New here, young to Table Top rpgs

#1 Post by YamItheonly1 »

Hey guys quick intro :D I have been playing various forms of table top rpgs for just over 6 years now. I started playing a weird amalgamation of B2:Keep on the Borderlands from basic DnD with characters made using a 3 and 3.5 character generator me and friend found online. After that first game I was hooked (somehow) so I began to do some online research and came across the OSR and retro clones. I grabbed up Labyrinth Lord and devoured the main book and the AEC. I started to DM for my 2 friends and we would play 2-3 times a week (high school was an amazing time). After high school my gaming sort of dropped off as I got involved in work. About a year after high school my younger brother introduced me to a friend of his that also played DnD. I quickly made friends with this guy and found out that he was playing in a Pathfinder campaign. A quick look of the rules online and I realized that these rules were similar to the character creation I had done so long ago. I joined this group and enjoyed a good long year of player time, occasionally running a game when the DM was busy or we only had a few players. While pathfinder was fun it wasn't the retro DnD that I thought myself how to play and DM, after some looking around I settled on 2e DnD, it had the harshness and descending armor class that I liked, and with the kits and skills my friends could make their characters the way they wanted.

Right now I am currently living vicariously through 2 brand new DnD players that I introduced to 2e in an online game. After DMing for the last 3 years with very very few games as a player I have come here to find some PbP games that I can partake of as a player, and maybe I will start a PbP later.

Sorry for the long post, I hope to go adventuring with you guys and gals soon :geek:

Welcome, Yam!

(Sorry... that is forever your name on this forum now.)

Interesting introduction to D&D there. Not your typical, "I started with the red box set in high school circa the mid 1980's" kind of start a lot of us have.

Regardless, welcome to the forums; make yourself at home.

We have a SPAM-preventative two-post approval rule on the forum. After your second approved post, you'll be free (under the confines of the site rules, of course) to post at will.

Cheers,

Al

Welcome! We'll be sure not to confuse you with another user SweetPotatoItheonly1, who looks a lot like you but is certainly a different user.

Lots of good Labyrinth Lord and other retro-clone games out there! I run a couple myself and I'm sure you'll be able to find one or more that suit your tastes just fine!

Welcome, YamItheonly1.

It's funny, when I first came to this site, while I was familiar with "basic" D&D (e.g. Labyrinth Lord; see: 'Comparing the Editions'), the vast majority of my background was with 1e. I was introduced to 2e only after I started to game here, and actually found I preferred it to 1e and adopted it as my default edition of choice.

Until...

In late 2013 a fellow board member (hedgeknight) introduced me to the concept of Adventure Paths, which as I'm guessing you know, were developed by Paizo for the Pathfinder game. I've been amassing a collection of Pathfinder material and, the more I read about it, the more intrigued I am by it.

In fact, one of the things I like most about it is the concept of ascending armor classes (not the other way around)! :D

There's a good group of gamers here, so I'm sure you'll fit right in, and will hopefully catch on to a game soon.

In fact, if you're interested (and able to post once a day), feel free to check out the 2e game I'm running in my signature. I'm also going to be starting a Pathfinder game relatively soon, but since I'm not nearly as familiar with it as I am 2e, I will likely be starting with a more casual and informal game to start, just to get some actual experience with the system before diving into something more serious.

Anyway, welcome aboard, man.

Welcome aboard.
On November 2nd I will be participating in another 24 hour game of Dungeons & Dragons as part of Extra Life. This organization uses gaming to help raise money to donate to children's hospitals. I'm raising money for Marshfield Children's Hospital in Marshfield, WI, and all money I raise will go to that hospital. All donations are tax-deductible. Please take a moment to check out my donation page below. Thank you.

You'll find it one of the most supportive boards as well. If you need help at any point, just ask.
Welcome!
--Ron--
This is a game about killing things and taking their stuff so you can become more powerful in order to kill bigger things and take even better stuff.
Alethan: I'm good with NOT pressing our luck this time.
mjulius: That's how I know I'm home.
Pulpatoon: The whole point of PbP is to take the scheduling pressure off the game. We're just chatty because we're so eager!
Scott308: ...everyone should be reminded of just how wonderful the people they play games with here can be in real life.
Leitz: Quality and quantity wise, I think US is the best I've seen.
Paladin: I can promise terror, glory, and riches...or a quick and brutal death.
Inferno: Come on! That's was Vicar's Head, a completely different doomed village!
Rex: I can move to the wait list to let someone else into the game.
