With a groan of iron, Ko-Nan and Malga pull the doors apart!

Beyond the sundered threshold is a bottomless pit.

Cold, dark, and forged of steel, it seemingly plunges down to Hell itself!

Maskelyn "helps" pull the doors open, then looks over the lip. He takes a few quick steps back when he sees the pit beyond the door. Watch that first step, Doc- it's a doozy!

Looking down, the big Mok wonders aloud "How we go down there???"

Carefully, Gossamer- very carefully...

LL shines the lantern down the shaft trying to judge the distance.

Ko-Nan stares into the black depths and is reminded of the deeper dark mines of his past. Not good memories. "Would there be another way down to the earing place?"

"Watch that first step, Doc- it's a doozy!" warns Maskelyn the trickster.

The bottomless shaft beyond the sundered door plummets down past the reach of Adrock's lantern, into darkness.

From the historian-priest's memory of the God's Eye map of the wondrous castle-ship...



...there might be 30 dungeon levels between here and the Earring of Engines. Steel poles and outcroppings jut from the walls of the pit. They could serve as handholds in an endless descent into the lowest bowels of the Castle Enterprise.

From the visions in the magic mirror, Adrock and Maskelyn know of no other path to reach their sacred goal, they report.

"Great! Just great!" says Fiefo the rat-man, happy to have something new to complain about.

Ko-Nan stares into the depths. "Stay alert! Those acid monsters could be anywhere - or something worse!" He secures his axe as best he can to free up both hands for the climb - having no rope or equipment left to aide them. If not further preparations are offered he begins the descent.

Wait a second, Mac! Let's check the closest rooms- maybe we can find something we can use for rope. Don't ships always have rope?
Maskelyn heads back to the door near Adrock, intending to search it.

Adrock chants an ancient hymn of 'Earth That Was.' Ko-Nan readies to plunge into the black abyss when suddenly, Maskelyn scurries away from the precipice!

A magical door opens at the gnome's approach and beyond is a room filled with glowing, pulsing jewels!



A strange, furry creature coos and purrs from behind glass.

Open cabinets beneath the tables reveal a colorful snarl of what might be rope!

Maskelyn smiles broadly, looking around at the wonders here. He immediately moves to the small, furry thing in its jar. Nice pelt- I could make a real warm hat outta that. He doesn't see any obvious way to get at the thing, so he moves on.
When he finds the ropes, he starts pulling them out of the cabinets so they can be untangled.

Hey, fellas! We got rope- I'll need some help untangling it.

Malga

Malga observes the strange room and the furry creature.

Frowning and eyes narrowing she says "It creature do nothing to you. You no kill,,, maybe it be pet?"

She moves towards the furry creature and observes it.

Ko-Nan looks at the tangle of colored rope than back to Maskelyn, "You untangle. I'll keep watch." Weapon in hand he stands vigilant at the door. Sometimes listening to warn of anything beyond it.

Yeah, Doc. Thanks.

LL looks at the small furry thing,


hmmm I think these were called guinea pigs in the ancient times.

he begins turning dials and pushing buttons tryign to open the cage

Under Malga's watchful gaze, Adrocks presses the glowing diadems of the ancients and frees the bizarre, purring creature!

Meanwhile, as Ko-Nan stands guard, Maskelyn harvests the strange, multi-colored rope.

It's alive? The wise woman back home only puts creatures in pickle jars when they're dead.

Working quickly, Maskelyn begins braiding and weaving to turn the thin strands into a usable rope.

With small, nimble hands, Maskelyn deftly conjures the thin strands into 75 feet of thick, heavy, rainbow-hued rope!

Watching, Adrock is reminded of certain ancient, inscrutable murals of the lost civilization of 'Earth That Was,' depicting their arcane, unfathomable and enigmatic pastimes.



The historian-priest pets the furry creature he has unleashed and feels a strange sense of calm and well-being pass over him.
