Re: Chapter 6: Beneath the Inn of the Damned
In his heavily wounded state, Bo makes a fighting retreat, but it looks more like a falling retreat. He hopes that Avril can cut this abomination down before it does so to him.
If Avril is able to block the tunnel, he will try to strike with his spear from behind her.

Grey Mouser, thief
Mouser pads east along the tree line 30-40' to have a view south to the northeast corner of the burning building. He continues to keep a clairvoyal ear open.

"Bo, Avril, fall back! We must fight them on one front only!" cries Pelias. The paladin's face is drawn tightly, set in grim determination. He will back up, trying to allow Avril and Bo to retreat and enable fighting only one zombie at a time.
Re: Chapter 6: Beneath the Inn of the Damned
Moogeye yelps in pain as the poisonous fangs rake her body. She repeatedly brings her heel up hard against the side of its skull as she twists out of its poisonous maw, hoping that the fangs do not connect enough to inject their poison. With her weapon lost behind the giant snake, she brings her arms up into an aggressive position.
Save vs Poison (13): [1d20] = 16

Re: Chapter 6: Beneath the Inn of the Damned
Day Five.
Village of Briarsgate, Beneath and Near the Golden Grain Inn (6)
Between 11pm and midnight, Thursday, October 20th, 576 CY.
Full moon, partly cloudy, damp, cold, misty.

Beneath the forsaken village, in twilight underworld regions seemingly at the crossroads between reality and nightmare, the adventurers fight for their lives against cold, bloodless horrors, and coldblooded ones.
The mammoth serpent (GS) snaps its gigantic jaws upon Moogeye and lifts her up to the cavern’s ceiling, impaling her with deadly, poisonous fangs!
Moogeye miraculously survives the fatal toxins!
Cursing, Grothnak misses again with Vadok, but this time doesn’t strike Telkis.
Ingrid attempts once more to touch the vast, writhing asp to increase its inherent vulnerability to cold, and fails!
Telkis slams his enchanted morningstar into the enormous reptilian behemoth, shattering ribs and vertebrae!
Moogeye struggles in the monstrous viper’s jaws and smashes its gigantic head with an open palm strike! The thing opens its maw, dropping Moogeye to the chamber floor in a heap!
The great serpent lolls and collapses to the ground, its titanic, limbless frame spasms, bleeding and hemorrhaging. Then it goes still, eyes rolling back in its huge head, long forked tongue hanging limply from its slack, open mouth.
Its countless oversized young sense their fallen mother, and begin to burrow into her, feasting; horrifically devouring her flesh and blood as her heart beats its last.

Actions?

Meanwhile, ghastly undead villagers close in on the adventurers’ rear flank!
"Bo, Avril, fall back! We must fight them on one front only!" cries Pelias. The paladin's face is drawn tightly, set in grim determination. He backs up, trying to allow Avril and Bo to retreat and enable fighting only one horror at a time.
As he turns, Pelias sees another abhorrent carcass in the northern tunnel (Z04), yet another victim of Grothnak’s halberd from last night, a local man whose nose was red and vein-ridden from too much drink. Now his distinguishing feature was gone.

Avril, Bo and Pelias move west to create a bottleneck for their baneful, damned adversaries. As they do, the mother of three (Z02) and the impaled butcher (Z03) lunge savagely at the retreating heroes. Pelias’ armor and shield protect him, but Bo falls before the ferocious claws of the loathsome, disemboweled butcher! (-4 hp)
Leaving his lantern behind, Avril struggles to drag Bo’s large, unconscious frame down the western shaft and Pelias falls back with them, facing the malignant host!
Avril casts a holy blessing of healing magic upon Bo and he awakens! (+5 hp)
The carrion butcher (Z03) charges Pelias and the paladin nearly beheads him with his longsword, but the unspeakable creature fights on, attacking with his one remaining arm, and viciously wounding the paladin! (-5 hp)
Actions?
Map: DM Notes:

Outside, Hoom and Mouser (X) stealthily creep east through the dark shadows of the treeline on the river bank. The voices within the building to the north (25) fall silent, out of range of Mouser's magic alchemy.
The two shivering thieves slink far enough to see the Golden Grain Inn (6) ablaze with flames!

The structure must have been unsafe; it's going up like a tinderbox.
The bucket brigade to the pond still hasn’t enough men yet.
Mouser suddenly hears voices to the east, coming from the Millhouse (26).

“Come on, boys,” a man says gruffly in Mouser’s mind.
Footsteps. Someone pushing a wooden chair on a floor.
“Can I come too, pa?” says a boy’s voice.
“No, son,” says the man firmly. “Stay here and mind your mother.”
“Aw, I never get to do anything!” complains the boy.
“Hurry, boys, and watch your manners,” says the man. "These are our neighbors and we'll help them. But don't lose sight of me. And don't get into trouble."
“Yes, pa,” says several young men.
A door opens and Mouser hears several men coming directly toward him and Hoom, from the Millhouse! (26)
Actions?
X marks Hoom and Mouser. Each square = 20 feet.
Lighter area marks visibility, but the flames of the inn (6) can be seen through the misty darkness.

"Well done," says Grothnak. The nostrils of his wide, snoutish nose flare. "But our forces are split and the cowardly villagers' fire grows larger. We must rejoin the others and find an exit from this place with no more delay!"

Re: Chapter 6: Beneath the Inn of the Damned
Long Bo is getting very frustrated with his inability to remain upright.
Avril! Let us retreat into the larger chamber and let some of the more healthy fighters slip past us. These zombified townsfolk that we already killed once are proving to be more effective than even I could have imagined.
Bo will try to shimmy down the tunnel to let whoever wants to get past him.

Re: Chapter 6: Beneath the Inn of the Damned
Moogeye wastes no time in idle banter. She steps over the dead snake to grab her lost weapon, trying her best not to step into piles of the slithering infants.
Weapon in hand, she follows Grothnak to regroup with the others.

Ingrid Esthof, cleric
Ingrid is frustrated by not being able to work her spell, well, at least the snake is down... But these wretched tunnels provide no rest. She cannot see what's attacking their rear guard, but she places her bet on the undead - AGAIN. She grabs her mace and moves towards the entrance of the chamber. She knows that right now she is in a better state, than most of her fellow adventurers.
The instant she sees an enemy, she strikes:
Mace (THAC0: 20): To Hit: [1d20] = 20, damage: small [1d6+1] = 2+1 = 3 / large [1d6] = 1

Re: Chapter 6: Beneath the Inn of the Damned
Telkis will get a peek at what's going on in the tunnel, see that there's no room for him and yell to the others. "If you make a fighting retreat and back into this room, there's a spot here where we can take them two to one. I wouldn't worry about sportsmanship, Pelias!" he says, anticipating the paladin's sense of honor, "They're zombies!"
In the meantime, he'll start stomping and smashing baby snakes with his morning star. "Take that, you baby vermin!!"

Grey Mouser, thief
Mouser looks at the Millhouse as he clairvoyally hears the men. The thief judges the building 30' or so feet away. As they leave, he motions to Hoom and hides behind the trees in the shadows.
"Men from the east," he whispers.

From the partially collapsed, subterranean chamber, Telkis cries to the others, "If you make a fighting retreat and back into this room, there's a spot here where we can take them two to one. I wouldn't worry about sportsmanship, Pelias!" he says, anticipating the paladin's sense of honor, "They're zombies!"
Then the gnome set to work on reptile infanticide; pulverizing the feasting neonates with his morningstar!
Avril, Bo and Pelias see the wisdom of this and fall back down the winding tunnel.
As they withdraw, the disemboweled, one-armed butcher (Z03)...

...savagely pounces at the paladin again, ripping his arm! (-3 hp)
Pelias manages to retrieve Bo's lantern as the trio retreat and regroup with the others in the increasingly-crowded snake cavern.
There, Moogeye retrieves her polearm, and Grothnak sees, in the shadows of the northern wall, crude iron manacles bolted into the stone wall, and imagines what this chamber was used for.
Ingrid meets the butcher (Z03) with a fell handed swing of her mace, caving in the thing's skull and crashing him dead to the floor!
The undead loving mother of three (Z02) unhesitatingly leaps over the butcher!

She lunges at Ingrid, frantically biting and slashing with claw-like nails! (-4 hp)
The adventurers had cleverly maneuvered the heinous creatures into a disadvantageous position, but the party were now cornered by the legion of unholy abominations!
Actions?
Map: Each square is 5 feet. Movement in the tunnels is halved.
Only the illuminated areas, that were visible to any PC this round, are shown.
Red marks the dead or unconscious.

Outside, a door in the Millhouse (26) suddenly opens and several men come rushing in the direction of Hoom and Mouser! The five figures are backlit by lanterns at the door, held by the miller's wife and youngest son.

"CAW! CAW!" warns Sephus the crow from above.
The men move closer and closer to the hiding thieves until: "Hey Pa! There's someone here!" shouts one of the young men in complete surprise as he points at Hoom hiding behind a tree!
Actions?
Map: X marks Hoom and Mouser. The five men are just east of the X. Each square = 20 feet.
Lighter area marks visibility, but the flames of the inn (6) can be seen through the misty darkness.

'I loathe snakes', says the monk, stomping on the squirming infants with Telkis. She focuses her efforts at the rear end of the giant snake's carcass, using her dagger as needed to scoop away infants and hack into the carcass to reveal what lies beyond. 'This creature might have come in through a tunnel. Not that I'd prefer crawling through vipers to fighting our way out in the traditional manner, but it would nonetheless present an alternative.'
