Y2156.12.11 Decuir - Gus, Hol & Tut [Textile Trade]

#1 Post by atpollard »

Y2156.12.10:2200 Decuir (scene 1: arrival)
Gus, Hol and Tut left directly from the Camp in one of the large trucks that you had rented until Y2157.01.01 at the request of the owner that just wanted his trucks out of Brulantfort during the trouble. You were in a 30 tonne truck (20 tonne cargo capacity) and had driven 16 hours, taking turns at the wheel. As the day progressed, dark clouds rolled in and you were just waved through the checkpoint in a torrential downpour. The last half hour of the trip had been the most difficult as rain reduced natural visibility and the road had become a small stream.

Driving between the trees as the only visible way to identify the road, the giant tires plowed through water nearly a foot deep that seemed to flow gently across the roadway. Ahead, surrounded by total darkness, was the bright glow of the 100 meter glass cubes elevated on stilts 15 meters above a broad River of water flowing across the narrow strip of land that separates the giant inland lake from the ocean. The truck made its way towards the elevated community of Decuir through knee-deep flowing water.

From your prior visit, you remembered a giant elevator near the Industrial Cube and headed towards it. Fortunately, the ground near Decuir was a little higher and the water was less than a foot deep (tending to flow around the support pilings). The truck entered the giant elevator and was lifted upward, water pouring down through the open grate floor, and exited in a giant parking garage on the lowest level of the elevated Industrial Cube.

“Helluva night to travel.” greeted the Security Officer as he assigned you a storage space for your vehicle and inquired about your business. You didn’t sense that he was prying or interrogating, but rather, that part of his job involved directing people how to get to where they were going. Part Police Force, part Tourism Council.

You are advised that Decuir has four shops (which will all be opened about 0900 tomorrow), three restaurants/cafes (only 1 of which is presently open) and a 17 room Hotel (if you need a place to sleep tonight).

[You will ultimately want to contact “Felix Bellinger”, the Factory Manager that Tut made friends with on his last visit … the man who “knows somebody” selling Textiles.]

"Just doing some trading, we need some place to sleep and dry, do you recommend the hotel or will that empty space over there will do."

Points at empty parking places.

"Food to, if they deliver. I'll buy for you to, if you want."

The Security Officer informed you that the Cafe didn’t deliver but it was close by. He walked with you making small talk that trucks arriving at all hours was something that Decuir was used to and welcomed the trade. The parking area was located on the lowest level of the windowless elevated Industrial Cube. Twelve levels up was a small Cafe that was open 24 hours and served coffee and breakfast ranging from light and fast to plates piled high running from Cr 1 to Cr 3 for a meal. You could see that it seemed to cater to the factory workers as the dominant clientele.

The Officer just had coffee and directed you to a glass bridge that connected the Factory Cube to a large glass Residential Cube adjacent to it. “The Hotel is just across the bridge, you can’t miss it” he offered before returning to his patrol.

He was right, it was just a short walk across the bridge and the Hotel Decuir was featured prominently. Rings of buildings suspended by vertical piers running through them surrounded a giant open space in the center of the approximately 100 meter glass cube. The underside of the buildings suspended above were lit with panels that provided a soft “dusk” glow to the cavern and the roofs of the buildings below were covered in gardens. Through gaps in the rings of buildings, you could see the cloudy sky and the rain falling on the glass cube. Inside the cube was a perfect shirtsleeve atmosphere.

Rooms at the Hotel ran Economy (Cr 5), Standard (Cr 15) and Suite (Cr 35) per person per night [roughly SOC 4, SOC 7 and SOC 10] varying mostly in area, view and amenities. The beds and cleanliness were all comparable and designed to get people to return. “Would you like to schedule a wake-up call?” asked the clerk as a robotic tram took your bags and guided you to your rooms.

Tut hands the desk clerk a 10 credit coin.

Tut will cover any extras with his personal money, we had a long bad day driving in rain we need some comfort.

Y2156.12.11:0800 Decuir (scene 2: PetroChem)

The group enjoyed the cold beers and watching entertainment on the giant screen. In the morning, you woke, took hot and refreshing showers and feasted on a complimentary “Continental” breakfast.

Tut had heard from his friend, Felix Bellinger, the foreman at the Petrochemical factory where he sold the barrels of Strong Alkali and Strong Acid previously, that he had a lead on some Textiles at a Bargain. So, Tut led the group off to Decuir PetroChem to talk to Felix.

Felix greeted Tut and Hol warmly, remembering you from your recent visit. “Thanks again for those chemicals. You really came through for us.” he said. Then Felix related to you that he heard that Emile Levesque, a young paper pusher transferred from the main office somewhere, to run the Decuir Textile Mill had run into trouble with a cancelled order that he got stuck holding at a time when he needed to get rid of it fast. “It seemed like just the sort of opportunity that might interest you.” said Felix.

"Well on your say so, it was worth it to hire a truck and head out here. If it works out, I will drop you a finders fee. Also this is Gus, a new man in our conglomerate.
When do you have time to to introduce us?"

Y2156.12.11:0900 Decuir (scene 3: Decuir Textile Mill)
Felix was happy to escort you over to the Decuir Textile Mill to make an introduction to Emile. When you arrived, the young administrator could not be located. You were informed that he would not be in the office until about 1300 this afternoon.

The trip took a strange bounce when a woman named “Sam” stopped Felix to chat about what brought him to the Mill? Sam was a naturally outgoing person that seemed to easily make friends and conversation … It came as no surprise to learn that Samantha Charon was head of sales at the Decuir Textile Mill.

Her eyes lit up when she heard that y’all were here to talk with Emile about his “dead lot”. With a broad smile, she invited you into a conference room “Let’s just have us a little private discussion” she said … guiding Tut, Hol and Gus into the comfortable room with coffee and snacks as she ‘shooed’ Felix back to work finishing that order of high strength synthetic fibers they were waiting for.

Sam asked about your company and your business interests and then offered to lay some cards on the table about another opportunity that you might be interested in.

It is early winter in the northern hemisphere. It is early summer in the southern hemisphere. Major markets like Brulantfort and Purvaux are looking for summer items like Towels and swimsuits and summer clothing. We have 50 tonnes of summer items ready to be shipped out to wholesalers to supply retailers in Brulatfort and Purvaux. The way to get these supplies to the potential markets is to transport them via truck to Brulantfort and then use the sea transport to Purvaux. “Since you are from the Brulantfort area, you are already aware that Truck Drivers will not travel through the war-zone to Brulatfort.” Sam shrugged. “Ordinarily, we would just reroute the order to Ville d’Esploir or Montsoliel, but it is winter there.”

She is offering the group the full lot [50 tonnes] at Cr 2600 per tonne [Cr 3000/tonne FMV] that you can transport to Brulatfort [+0 mod] or Purvaux [+3 mod] or store until spring and sell in Montsoliel [+4 mod].

Sam’s Offer: 50 tonnes of Summer Textiles [Cr 150k FMV] at purchase price = Cr 130k

"Unless someone is seeing something that I am not, I think that Montsoliel is about 10 thousand km (where we just drove 1000 km in 16 hours) and Purvaux without using the sea route is over 20 thousand km. Neither of these options sound particularly good. So unless I am missing something I would vote we pass on this kind offer."

"I love the offer and being open about you condition. I have no way to transport the items, and I am not sure if it would be worth hiring a ship to fly it there, also our truck has a limited capacity and we want to talk about the original offer before we decide on any other offers. "

GM: Hiring a ship is not worth the 3K base price, unless I miss my guess. Also Tut does not have alot of background in this type of trading.

[Just a bit on the economics of the TRADE with Montsoliel. Yeah, Cr 3000 per tonne makes profit margins tight on Textiles, just as a rule. There are some things to consider.
1. Government Subsidized Freight (your tax dollars at work) are a flat Cr 10 per tonne from point of origin to point of destination. The issue with Montsiliel, is they will not want Summer Goods in the Winter, so you will need to store them until spring (in the north Hemisphere). That is the problem that Decuir has right now and why you can get a 30% discount.
2. You have a Grav Transport that moves 4 tonnes at a time at a cost of Cr 28 per hour (about Cr 105 per tonne to transport from Decuir to Montsoliel). This creates both a problem and an opportunity. 50 tonnes is 13 trips x 4 tonnes per trip (15 hours each way). If you return EMPTY, that doubles the cost per tonne (the problem). On the other hand, Montsoliel is (NA,Ri) and Decuir is (NI), so there will likely be goods available at Montsoliel that are in demand in Decuir, just as Textiles are in high demand in Montsoliel. So there may be trade opportunities to fill the hold and create a profit on the way back. The issue is that 30 hours round trip x 13 trips means this is a project that would take WEEKS.
3. The Grav Transport Flight from Decuir to Purvaux is 21 hours to transport 4 tonnes at Cr 147 per tonne [same issues with needing a cargo for the flight back].

It is certainly OK to pass on the offer, but whether there is money in it is a complex question.]

Y2156.12.11:1300 Decuir (scene 4: Decuir Textile Mill - Emile Levesque)
The group departed the Decuir Textile Mill to “think about” Sam’s offer and return at 1300 to meet with Emile.

The group had a quiet lunch and returned a little early. Emile Levesque was a young man in a suit that seemed more “stressed” than anything else. He greeted you with a friendly shake and began discussing your interest in the 10 tonnes of Luxury Textiles originally scheduled for sale to Brulantfort for Cr 30,000 [FMV] before the shipment was delayed and the order cancelled, but not before it was manufactured. Emile was blunt that the order was yours for Cr 22,500 … just to clear the inventory from his books for the end-of-year audit.
Reaction Roll = 8 = friendly

Given the bureaucracy, it will be almost impossible to get paperwork to land a Starship anywhere except the Highport or Downport.
However, there are probably larger and faster Grav Transports available (commercial) than what you purchased for the company.
Let me calculate what it would cost to rent one of those and give you some options.

A Grav STOL-120 looks like what we need. We rent one, fly it here and load 60 tons, then Purvaux for sale, then maybe buy something if available. Is that something that sounds doable GM?

Y2156.12.11:1700 Decuir (scene 5: Decuir Landing Pad)
It was late afternoon and the sun was low in the cloudy sky. Fortunately the rain had stopped. Hol, Tut and Guy stood on the roof of the Industrial Cube watching the broad, shallow river flow across the land from the lake to the sea. A beep on your COMM alerted you to the approach of the STOL that set down on a straight section of road a short distance from Decuir.

Your truck splashed through the water until it reached the higher elevation where the STOL-120 waited. The Pilot had a few forms for you to sign … primarily acknowledging receipt of the craft … then he unloaded a small Micro-Transport similar to the one Mick owned from the cargo area for his transportation back to work. The craft had seating for 4 (2 pilots and 2 passengers) and a cavernous hold that could accommodate over 76 tonnes of cargo. The 600 kph Cruise Speed placed Purvaux (9500 km) about 16 hours away.

[So what exactly were your plans? What were you buying, loading and where were you taking it? ... all 60 tonnes to Purvaux?]
Roll = 7+(9/3) = 10 ... available for rent or rent to own.

The pilot responded to Tut’s question “Official Regulations require me to advise you that TWO pilots each certified in either “PILOT-1” or “VEHICLE (GRAV)-1” are recommended for operations greater than 8 hours, or ONE certified pilot for less than 8 hours. I am also required to inform you that a minimum of PILOT-0 or VEHICLE (GRAV)-0 is required by code to operate this craft.” he smiled “Now that the ‘official’ notifications have been made … this thing is a dream. The Low Autonomy AI (skill-2, INT 4) may not be up to handling an emergency landing with combat damage, but it is better at flying from Point A to Point Be from takeoff to landing than many commercial pilots. So when you are through, just fill the tank and give us a COMM and we will send a recall command to the AI, then that beautiful piece of machinery will just fly itself back home to the nearest holding pad where maintenance bots will clean it and turn it around for the next user. It could deliver itself except a person needs to be present for the transfer signatures.”

Once the Decuir Textile Mill had your signature on the order and payment transfer, the group was shocked how quickly the STOL was loaded. The Mill was as excited to be shipping again as you were to be moving this cargo out.

Hol and Tut were just a little disappointed behind the controls … as Pilots, telling the AI where you wanted to go and watching as it flawlessly executed a takeoff was not really a Pilot’s dream. However the system seemed more than competent to the task and you were free until 0930 tomorrow (Y2156.12.12) when you would touch down just outside Purvaux.

Old habits die hard, so you relaxed and slept in shifts so someone could babysit the AI.
