The 'f' just means it's flechette damage.
Yes, f is flechette.

And, D is DEADLY

The number in the damage code is the base TN for the person damaged to roll reduce the damage. So, a 3D starts with really high damage potential; however, it is really easy to reduce with armor and then Body tests. a 9M starts at a lower damage output, but it is much harder to reduce the damage. It is much easier to roll a 3 on one die than a 9.

The Ares Predator is a good all around weapon. The Remington Roomsweeper is a fairly concealable shotgun, good for household defense. The Savalette Guardian is often a sammie's choice due to its add ons.

The Range Table is on page 111 of the BBB.

The Damage Code explanation is on page 114 of the BBB.

The rules for staging and reducing damage are on 113-114 of the BBB.

If you're interested in the Ares Predator and have a smartlink then go for the Ares Predator II from Cannon Companion. It has a smartlink built in so you don't have to pay extra to have it fitted like the original Ares Predator. I can give specs:, damage 9M, 15 clip , conceal 4, weight 2.5, cost 550Y

The 'f' just means it's flechette damage.

I can't remember exactly why but a higher number is better for the chance to cause damage, but a higher damage level is also better because it's where the damage level starts before people roll to resist and armour comes into play.
Serious sounds nastier than Medium, so why is the Ares more expensive? Is it because of the bigger ammo clip? Or does "flechette" come with drawbacks (like armor better protects against it or something?)?

Edit: Nevermind, answers to my questions sneaked in before my post.

I will probably do that. Should probably get at least a smartlink when it comes to cyberware.

The talk of weapons brings up an interesting question: How lethal are we planning on being? There should be non-lethal weapon options (or maybe that's in later editions?) unless we're always planning on using lethal force. And I imagine having a reputation of always using lethal force might not be a good thing.

As a minimum a smartlink. But I would suggest cybereyes with vision enhancements: low light and/or thermographic, plus flare compensation. Buying cybereyes costs 0.2 essence but you can add extras (such as low light vision) up to another 0.5 essence without it costing that essence.

EDIT: flare compensation has too high an availability rating for us to buy.

That's a good point, we should be able to hit hard when we need to but ensure we have other options. I might buy a tazer, or I remember there being guns that fire sleeping darts, need to try and locate those.

I know it makes sense from a mechanics standpoint, but Baby Blue treasures her eyes. She ain't touching them. I'm gonna play around a bit and see if I can afford some plastic bone lacing. More body seems always good, and it would help keep her from being in quite so much trouble if she's up close and personal with someone. Nevermind. Bone lacing availability is too high.

What things do we need to make sure we have money for (the expenses subsystem is a lot deeper than I'm used to)?

Near as I can tell, we need at a bare minimum:
1. Lifestyle
2. Weapons
3. Armor

Is there anything else I need to make sure I have handled? Obviously, things like consumable medical gear wouldn't be a bad idea, but I want to make sure my character is wearing pants, so to speak, before I spring for "luxury" cybergear.

I think that's the basics. You might want to buy a phone.

If you don't want cyber-vision you can buy things like low-light goggles. Rereading the rules you can have vision enhancements made to your eyes without getting them replaced, but you pay for each essence hit separately.

I was actually considering getting a comm-link cyberware. Baby Blue silently listening in on various frequencies seems right up her "always quiet, always watching" vibe that she's developing. Though, it's not clear to me how much actual spying she can do with one.

For a street samurai, see if you can fit in any wired reflexes.

Waaaaaay too expensive. The cheapest is 55K. Something to keep an eye on after a few successful runs. :)

Yes, please keep in mind this section of the FAQ:

"Moreover, these PCs are those who have a reputation for restraint, for knowing when to use diplomacy and when to use force. These are not the types who go off halfcocked or who kill for sport. Or at least that's what their street reps say. If they are more violent or impulsive, they have somehow managed to conceal it from the fixers and Johnsons they have dealt with."

There is also the Ares Squirt. It squirts DMSO plus another chemical of your choice. The DMSO makes the stuff seep through armor and the skin.

There doesn't seem to be a skill listed for tasers, what skill would they use? Pistol? Or would they have their own?

Also: Ares Squirt is the most hilarious name I've ever heard for a weapon.

It looks like tazers have too high an availability rating for us to buy at the start.

However, we can buy gel rounds which do stun rather than physical damage.

Ok. I think I have my character's gear and contacts figured out. I'll post full details once we have a proper forum. I'll definitely be relying on rooming with Juramenta's character assuming he can afford it. Got a smartlink + Ares mark II gun, plus some cyberears with sound enhancement and dampeners, the vest with plates, plus some other miscellaneous gear, medkit and patches.

Contacts are her Dad (Edge contact, thinking someone who was high up in a corporate structure in Hong Kong, before mostly-retiring to Seattle. He's got lots of contacts, but his star has faded a bit, and he doesn't have the pull he once did), Deadbeat (Troll leader of her old street gang), and Neon, an old cellmate from prison whose working at a local bar. I figure she was the one who who hooked Baby Blue up with the gear and cyberware, payed for by some money dear old Dad gave Baby Blue when she got out of prison.

Edit: She's shaped up to be more of a look out style character. Someone who tries to keep an eye out for things, give some bullet-filled backup, but is probably less likely to be messing it up in the thick of things. Maybe if the game lasts long enough, I might try to build up her skill with rifles and get a rifle. Or some cyberware to make her a bit more frontline compatible, depending on how the game goes.

I think there is a hand taser that uses Armed Combat and a pistol one that uses Pistols.
