Please add a -4 value to the 'Other Modifier' option on Nella's strength score
Done.

Gasping for breath, Baronness Nella falls to a knee and struggles from her backpack. "So... drained. My goodness. Gruuthuk, if you could be so kind, could you help me with this pack? Be mindful of the glass within."

She composes herself, exhaling a long breath and brushing her hands back to smooth her hair. "The first two mirrors each made a copy of our goblin friend, so we know more than one mirror can activate on an indvidual. Both of those mirrors are broken. None of the other mirrors then activated when he ran past them and he passed unharmed. So, either the mirrors all worked as a set, or only the first two were enchanted, or the latter mirrors don't offer threat but perhaps divination. We should be cautious, but have an indication that it may be safe to continue as well."

She stares down at the end of the hall. "I am sure greater threats remain behind such protection, and since the goblin was left to escape, they are assuredly warned of our coming. We have great risk in waiting and continuing." She nods to Unari and offers thanks for the healing. "Given we have no advantage of surprise, we might as well rest and proceed with better preparation. Let us retreat to the northern chamber, rest, and set guard on the hallway."

Gruuthuk

Picking up Nella's pack, the bugbear chimes in. If that shadow thing was that powerful coming from the goblin, I don't want to see what one can do if the mirrors make shadows of us. The way I see it, we have two options. Number one, we ignore them and never go this way again. We'd skip anything that might be down those stairs. Option B, we try destroying the mirrors. We could shoot arrows at them, or cast spells to try breaking them. Whatever we decide, we need to figure out how to get Nella' s strength back first. We can't fight anybody if she's weak as an unweaned whelp.

Lika

"Interesting. Do you suppose all the mirrors do the same? But why didn't more shadows appear? Is there a delay?" Lika shakes her head at the number of questions that have arisen.

He huddles with Xanlanan to discuss and notices Nella's state. "Baroness. You look, um...different. What happened? How did it feel when you were struck?" Lika listens to the conversations and interjects.

"Does anyone have any experience with such a malady? I could try dispelling the effect, but I have no personal experience of my own."

"It did appear that the goblins did not go down that corridor. I suspect that the fleeing goblin will either find unoccupied areas or be unwelcome, neither one would alert others to our presence."

"I feel... drained," the Baroness answers. "a single touch from it drained me of energy and sapped my strength. I am certain I could not survive a second such touch."

"Perhaps a good long rest and I may feel right as rain, but if you have magical rejuvenation it would not be amiss. I have my own skill with herbs and ungents and know this is beyond me."

Lika

"I see. Then let me try at least." Lika brings his arms together and makes an X in front of his face, chirping and chanting. She switches the forward hand three times, keeping the X formation, and then separates them in a flourish.

"Anything?" She inquires as she moves to place a hand on Nella's shoulder. "At the very least, this should take some of the pain away." Lika's hand glows slightly as he touches Nella.

Hall of Mirrors

Gasping for breath, Baronness Nella falls to a knee and struggles from her backpack. "So... drained. My goodness. Gruuthuk, if you could be so kind, could you help me with this pack? Be mindful of the glass within." The bugbear complies.

"Perhaps a good long rest and I may feel right as rain, but if you have magical rejuvenation it would not be amiss. I have my own skill with herbs and unguents and know this is beyond me." the monk continues.

Both Unari and Lika cast magical healings and the combination of their energies return the baroness to full health... but not full strength as Lika's clever idea of attempting to dispel the strength-draining effects fail to produce the hoped-for result. Still, Nella thanks the pair for their efforts.

The group begins to theorize on the mirrored hallway, and how -- or if -- to proceed down it.

"None of the other mirrors then activated when the goblin ran past them, and it passed unharmed," Nella notes despite her weakened condition. "So, either the mirrors all worked as a set, or only the first two were enchanted, or the latter mirrors don't offer threat but perhaps divination."

The bugbear offers his thoughts as well. "The way I see it, we have two options. Number one, we ignore this hall and never go this way again; or, two, we try destroying the mirrors before proceeding down it."

Regardless, the common agreement is that the group needs to rest before pursuing any additional course of action. Retreating to the previously explored and emptied room in the corner, with just a single entrance, is thought to be the safest location, and ultimately proves to be just that -- safe.

---

A few notes:
  1. Everyone recovers all lost hit points as a result of taking a successful Long Rest.
  2. However, per my 'Food and Water' house rule, any spent hit dice are only recovered if rations and water are consumed. Marullus, the hit die recovery only affects Nella, but:
  3. Hunger and thirst will be tracked for everyone, so please let me know if rations and/or water are consumed by your characters, and also whether it's a full or half ration/dose;
  4. Monsieur Rose, the lantern Lika has lit would have been extinguished overnight. Please deduct a flask of oil to keep it lit (or not; just let me know).
  5. The other light source, an illuminated coin, extinguished overnight as well. If this/these are meant to be relit, please have the appropriate character declare they're casing a Light spell, and also designate who will be carrying the coin, if different.
  6. Everyone, please confirm all your "stuff" in the footer section has been updated to reflect the long rest. Let me know if I missed anything.

Please respond to the above notes, plus indicate any other measures or decisions made before we set out again.

Gruuthuk

During his watch shift, Gruuthuk will consume a day's worth of food and water. He'll make sure his blades are sharp and his bowstring is not frayed. Beyond that, he'll sleep the best he is able when it is not his shift.
Everything looks good, Dave.

Nella thanks Gruthuuk for his assistance in hauling her gear. She sets up her easel and gets out her case of charcoals and pastels, unrolling her sheets of vellum, carefully extracting a full bottle from the rack built inside her travel case. She unfolds a camp stool and tucks her dress beneath her as she sits and contemplates.

Having shared a toast and then drunk a bottle previously, Baroness Nella continues her libations by drinking a second bottle as she sits at her easel and sketches the chambers they've seen so far. Her easel has a folding perch for her small metal wine glass - drinking from the bottle too gauche for the moment. Her large sheets begin to fill - The statue, the hallway of mirrors, the interrupted ritual of the goblins, a representation of the chambers so far... with a little more time to complete her work she is pleased with her results. Upending the bottle, she decides to include sketches of her companions as well, preserving them for history and adding suitably complimentary notes of there deeds in the marginalia of each drawing.

CON Save [1d20+1]=16+1=17
(Two bottles of wine today should be a half-gallon of water, with a passed save counts as hydrated? If so, eat a ration and rest. If not, also drink one waterskin for full hydration and then rest.)

Still remarkably weak, Nella has a quiet repast of her dried fruit and nuts and settles into her fine bedroll's silk inner lining, embroidered with the crest of her house. "You have all expended so much for me, with my gratitude, let me hope this rest leaves me hale once more."
I wouldn't expect to need the full food/hydration long rest for the sake of one spent hit die, but I'm doing it and recovering that hit die hoping the STR drain ends, too.

Light: the lantern was mine and I have 10 oil, spending that first flask leaves 9. As Nella will be asleep, I'll save those flasks for after the rest, letting the many Darkvision characters keeping watch handle the solution. :) When we awake, she'll request the Light spell on the coin be renewed, as that was remarkably handy, and will refill the lantern for Lika.

The footer notes:
Rations: 10 | Water: 2 |
I recommend we track that as:
Rations: 9 | Water: 2 (2) | Wine: 4 (6) | Oil: 9 |
...with each bottle of wine counting as half a waterskin by volume. She started with six bottles, drank two (now held as empties) and has four remaining. She also ate a ration, subtracted an oil, and regained her missing Hit Die.

How are you handling awarding inspiration?

Lika

Lika nods her approval of the lantern situation. "I will also cast light upon a coin and keep it in my pouch if needed."

He eats a day's ration and drinks a gallon. Marked off. "So. We need water. Maybe we track the goblins to the south. They must have a source somewhere. I do want to explore that mirrored hall, but I think we must focus on survival first. I for one did not expect to run into so much resistance so quickly. It prevented an adequate exploration."

Anything for Xanlanan?

Then, also, to confirm that the plan is to "...track the goblins to the south..." once the long rest is completed?

"Indeed," Nella concurs with Lika. "We have already given up surprise with the goblin fleeing ahead of us, and by taking time to rest, we are allowing any threat in the mirrors to potentially recover and reset itself. There's no advantage to rushing to the mirrors, especially as we leave these remaining goblins at our rear."

Concur on south.

Xanlanan kneels at his pack and rummages through it. He pauses then rummages through it again with various objects spilling unceremoniously around him. He seem to be getting agitated. He sighs. "I've just come to realize that I may have prioritized my packing and, I'll admit, my excitement may have gotten the better of me. I'm sure there will be fresh water somewhere close by, yes?" He looks down and keeps his eyes down as he opens up his packets of food while sipping slowly on his remaining skin. Quick embarrassed glances up at his comrades can be seen from time to time.

Hall
Nella wakes from her long rest and feels relieved to discover she no longer suffers from the limiting exhaustion she felt.

Final preparations are made, including illuminating any light sources -- a lantern and coin -- before the group sets out again.

The plan is to bypass the mirrored hallway and continue south in the hopes of uncovering the goblin's water supply.

South.jpg
South.jpg (38.7 KiB) Viewed 487 times

Aside from the two known side passages, the only unexplored area to the south is the door in the left wall at the end of the hallway.

---

Just to clarify, regarding:

"Two bottles of wine today should be a half-gallon of water, with a passed save counts as hydrated?"

Wine will not be considered a water replacement. Technically, alcohol dehydrates a person so even though water is a primary ingredient, and can probably be used to avoid a hydrate or die situation, it can't be used to combat exhaustion. In the same breath, I'm not planning on incorporating rules for drunkenness.
