He could end up doing it real old-school and throw a spell-book into a locked room full of the 5 potential wizard characters. "Mkay boys, I'm going to turn out the lights and you can fight for whatever spells are in this here book.."
DM: "Black Dougal gasps 'Poison!' and falls to the floor. He looks dead."
Fredrik: "I'm grabbing his pack to carry treasure in."

I have recently come back to basic D&D through the OSR movement and it was like coming home after wandering in the wilderness for years.

I know exactly what you mean about the stats. The "roll to accomplish everything" standard set by newer games means that good stats and abilities are vital to accomplish anything. I remember looking at my first few LL characters stats and thinking they were rubbish and wouldn't last five minutes. But it's not until you play the game that you realise that the emphasis has shifted.

I was shocked by the differences and how much you can accomplish in a normal game session compared to 3.x onwards. Since going OSR I have bought the all the LL books, I play a BECMI campaign once a month and am now signing up to play Labyrinth Lord here.

I can't wait to get started :)

I'm pretty sure those stats qualify for a re-roll (sum modifiers of -1). You'll want to verify with the GM

That's OK. I'm embracing the old-school. :)
Though, I think the smart thing to do, in this case, it to ditch the battle axe for a hand-axe and a shield.

So... retainers. (Or retainER, since I've only got 50GP left).

How do I get one?

I can just roll up another 1st level character and assign him a class and then roll on the hiring reaction chart until he caves or leaves, I suppose. How many can I hire?

How should we handle this?

You start with two spells in your spell book.
  1. Read Magic
  2. Any 1st level spell of your choice
After that I use the Spell Learning Probability and Min/Max Spells per level.

That is correct. I applaud your willingness to "let the die land where it may" attitude but if you change your mind, it is ok with me. The point is to have fun.

As someone stated earlier, there may be enough players at this point that retainers are not needed. But if you really want one, it would be handled in-game. Pages 46 & 47 of the Labyrinth Lord core book indicate how the hiring is handled. As for level, the can be equal or lower level than you. CHA indicates the number of retainers you can have.

The fun of a 4 DEX!
:)
Enjoy guys!

This is a game about killing things and taking their stuff so you can become more powerful in order to kill bigger things and take even better stuff.
Alethan: I'm good with NOT pressing our luck this time.
mjulius: That's how I know I'm home.
Pulpatoon: The whole point of PbP is to take the scheduling pressure off the game. We're just chatty because we're so eager!
Scott308: ...everyone should be reminded of just how wonderful the people they play games with here can be in real life.
Leitz: Quality and quantity wise, I think US is the best I've seen.
Paladin: I can promise terror, glory, and riches...or a quick and brutal death.
Inferno: Come on! That's was Vicar's Head, a completely different doomed village!
Rex: I can move to the wait list to let someone else into the game.

I've been following this thread and I think it's great to play a PC with a low score. With a DEX of 4, maybe you could describe your character as 'missing a foot' or something similar (one leg is considerably shorter than the other, etc). Think of the savings in footwear!

Good luck and enjoy!

Heard about this on G+ and signed up to Unseen Servant just so I could play in this game!

Will take me a short while to get up to speed on the Unseen Servant way, but hopefully I'll be in with a shot of making the game.

Long time gamer, but I'm new to PbP. Are you still recruiting? Will you take a n00b?

Sure. All are welcome. The campaign ID# is 172. Go ahead and roll up a character using the house rules I included at the beginning of the thread. Currently, we have:
  • Drendan Fallowbriar, a halfling thief, DMStue
  • Pyrrhic Aere Perennius, a human fighter, RiotInferno
  • Mortiganto, a human fighter, Ludanto
  • Haldo, a half-elven ranger, Rollo
  • Uto Keitel, a human cleric, Saxinis
I have PM'ed the admin for our own forum. Once I have that info, I will go ahead and start setting everything up.

As always, please feel free to ask any questions you have.

Here's my work so far on character. Mechanical work is done, I'll give some thought to starting his story in the meantime.
