Ensign Chowdhury

Chowdhury nods. He's not sure about the "splitting up" part of the Doctor's proposal but, with a little over an hour-and-a-half left on his chronometer, he agrees the sooner they find Room J the better. Chowdhury figures Room I is clear and so he determinedly heads across the hall to Room K. He readies himself, adjusts his grip on his phaser and opens the door.

Without glancing up from the computer terminal, Nadix says softly, "Respectfully doctor, we must remain calm and clear headed. If we cannot govern our emotions, it will be our undoing."

Sorry. Couldn't resist. :)

Coxa II: Inside the Slaver Outpost
Stardate 2271.3.24: 1853h

Countdown on Chowdhury's chronometer: 87 minutes

Image

The party moves into the room to investigate briefly, several of them urging that they move on.

Nadix triambles over to the central computer, and the ring of light above it flashes white for a moment. Chowdhury, ever diligent, tries to warn the Edosian, but it's too late. "Wait, commander! It's—"

Image

Nadix walks into a hidden disruptor field that surrounds the desk, blasting him backwards (-2 CT)! His life support belt crackles and short circuits, forcing him to remove it from his waist. He does not need it—the recent lowering of radiation around the planet make the device redundant—but he will sorely miss the small protection it would have given against traditional energy attacks.

The ring of light in the ceiling indicates that the disruptor field is still intact. The computer console rests on the desk, silently teasing those who would try to approach it.

Image

In the hallway, Endilev guards the rear and listens at Room L. He hears a low electric hum through the door, but nothing else.

Chaudhury moves past him to Room K, taking but a brief moment to calm his nerves before stepping through the threshold. He is suddenly greeted by warm sunlight, enough to cover his eyes for a moment to adjust. The entire room has become overrun with wild flora of all kinds, reaching up through giant holes in the ceiling and out into the open air.

Against one wall a huge jungle tree groans under its own weight, towering high into the sky. The many vines that hang from it rustle in the wind, and then three bizarre forms burst out of the branches, swooping low toward Chaudhury with bared fangs and vine-feelers whipping madly! "Skraww! Skraww!"

Sonic Disruptor: [4d6] = 12
Nadix's Protection: [1d6] = 5
7 points of damage dealt to Nadix. His life support belt soaks up 5 damage, leaving 2 damage against his CT.

Commander Nadix Ar Eth, Science Officer:

"Thank you, doctor. Forgive me. I acted in haste."

If he hears the dragonvines attacking, Nadix will say, "Please excuse me, doctor," and follow the sound, phaser drawn.
If he doesn't hear the attack, and the Slaver belt near the table is outside the violet energy field, then Nadix will carefully employ a pole or other found object to ensnare it.

Commander Gareb Endilev

”I'm starting to think red is an unlucky color,” Endilev says to himself, as he moves to investigate what's going on with the Ensign. Preparing for trouble he ensures the plasma pistol is at the ready!
This is a game about killing things and taking their stuff so you can become more powerful in order to kill bigger things and take even better stuff.

mjulius: That's how I know I'm home.

Ensign Chowdhury

Seeing the bizarre forms swooping towards him, Chowdhury has no hesitation in opting for self-preservation. He immediately throws himself back through the doorway while firing his phaser wildly behind him. He doesn't bother to aim, figuring that if anything gets close it will likely intersect the beam. His efforts are entirely focused on diving back through the door and closing it behind him.

Coxa II: Inside the Slaver Outpost
Stardate 2271.3.24: 1854h

Countdown on Chowdhury's chronometer: 86 minutes

Image

The screeches of the flying vine beasts echo through the corridor, calling all to the aid of Ensign Chowdhury. "Skraww! Skraww!"

The doctor scans Nadix with his tricorder, determining that his vital signs are still functioning strongly. A quick application of his hypospray should bring back to optimal performance. They rush to the exit and watch through the door as Endilev and Chowdhury gawk at some unseen monstrosity in Room K!

Chowdhury turns to dive out of the room, but the plantlike dragons are too fast! Swooping low from the tree branches, they come crashing into him, attempting to entangle him in their treacherous vines and rend him with razor sharp teeth!

For a brief moment, as the end looks near for him, the ensign’s mind wanders back to those countless moments during his days at the academy, when his fellow students would complain about the bewildering natural luck that seemed to follow him around. That same tinglingly familiar sensation rises up the back of his neck now, as the adrenaline courses through his veins—his luck is running hot, he can feel it. He ducks, he dives, and miraculously dances his way through the sinewy tentacles of the vine dragons! Throwing his arm blindly behind him, he pulls the trigger on his phaser and sends a beam straight into one of the animals, dematerializing it instantly!

Endilev slides up behind him with his plasma pistol already charging, sending a massive blast through the doorway over the ensign’s head. The vine dragons swoop out of the way, allowing the ball of hot destruction to soar between them, blowing a great heaping hole into the giant tree. Thousands of heavy leaves and vines rattle loose and fall from the sky as the tree begins to tip over, crashing mightily down on top of the building!

As the tree comes tumbling down, Chowdhury dives through the open doorway and slaps his palm against the access console, closing the door behind him.

Ensign Chowdhury

Chowdhury leans against the wall for a few seconds, trying to regain his composure after his very narrow escape from the room.

"Thanks Commander," he says to Endilev, appreciating the Commander coming swiftly to his aid. And then, in response to Ryerson, "I'm okay sir. It was just a close call. I'm not injured. Is Commander Nadix alright?"

After a few moments, Chowdhury glances at the timer again. There is a little over 80 minutes to go. If they don't get moving his narrow escape won't count for much. He gathers himself and moves to resume his security duties. He grips his phaser tightly to conceal the slight trembling that he feels in his arm, then moves to investigate room L.

Countdown on Chowdhury's chronometer: 83 minutes

A few minutes are expended as the party waits by the door, catching their breath and ensuring that the strange slithering dragons can't break through to continue their hunt. The dragons beat against the door several times, but it remains fast and they soon can heard swooping high above the building, shrieking their hunting cries out into the jungle.

Then, they move down the corridor and slide open the door to Room L. It is a strangely empty room, with floor, walls and ceiling all made of the same smooth, powder-blue substance. The only features that can be seen through the door are a series of small grey globes, each able to fit in the palm of the hand, set fairly high into the walls at three meter intervals—and a strange buzzing hum, soft but filling the room with its disturbing presence.

Directly across the room is a door whose marking you now recognize to be Room "J."

"Careful sirs," Chowdhury suggests, eyeing the small grey globes suspiciously from the threshold. "They could be some kind of defensive countermeasure." The ensign glances around, looking for something other than one of the officers that he might toss into the room to test his theory.

Nadix removes his destroyed life support belt and tosses it into the room as the others keep their weapons trained on the small hemispheres set into the wall. As soon as the belt strikes the floor…

The room erupts in a dazzling technicolor display of lights, all centering on the belt! The crew are forced to shield their eyes from the strobing colors, and when they are able to look back, the belt is gone, utterly disintegrated!

The lighting in the room returns to normal, and the strange mechanical hum disappears. For a moment all is silent, and then the hum slowly begins to build again, ever so softly.

Edit: the strobing lights seem at least in part to come from the glossy hemispheres. One combat round has past, and the sound is still slowly revving up, not yet at the volume or timbre of what you were originally hearing. You can wait it out to see if/how long it takes to return to normal, if you like.
