Greetings

#1 Post by mike808 »

Hi there,

The first RPG I ever played was Middle Earth Roleplaying (MERP) a long time ago, which quickly led to the Rolemaster rabbit hole (which I believe leads to the Abyss if you follow it all the way). I actually played the D&D red box second to that. But these two started a long appreciation for RPGs in my life. I've played in-person and solo but never PbP. I'm here because I moved to Hawaii and am kind of in a RPG wilderness with zero encounters . . . I love OSR, story games, and all else. I see the strengths and weaknesses of many different systems and approaches. And I try not to be too doctrinaire in my thinking.

Favorite RPGs (at the moment): Shadowdark, Dragonslayer, Ye Cyclopedia (and all BECMI-adjacent goodness), Advanced Fighting Fantasy (and not just for nostalgia reasons--I love the setting of Titan).
Games I want to play more: Symbaroum, Forbidden Lands, any WoD (though I've only played Vampire the Masquerade), anything Palladium, anything Savage Worlds, any edition of AD&D (but I've never played BrOSR style and have a hard time seeing how 1:1 time actually can work, session-to-session--Jeffro refused to explain it to me once, so I gave up trying to understand it / him / them).
Games that I have not played, but that intrigue me: Blade Runner (Free League version), FIST, Nightbane (Palladium), Castles & Crusades, Hyperboria, White Box Adventure Game, Cairn.

Basically, I love games. I'm a PbP novice, for sure. But I can get into any system / setting and want to try this out sometime. This seems like a good place for it.

Welcome Mike! Check out the Looking for players or games sub-forum to see what people are recruiting for, or looking to game in. There are usually a variety of things starting up.

Another option is to scan the Play by post campaigns sub-forum and see what's already being played. If something really really calls to you, send a PM to the DM to see if there's an open spot. Sometimes there are, sometimes not. Either way the DM knows your interest and may give you a shout when something does open up.

Nice list of games Mike! Welcome!!
Is that Bogie in a Star Trek shirt??

This is a game about killing things and taking their stuff so you can become more powerful in order to kill bigger things and take even better stuff.
Alethan: I'm good with NOT pressing our luck this time.
mjulius: That's how I know I'm home.
Pulpatoon: The whole point of PbP is to take the scheduling pressure off the game. We're just chatty because we're so eager!
Scott308: ...everyone should be reminded of just how wonderful the people they play games with here can be in real life.
Leitz: Quality and quantity wise, I think US is the best I've seen.
Paladin: I can promise terror, glory, and riches...or a quick and brutal death.
Inferno: Come on! That's was Vicar's Head, a completely different doomed village!
Rex: I can move to the wait list to let someone else into the game.

Thanks, all. Glad to be here. Yes that's Bogie, but he's not in a ST uniform (though he should be)!

Welcome! I too love old movies (I'm assuming you do with the Bogart avatar photo)! I know there are a few Hyperboria games going, take a look at those.
On November 2nd I will be participating in another 24 hour game of Dungeons & Dragons as part of Extra Life. This organization uses gaming to help raise money to donate to children's hospitals. I'm raising money for Marshfield Children's Hospital in Marshfield, WI, and all money I raise will go to that hospital. All donations are tax-deductible. Please take a moment to check out my donation page below. Thank you.

Good advice. This morning, I started lurking to get an idea of what's going on. As a PbP newbie, I think I need to educate myself on the methods here. Weirdly, I enjoy reading transcripts of games-in-progress a lot. :SAN:

If you like BECMI/Rules Cyclopedia, feel free to check out my Dark Dungeons X game. Recruitment Thread: viewtopic.php?t=13571. Game forum: viewforum.php?f=1552.

DDX is a retroclone of BECMI/Rules Cyclopedia with a few tweaks, including some rebalancing of the classes and a unified system for stat checks. I have two teams of two players each running there, and one of the teams (Luca + Troy) is in the main city at the moment wrapping up their first adventure, so it'd be pretty easy to work your character into that team.

Thank you. That looks very interesting! I think I'm still absorbing this site and considering the dimensions of play-by-post, but I will be seeking out games to join very soon.
