IG: In the Guild Hall
Re: IG: In the Guild Hall
Robin listened carefully and looked at his comrades. "I don't have 200 gold to my name right now. Can I pay in some kind of installment plan?"
Re: IG: In the Guild Hall
OOC: No, Robin has very little cash, that's true, but as a reminder there are some gems in the possession of this group. Robin was with them when they found them, in fact, IIRC, he actually found the box. You might want to do something productive with them I should think, but what do I know, I'm only the Referee.

"You sound like a procurator. Should I be worried?" Tinu smiles. "Still, I agree with you."

Robin laughed heartily. "My parents did try to make me into a scholar but my skull is too thick. I guess I could have been a procurator or litigator but that seemed to dry and dusty."
Re: IG: In the Guild Hall
OOC: I was waiting to see what you would do next, but it seems you are waiting for me. I'll make clear what you must do with the treasure you found...or face the consequences.
Guild Master Sikes says, "If you found treasure you should go see the Bailiff at the Tax Office beside Duke John's Keep immediately and pay your tax. The Bailiff will appraise your finds and take 10%. If there are items found and you need cash to pay the tax, things like gems or artifacts, the Bailiff will buy them and return nine tenths of his appraised value in coin."
"You didn't hear this from me, but Don the Bailiff will not give you a good deal on his appraisals. He is known to under value items, sell them for their true worth, and pocket a bit for himself out of the Duke's Tenth. He can't do that with coin, but he does when anything is brought in needs appraisal."
"Instead, for things that aren't coin, go see Chen Lakaster or the Vast Brothers up on Market Square. Their shops are just east of the Apothecary. Chen is a jeweler who buys and sells gems as well as makes various sorts of jewelry. He will give you a good price on those sort of items. The Vast Brothers run the Curio Shop next door to Chen and they are always interested in anything curious or magical." says Harold Sikes, "Once you convert the items you found into coin go to the Bailiff and pay the tax. Don will just take the Duke's tenth and you'll get to keep the real nine tenths."
"Don't forget to pay the tax or try to avoid it!" he warns, "This is truly life and death! For one thing you will be expelled from the Guild for even a minor transgression. For another you will get caught and end up with a hefty fine that you must either pay or have it taken out of your flesh, literally. The last poor soul who thought they could avoid the tax ended up a handless beggar."
"The Gate Guard should have sent you directly to the Bailiff at the Keep, but seeing as you came in with Mazie I guess he didn't." he frowns, "Go see to this now! It must be done the day you return to Slateholm or you will be in violation of the laws and the Guild rules."
OOC: Once you pay your tax and have a bunch of coin you can see to the next two important things for your party: Buying Robin's membership in the Guild and CAROUSING!
Carousing is how you gain XP and advance in Shadowdark! Plus, adventures and side quests can come from carousing events.

"Do we want to keep any of the gems, and pay the tax from selling the others?" Tinu asks the group as they divide up what to sell versus what to keep. "I still need to make the healing potions for us, and I need some items for that."Eris wrote: ↑Sat Mar 22, 2025 8:16 pmOOC: Once you pay your tax and have a bunch of coin you can see to the next two important things for your party: Buying Robin's membership in the Guild and CAROUSING!Carousing is how you gain XP and advance in Shadowdark! Re: IG: In the Guild Hall
Ferd sighs. "As it is always must be, I suppose," he says with a smile. "Only a brigand would do otherwise and we, of course, are upstanding adventurers of the Guild! We shall do nothing to tarnish our reputations, or yours," he assures. As he continues, he tries to soften up the guildmaster. "The poor lad, though... come to us impoverished! Does not the Duke offer the first year's membership? Let us extend that to him, shall we, and he will be an ever better guildsman in service to the Duke, no? I mean, who can fault the lad for heeding the Duke's call?"
Re: IG: In the Guild Hall
With those rolls, I'll say you convinced him to give Robin a discount and with a 10+ will convince Guildmaster Sikes to waive the 1st year's fee! Here goes...[1d20]=10 and looky there!Marullus wrote: ↑Tue Mar 25, 2025 1:12 am Ferd sighs. "As it is always must be, I suppose," he says with a smile. "We are always looking for good folk to join the Guild and expand our knowledge of the Duke's territory. I suppose I can offer young Robin here the same deal I offered to all of you." Sikes says rubbing his jaw, "If you vouch for him, I'll waive the first year's fee entirely and let him join on the say so of you three, but he is also your responsibility and if he fails in his duties as a Guild Member it'll be on *your* heads."

He pats the hobbit lad on the back. "I assure you, he's as honest as I am!"
Re: IG: In the Guild Hall
Ferd simply gives Tinu a look that is both shocked and wounded, placing a hand over his chest.
Re: IG: In the Guild Hall
Robin bowed first to the Guild master and then to each of his new friends in turn. "Thank you for your generosity and your trust in me. I swear on my parents graves and I will be faithful and true to all of you and the Guild. I am forever in your debt." He turned more directly to the others. "Gemstones are more portable wealth. We should probably keep the cut stones if we can and sell the rest to pay the tax and the cost to make potions."
Re: IG: In the Guild Hall
Having won concession from the Guildmaster for Robin and been admonished on the importance of taxes, Ferd encourages the others to scoot with him quickly out the door.
He will try to:
He will try to:
- get a fair price feom the jewelers (a roll?)
- Pay only what we have to for the Duke and keep the other gems dispursed among us as Robin suggested
- Get to Carousing! (Bonuses for you if you follow Ferd to the party!)
- If we roll lucky, level up?
- Go back to the gnome entrance

Re: IG: In the Guild Hall
Tinu, Ferd, Morvith and Robin leave the Guild Hall and start for the Market District. All of you, except Robin, have a rough idea of Slateholm's layout (see map), so you have a couple of options on your route to the shops and the tax office located there.
The quickest way would be west along Temple Road, but you could go north along Dock Street through the North Side District then turn north at Artisan Way to see more of the city on your walk to the jewelers, and there is clearly a tall tower...probably a wizard's tower...up that way that might tempt Morvith.
So, do you take Temple Road or Dock Street when you leave the Guild Hall? Whoever answers first picks the route you take.

Robin jumps in. "I would like to go down to the docks for at least a few minutes to have a closer look at the ocean before we take off."
