So It Begins (character creation)

Class: In keeping with Tolkien's Middle Earth, there are no PC Clerics, Druids, Paladins, Illusionists, Assassins or Monks.
Dwarves may only be a Fighter.
Elves may be a Fighter, a Magic-User, or a Fighter/Magic-User. (see house rules on Magic)

Men may be a Fighter, a Ranger or a Thief.
Dunedain may only be a Ranger.

Unseen Servant dice roller will be used for tracking all rolls. Campaign Code is 766.
The world is an alternate reality of Tolkien's Middle Earth. No one may play any existing character from the books.
I anticipate a mixture of investigation, roleplay and combat in wilderness and underground settings. Roleplay over rollplay. Creativity encouraged. Please honor the tone of the genre. And have fun. Thanks!

Feel free to discuss your character ideas with each other in this thread. Thanks!
Re: So It Begins (character creation)
I want to create a gnome illusionist.
Oh, wait...

In all seriousness, my early instincts have me leaning towards one of the following:
---
Okay, I think I'm locking myself into playing a hobbit. My class (or classes) is still undecided, but it's unlikely I'll play a single-class fighter.

- Hobbit, Fighter/Thief (or just Thief)
- Elf, Magic-User (Note: Added after reading this.)

Have a look at the House Rules before getting too far into character creation.

Re: So It Begins (character creation)
I was thinking about/have character ideas for:
- a hobbit fighter/thief
- an elf fighter
- an elf magic user
I’d be happy with any, depending on what other people want to do.

Any restrictions on weapons? Could an elf fighter have a glaive, for example?

I'm up for a dunedain ranger if that fits with others wishes.

Weapons should reflect the flavor of Middle Earth.ChubbyPixie wrote:Any restrictions on weapons? Could an elf fighter have a glaive, for example?

Come to think of it... everything should!Inferno wrote:Weapons should reflect the flavor of Middle Earth.

Ha! If ever there was a game without character balance, this is it.ravenn4544 wrote:I'm up for a dunedain ranger if that fits with others wishes.
I mean, 13 dwarf warriors and a hobbit!

Ok. I’ll go by the rule that if I can find an Alan Lee drawing of then it’s valid. I did find a glaive-ish elf weapon.Inferno wrote:Weapons should reflect the flavor of Middle Earth.ChubbyPixie wrote:Any restrictions on weapons? Could an elf fighter have a glaive, for example?

Cool. Some of the elvish stuff gets pretty samurai looking.ChubbyPixie wrote: Ok. I’ll go by the rule that if I can find an Alan Lee drawing of then it’s valid. I did find a glaive-ish elf weapon.
Re: So It Begins (character creation)
I will be playing a dunedian ranger as well
Elbenwin of Dol Amroth, Elf-Friend
His families blood line has remains pure and can be traced all the way back to the Edain in the first age in the house of Hador, andwere among those who settled Numenor. Elf blood exists in his ancestral bloodline dating back to the first age as well as a distant relation to Anarion.
While his two older brothers left Dol Amroth and the kingdom of Gondor and traveled to join the Rangers of the North. Elbenwin remained behind to serve with the swan-knights of Dol Amroth.
Elbenwin seeks to free the land from the tyranny of darkness and return Dol Amroth and the kingdom of Gondor back to it's place of greatness in middle earth.

Re: So It Begins (character creation)
I’m thinking.....
Maybe
Hobbit thief
Dwarven fighter or
Elven magic user
But I’ll play anything if there is a need for something else.

Re: So It Begins (character creation)
I usually play a cleric, ranger or thief. I have a feeling we will be ranger and thief heavy, as should be in such a game!! So no 1/2 orc defectors allowed?
I’ll go maybe elf MU or a fighter. But I’m with Ogre Mage, I’ll play whatever. I don’t think I’ve played an MU in a while, which may be a good thing considering Inferno is changing them up a bit. Gonna be fun!!

This is a game about killing things and taking their stuff so you can become more powerful in order to kill bigger things and take even better stuff.

Re: So It Begins (character creation)
I'm leaning towards a burrahobbit thief as well. Shall we draw straws (or roll dice)?
EDIT--do halflings in 1e get the +3 with bows/slings that they get in OSRIC? I can't find my 1e PH.....

How do we know you're not a donkey-brained man?
Re: So It Begins (character creation)
They get it in the MM but not the PHB I believe. But either way Inferno, usually, allows it.
