in the process.

Once Moogeye is healed and it is discovered that there is nothing anyone can do for Avril, He speaks to the 5 partners that yet live.

"Check both of the dead clerics for anything that might help us with our many wounds! We must press the attack before the entire village is upon us. This........ummmm.......beheading wont look good for us once the commoners see it. They will think that we are the evil ones plaguing this sorry town."

The little druid moves to the closest door and shouts at the fighters.

"If the majority of us are still healthy, we should continue clearing out this upper level and fast! Are we all ready? The magic from my potion wont last forever!"

With that, the druid uses the power of his magical potion to change himself into a huge grizzly bear, big enough to still just barely fit through the rooms doorways. He roars loudly to announce his presence just before he tears the door open with his massive girth and strong paws.

Ingrid spares a moment to close the eyelids of the fallen Avril. She says a quick prayer and rises, ready to seek vengeance as she follows the transformed druid to satiate her anger.

"He always seems to disappear when we are in the most peril" replies Pelias, somewhat unmoved. The paladin says a short, quiet prayer for Avril. If nobody else lays claim to it, he will also take her magical long sword. Once other useful items have been taken he will throw her body over his shoulder. "After giving her life to fighting the evil down here, I cannot bear to leave her body in such a place."

He listens at the door to the far left (east) for any noises on the other side. "I suggest someone else listen at the other."

BONG!

Courageous Avril Hollysword has fallen. The selfless half-elf escaped one dark fate of Briarsgate: mental domination by the sinister powers that hold the forsaken village under its ghastly sway. What her friends did next would determine whether she could escape another dark fate: being raised from the dead and damned to serve those sinister powers for eternity.

At Long Bo's request they search the dead priestesses' cadavers for anything to help the heroes avert their dark fate.
Pelias notes Avril's Elvish long sword, a masterpiece of craftsmanship far surpassing his own cold steel. (a +1 sword)
A ring on Misha Devi's finger catches Moogeye's attention. It has the Baklunish symbol of sanctuary and safe harbor. (a +1 ring of protection) This is perhaps the first valuable the heroes have found in the possession of a cultist of the unspeakable god. Moogeye informs the others of her discovery.
Beneath Misha Devi's black, blood soaked robes is a suit of banded mail that would fit Ingrid. (AC: 4, Movement: 9")

No healing magic is found among the clerics' corpses, but Bo, Ingrid and Pelias still have such blessings in their power.

Moogeye thanks the grey druid for healing her wounds. She joins Ingrid and Pelias in a battlefield prayer for Avril. Then she readies her weapons and gets her lantern alight.

Pelias carries Avril's broken body. Pelias and Telkis can hear no sound from beyond either door in the southern wall. Except one...

BONG!

Grothnak growls, "Let's find whoever is still ringing that damned bell and rip his head off."

Bo impossibly transforms into a towering grizzly!

Image

The lumbering ursine bashes open the unlocked door! CRASH!

Led by the hulking bear, the heroes burst into the next chamber; one both dark and deafening!

BONG!

By the light of Moogeye's lantern, they find the surviving legions of undead waiting patiently for them.

Image

The damned carrion-men stand guard over a door set into the western wall and another spiral stairway, this one ascending 30 feet to the bell tower.

Image

BONG!

In the shadows high above, archers line the stairwell.

But something is wrong with them.

They aren't Men.

They are twisted abominations; the heinous Goblin Men of the Dim Forest, cloaks dyed red from the blood of their victims. (G1-8)

Image

BONG!

The heroes remember that a scouting party of the Red Cloak tribe, sent to watch Briarsgate, had mysteriously gone missing seven moons ago. Here they are, now enthralled by the unnamable malevolent force that enslaves all in its ruinous path.

One atrocious Goblin Man shouts with gleeful hate above the din of the tolling church bell. “Capture them that our master may feast on their souls!”

Surprise: Neither side is surprised.

Climbing Stairs: Movement is halved for climbing stairs. Long Bo saw hooded cultists take over 2 minutes (over 2 rounds) to ascend a similar stairwell. It's about 100 feet of travel, three revolutions in the shaft, in order to ascend 30 feet to the top.

Missile Weapons: Firing up: effective range is doubled. Firing down: effective range is halved.

Taking Cover: PCs on the bottom of this shaft may take cover from the archers by clinging to the outer wall. For every -1 you take for your AC, you get a "-1 to hit" when firing missile weapons up.

"Goblins!" yells Telkis. Wary of the inevitable missile fire from above, yet knowing the undead must be beaten down first if they are to survive, he launches himself at S6, leaving the one directly in front of him for Pelias. (If he can't bash his way to S6, he'll attack S13.) "Someone rush the goblins if you're able!" he cries, desperately wishing he could be the one to deal with the vile little buggers...

Long Bear

"Grrrrsnarllllrggggrrrrrrr" exclaims the bear/druid, indicating that he is happy to take on the goblins.

He begins bounding up the steps towards them growling loudly, trampling past the skeletons if they are in his way. (I cant tell if those 3 skellys are on the steps or not) He hopes to scare the crap out of the goblins while drawing their fire away from the others.

If he can get by the undead, and it seems like his plan is working when arrows start flying at him, he will change his form again in mid stride. Reverting back into the tiny sparrow, and hopefully now much harder to hit with an arrow, he flies straight up above the heads of the highest four goblins as fast as possible and attempts to get behind them.

I'm not sure that I can do all that in one round but the plan will be to eventually get behind the top set of goblins in order to see if there is anything else that needs to be dealt with above them and maybe figure out who is actually ringing that damn bell.

If Bo cant get past the skeletons without them attacking him first, he will just turn into the sparrow immediately and fly straight up. What is the average air speed velocity of a......never mind. :D

Pelias launches himself at the nearest goblin, slicing with his sword. "For Avril...and Heironeus!" cries the paladin. He finds the sword to his liking - easy to handle and very sharp!
"Moogeye - stay out of the fray! You're in no condition to fight!"

"Nar thos!" shouts Grothnak up to the top of the tower. "Lulgijak! The cowards with flowers in their blood hide behind their bows! They are elves, not goblins! Elf women! Weak elf women! Sing us a pretty poem, weak elf women!"

He charges up the stairs if he can, hugging the wall for cover. If he can't get past the skeletons, he'll try to draw them back into the next room so he can dispatch them without having to dodge arrows at the same time.

BONG!

Image

Beset on all sides by the living dead and the insidious barbs of the Goblin Men of the Red Cloak tribe, the heroes steel themselves for battle!

Pelias implores above the deafening toll, "Moogeye - stay out of the fray! You're in no condition to fight!"
With regret, the injured nun leaves her lantern and retreats, guarding the rear should the dogs and cultists descend upon their backs.

Seeing the stairs impassable, Grothnak tries to draw the haggard revenants out, joining Moogeye in the previous room. None will follow. It becomes clear to the half orc veteran, the undead terrors have been ordered to guard the western door and the stair.

BONG!

High above, the heinous Goblin Men evince no fear of bears, nor do they react to the vicious taunts of Grothnak. The heroes remember the enthralled villagers they battled at the Golden Grain Inn had unbreakable morale, and resolute determination of purpose.

The degenerate mockeries of elves rain death down upon the heroes.

Image

A sadistic plague of spiteful arrows mercilessly pierce all who remain in the chamber!

The results are devastating! (Ingrid -2hp, Bo: -6hp, Pelias: -6hp, Telkis: -10hp!)

Image

BONG!

Long Bo magically transforms his shape into a sparrow and flies straight up behind the ranks of abhorrent cannibal archers.

Arrows sizzling around her, Ingrid tries to turn back the macabre horde and fails. Trithereon's power seemingly holds no sway in this unholy sanctuary of evil.
The charnel house horrors attack! Their grasping dead hands are beaten back with shields, bludgeons and swords!

Telkis savagely cracks open a skull but the grisly cadaver (S13) does not fall.
Pelias wields his new elvish blade, hacking a spine in twain! The carcass collapses (S10) and more are ready to take its terrible place!

Wincing, Pelias agrees, retreating.

I assume we can back up 10 feet or so. If the skeletons follow, he will attack them.
