Long time Traveller looking for a crew and a ship

#1 Post by Niyaga »

Hi All, I'm looking for a group to collaborate on high adventure in space and keen to play although if enough were interested, I might run a Traveller RPG game using the Mongoose 2e ruleset.

With influences like The Expanse, Aliens, Firefly, Foundation and Star Wars, I like semi-plausible :D storylines, maybe gritty lifelike characters with an obligatory sense of humour (go easy there edgelord!) and collaborative cooperative groups (one can't crew a starship on their own!)

I'm male, from Australia, hobbies include sailing (my own ship is called Betelgeuse and my Engineer, Navigator, Purser and Pilot are family members. They're currently content with my Captaining and haven't mutinied yet...), renovating (is it over yet?), and gaming (video, board and tabletop).

Happy gaming, and hit me up if you're a fellow Traveller!

I think you'll have no problem starting up a new Traveller game here.

Good luck!!!

Welcome and well met!!
This is a game about killing things and taking their stuff so you can become more powerful in order to kill bigger things and take even better stuff.
Alethan: I'm good with NOT pressing our luck this time.
mjulius: That's how I know I'm home.
Pulpatoon: The whole point of PbP is to take the scheduling pressure off the game. We're just chatty because we're so eager!
Scott308: ...everyone should be reminded of just how wonderful the people they play games with here can be in real life.
Leitz: Quality and quantity wise, I think US is the best I've seen.
Paladin: I can promise terror, glory, and riches...or a quick and brutal death.
Inferno: Come on! That's was Vicar's Head, a completely different doomed village!
Rex: I can move to the wait list to let someone else into the game.

I did get a chuckle out of your .sig. :)

You probably already know this, but the pace of PbP is a lot different than face to face. The "norm", if we have such a thing, is about two DM "move things forward" posts a week, with many games slower, and some much faster. Often combat events will speed up the post rate, but not always.

It looks like you're already talking to BwT about his 1107 game. Be forewarned, he's a prolific setting builder! :) I like that, but he even overwhelms me sometimes.

You might want to check out the GM's of the Unseen Servant thread to see what sorts of information people look for. Some like dark and gritty, some don't. When you're ready, post in What would you like to play or run. Most active folks here will get a notification if you post there, and it'll get you the most "eyeballs on post".

Thanks!

I was running PbP for years until about 3 years ago when I moved and Got a Real Life Gaming Group! so I actually came here following a google search for a PbP Traveller game. I like the detail of PbP and the opportunity to think through scenarios and actions, and assess one's actions. I also like settings and I'm a prolific setting builder and understand there can be too much to follow sometimes, too much text and detail hidden in threads. PbP is an art form and simplicity can be difficult to achieve! I'm keen to get back into it.

I'm working through the site and will check out these threads as you suggest, thank you!

Yes! It’s nice when new folks understand that PbP is a different way to play. Sometimes folks will grumble about the pace (vs RL) but forget all the positives that go along with PbP

Again, welcome!

Welcome aboard Niyaga! There are several Traveller games running on Unseen Servant as we speak, as you can see if you scan down the list of games. Mine is currently full unless some way can be found to sneak a new crewman aboard. I'm going to leave that up to them to figure out if they want to. ;)

I have a "next game" percolating around in my brain that will be a hybrid of Traveller and Space 1889 (based loosely on Harry Turtledove's The Road Not Taken). Gravity manipulation and the "ether propeller" is discovered in the 1780's when Martians attempt to invade Earth and fail rather dramatically. Soon the British, French, Russians (eventually Americans) and various other states are exploring and colonizing the planets of the Solar System. By the late 19th century humans are using Jump Drive technology (invented by Faraday, Edison and/or Tesla) to colonize other systems where they meet...humans! Meanwhile back on Earth technology hasn't progressed nearly as fast with TL's of 3 or 4. The cultures they have met among the stars are similar (or lower). It seems once gravity manipulation is discovered nobody advances much more. The game would be a set in the 1920s with Earth tech mostly TL4 and would follow the crew of a ship owned by, oh maybe Cunard Starships Limited or White Star. This is one of two games/settings I've wanted to run for years and years. :)

Hey Eris, thanks for writing!

Sneak a crewman aboard? There's always room for another, right?

The next game sounds cool. Space Steampunk?

I'm fleshing out and developing my own Pirates of Drinax for my home group, and may post this on here at some stage, too. I'm a long time forever GM and really enjoy building games. Slowly, slowly though. Hoping to give each game enough attention.

Welcome!
On November 2nd I will be participating in another 24 hour game of Dungeons & Dragons as part of Extra Life. This organization uses gaming to help raise money to donate to children's hospitals. I'm raising money for Marshfield Children's Hospital in Marshfield, WI, and all money I raise will go to that hospital. All donations are tax-deductible. Please take a moment to check out my donation page below. Thank you.
