Lika

Lika hangs back at the first intersection, scanning both paths. He takes some time to examine the floating candle, checking for heat or wax droppings. "Interesting. Superfluous use of magic suggests someone or someones of decent power reside nearby. Be wary of traps."

Just clarifying: I thought we agreed on the small tunnel, not the doors? That's where Unari and Gruuthuk said, and I concurred?

Nella keeps her bow in-hand, the coin still fastened to her bodice. She carefully examines the hallway for traps, secrets, and surprises following as closely behind the scouts as they allow.

I saw a mixture of responses, but my overall impression was that the tunnel was to be avoided?
dmw71 wrote: Sat Jul 17, 2021 1:00 pmThe general consensus is to at least check beyond the set of double doors and avoid the more cramped tunnel.

I figured I would just have the group gather an initial impression of what is beyond the doors... without formally committing the group to that direction.

Feel free to clarify the direction the group elects to pursue and I will reflect in the next update.

Gruuthuk

The bugbear begins looking for footprints of anyone who may have gone through the door, ideally before his party members make tracks of their own.
On November 2nd I will be participating in another 24 hour game of Dungeons & Dragons as part of Extra Life. This organization uses gaming to help raise money to donate to children's hospitals. I'm raising money for Marshfield Children's Hospital in Marshfield, WI, and all money I raise will go to that hospital. All donations are tax-deductible. Tracks

One interesting observation that Gruuthuk makes while investigating the foot of the door, and the area immediately outside of it, is that the hallway itself is clean. Clean, in that it is conspicuously free of dust and debris.

Inside the current room, and in pretty much every other area explored thus far, there has been an expected amount of normal dirt and wear. Details that provide the faint hints of tracks in the first place.

This normal level of dirtiness is absent in the hallway beyond the doors.

---

I may very well have overlooked an action or detail from before the confusion over which direction the group was going to take.

Feel free to restate, as needed.

No map update.

After investigating the start of the hallway, the bugbear reports his findings to the others. Hallway clean. Everywhere else was dirty. Who sweeps dungeon?

"Someone for whom such magical expenditure is trivial," replies Baroness Nella, obviously her curiosity is piqued. "Such a being is likely intelligent enough to be reasoned with and well provisioned, but we have no assurance that it will go favorably. Our immediate need is to find water and rest. If this goes well, they may provide water, but would we trust them enough to rest there, or anywhere nearby, given the casual display of power? If we turn course and follow the goblins, we are more assured that we can secure ourselves after overpowering them and finding their water source."

She pauses only a moment, then adds, "I hope, however, that such a magician would be worth conversation, though, and know more about the art that these goblins are defacing... as well as avenues for later egress from this part of the dungeon."

Lika

"The meeting of civilized inhabitants intrigues me. That the kobolds aren't fouling the area could mean that they don't dare come here, or maybe an invisible servant is cleaning up after them. Perhaps the creator is long gone, and only remnants remain." He is much more pleased with their current area and glad to not be discussing the cramped tunnel.

"I would like to examine this area, but again, beware of traps."

Xanlanan offers his perspective, "'the road less traveled' a mentor of mine once said. What new interesting thing is there to find or learn from the well-worn path? Now, the question here, however, is which road is the one less travelled, eh? Is it this path that seems to have been carved out of solid stone or is it the door that has been here for as long as this dungeon has been created? Hmmm... I am interested to see where this small path winds to as well. It could be that it gets us past this formidable looking door anyway!"

Nella concurs with the scouts and adjusts her art easel to more easily fit in the smaller space. She puts away her bow and holds the lit coin and her sword in front of her as they explore forward to the next chamber...

Dead Goblin
The group elects to forego pursuing the clean, candlelit hallway and instead chooses to explore the rough tunnel, and the previously spotted dead goblin body.

With Unari leading the way, the group winds through the mined passage, which isn't quite as cramped as was feared.

While the tunnel walls, and floor, and ceiling surfaces are all well worn and roughly cut, and the width and height reflect this "freshly carved" appearance as they vary in size, but typically measure at least 5-feet in either direction.

The halfling scout wraps around the turn she previously just peered beyond and now is afforded a closer inspection of the area ahead.

Dead Goblin.jpg
Dead Goblin.jpg (27.73 KiB) Viewed 285 times

Three pickaxes and two shovels rest atop piles of rubble at the opposite mouth of the roughly 5-foot-wide by 5-foot-high tunnel that meanders through collapsed stone.

At the opposite end of the newly mined tunnel is a continuation -- or new/different branch -- of the normal, "dirty" tunnels that the group had previously been traversing.

Along the left side of this newly exposed hallway lies the body of a goblin... its skull caved in as its head appears to have been completely smashed by something blunt. Any blood from the injury is dried suggesting the creature met its fate some time ago.

This new hallway is L-shaped, with a branch exiting off to the right.
