Growing impatient, Fiefo, fires off a few arrows at the slime creatures behind the fire on the other end now that a clear line of sight has opened.

Attack with Short Bow (THAC0 15): To Hit: [1d20+1]=4+1=5 Damage, s/M/L: [1d6]=2
Attack with Short Bow (THAC0 15): To Hit: [1d20+1]=2+1=3 Damage, s/M/L: [1d6]=3

His arrows clatter off the walls, one after the other, in a way that makes him question his chosen vocation in life. He glances around to see if anyone noticed, and is relieved to see they are busy getting choked out and are thereby distracted.

Cave near the Starfall, Island of Xygax the Wizard, Land of One Thousand Towers
Nightfall. Friday, April 13th, 912 CY

Image

Ko-Nan's stomach revolts at the sight of the lurching, slime-covered horrors.

But Connak's flashing sabre is a blur of silver and the sludge-creature at his throat is cleaved apart and splatters to the ground as its slime body loses all cohesion! Another disgusting mucus-corpse (S8) takes its place and pummels Connak with a gooey fist! (3hp damage, and please Save vs Poison)

Alongside the cat-man, Finver's war-hammer bludgeons a second foe (S7) and beats down its counterattack!

Fiefo and Mungo fire bow and sling through Maskelyn's duplicitous flames! Arrows splinter against rock walls but Mungo's bullet smashes its target again! (S1)

Draupadi's mystic hammer finishes the muck monster (S1), and bones and mire splash against the floor!

Seeing this, the groaning atrocity beside it (S2) lumbers through the fiery wall to attack! Its dripping hands reach toward Maskelyn and it is instantly consumed by imaginary flames!

Ko-Nan's follow up attack is muted by mucous and slime - splashed across his face from Connak's kill! He bellows in rage at his lack of death-dealing destruction.

Finver raises a victorious fist, then splays his fingers to comb his beard clean of the creature's muck. Inhaling a deep breath of freedom from its choking grasp, he rallies his party shouting "Drive 'em back, fellas! Forward is tha only way we survive!"

Finver attacks in melee with two handed war hammer [1d20+2]=12+2=14 doing [1d6+2]=4+2=6 of bludgeoning damage

Mungo
By Wells and Verne, that mindless creature.... He searches for the right word. Mindlessly walked into an illusory flame. He focuses on pegging the next gel thing with a bullet, holds his tongue tongue against is upper lip, and let's fly.

Cave near the Starfall, Island of Xygax the Wizard, Land of One Thousand Towers
Nightfall. Friday, April 13th, 912 CY

Image

Thick, slurping shrieks emanate from the slime-zombie devoured alive by Maskelyn's phantom flames! (S2) And then it makes no sound ever again.

Fiefo and Mungo loose another volley through the false fire and the ratman's arrow sinks deep into the viridian slop of a nigh-human torso. (S3) Mungo's bullet misses the mark as Draupadi's spectral hammer bludgeons another ooze-corpse! (S4)

Unwilling to advance through the flames, the two dripping, groaning horrors (S3, S4) lurch southwards into darkness!

On the northern front, as Ko-Nan's primal revulsion still plagues his aim, Connak and Finver wield sword and hammer in brutal arcs of devastation! Two more ghoulish living cadavers are dismembered in a ghastly spray of slime and bone, and suddenly the battle is over!

Ko-nan grudgingly nods acknowledgement to the prowess of those slowly becoming part of his clan. When the light is available he will delve deeper into the cave.

Fiefo moves southwards until he is standing next to the slime monster that "burned." He gazes at it thoughtfully for a moment before looking up at Maskelyn.

"Wow," he says. "So did he... did the fire, like... hmmmm.... You know what? I don't need to know. Let's press on, I guess. You think those people are still here? Someone needs to tell them they have a slime man problem."

Finver cleans his beard and harnesses his war hammer. He sighs in relief observing the carnage before them. He tries to infuse some humor, playfully commenting, "Well, my friends, it's so nice ta feel like I'm back home again. I just wish tha welcoming party would shake yer hand rather than yer neck when ya come in. Ya just rest up here a few moments, and I'll move on ahead ta take a look further inside."

Finver lights a torch and moves cautiously to explore the tunnel ahead.

He'll use his senses to detect any threats, traps, unusual items but remain within 60' of the party at all times. Can we progress at 60' increments using this pattern?
  • Detect grade or slope in passage, upwards or downwards = 75% probability (d4, score 1-3)
  • Detect new construction or passage/tunnel = 75% probability
  • Detect sliding or shifting walls or rooms = 66 2/3% probability (d6, score 1-4)
  • Detect traps involving pits, falling blocks and
    other stonework = 50% probability (d4, score 1-2 or d6, score 1-3)
  • Determine approximate depth underground = 50% probability

Mungo says, That was some fine fighting, guys. And that illusory fire really did the trick. He packs his sling and pouch of bullets away. He's rather satisfied with his performance. "Two out of four hits," he thinks. "Not bad for a 70 year old nearsighted moleman cleric." He follows Finver and Ko-nan further along the cave.

Connak follows along with the others, having traded his saber for bow and arrows again. assuming that the four arrows lay broken from the walls, so -4 arrows. In response to Draupadi's query, he speaks up I've taken a few hits. After a moment he asks Maskelyn How long will those flames last?
