Zahra
Zahra takes 1 step back, only to allow Iago freedom of movement. She growls, not seeing any way to assist him on the narrow bridge.

Beneath the Forbidden City of the Dead, Pictland, the World of Hyboria
Day Nine. Morning. 19th day of the month of Qrot, 1280th year of the Age of Aquilonia

Image

"Blood and souls for my lord Thanatos!" roars a fanatical warrior in a long-dead tongue! Wise Amethu has heard of the Atlantean god of death. In ancient times, he had no temples and his name was spoken only to pray that he never came.

It is as the murals foretold. After the fall of Atlantis, Thracia had descended into death worship and madness.

On the battle's northern front, Grigor fires a dead Pict's arrows into the phalanx of Thracian warriors, and impales a forearm clean through!

Then the gypsy falls back with Gnasher following as Cruloc lunges forward and hurls a flaming bottle of oil into the shield formation! The glass flask explodes on impact and engulfs the center man in a conflagration that roasts him alive! (T1)

Image

The burning Thracian does not scream. Nor do his countrymen flinch. Without hesitation, they launch missiles at Cruloc and one spearhead impales his hip and blasts out his back in a ghastly eruption of blood and gore! (5hp damage!)

Little Dahinna summons her nerve and dashes out over the bottomless pit to aid Grigor and Cruloc as their torchbearer! Amethu follows, maneuvering into range of his fearsome magicks!

To the east, Iago's dagger thrust is halted by a great shield in a spray of sparks! (T4) But the pirate slips his saber past his foe's defenses and pierces his sword-arm, ruining his aim!

Kiri the giant wrests his trident free from a Thracian's ribcage (T5) and sinks it deep into his thigh! The man's leg gives way and he tumbles over the rope railing down into the hungry chasm below!

Another swordsman springs forth to take his place, eyes blazing murderously! (T7) With a thunderous crash, the warrior dents Kiri's helmet with a savage blow that would have split his skull to the jaw! (9hp damage!)

Grigor

With the centre man ablaze, he shouts to Cruloc, "You attack the one in the left, I will focus on the warrior on the right."

He hopes the splitting of opponents means he can safely loose another volley of arrows into his target (T6).

Dahinna

Choking back the bile that has risen in her throat from the smell of burning flesh, Dahinna holds the torch high while looking across the chasm and praying to Mitra to keep Iago and Zahra safe.

Iago Vazquez de Quesada

"You're all so chatty,"
Iago grumbles in respone to their war-cry. "Though I might be, too, if I lived in the dark with only warlike savages for company. Do you talk to all your victims before you murder them for no reason? If you had the good sense to learn common, we could talk this over like civilized people." He hesitates and grins over his shoulder. "Well...except for Cruloc."

Amidst the one-sided conversation, Iago rains blows upon his opponent in an attempt to find a weakness and strike flesh.

Cruloc

The mute, fiery death of the Thracian briefly unnerves the Cimmerian. Nevertheless, watchful for tripwires at the threshold and the possibility of unseen enemies to his right and left, Cruloc advances menacingly, bloody murder his sole strategy. And in moments, the sound of steel on steel, the grunts of fighting men, and the smell of quick-loosed blood fill the air!

"Have at you, hog spoor!"

Attack w/ longsword [1d20+2]=20+2=22
Longsword vs. S/M opponent [1d8+3]=2+3=5

T2 is his intended victim.

Zahra
Zahra squirms, frustrated by her inability to join the battle.

IF she can do so without endangering Iago, she'll add a thrust from her javelin to his attack, reaching around him.

Amethu quickly scans both fronts of the attack. He sees one group getting further split apart and acts. He pulls a bit of iron from his robes and hurls at the group to the east and utters a command from beneath his mask!

Beneath the Forbidden City of the Dead, Pictland, the World of Hyboria
Day Nine. Morning. 19th day of the month of Qrot, 1280th year of the Age of Aquilonia

Image

Fire, blood, steel and murder.

The homicidal Thracians in the northern tunnel reach out to guardpost armories beyond view to rearm themselves anew! Then they hurl spears without mercy at Cruloc! One pierces his abdomen (3hp damage), joining the spear that adorns his hip!

Cruloc pries the shafts from his body and advances! As his foemen growl in an extinct language, the barbarian suddenly finds Thracian spearmen surrounding him, waiting in ambush! (T9, T10) Cruloc lurches back, narrowly evading their thrusting spears!

He retreats past Grigor who sinks another dead-eyed arrow to the feathers into a warrior's chest (T6)! The gypsy priest tries to step back but in the killing corridor there's little room to maneuver!

Dahinna holds the torch aloft and her breakfast down, struggling against the savory smell of roasting human flesh.

On the eastern spur of the rope bridge, a bloodthirsty Thracian sheathes his sword in Iago's gut! (4hp damage)

There is blur of steel as Iago whirls his sabre and a trail of crimson blossoms across his enemy's chest! (T4)

Image

Zahra angles to join the fray, to no avail!

Kiri prepares to smite his third adversary! (T7) Fury makes a hellish mask of the death-worshipper's face and then all life goes out of it!

Unbeknownst to Kiri, Amethu has cunningly beguiled two Thracians with sorceries frightful, ancient and unnatural! (T7, T8) He dominates their fiery will and they stand entranced with shields and swords lowered!

Kiri's thrust already launched, his blood-soaked trident savages the suddenly ensorcelled man but does not kill him!

Actions?!

Map Detail:

One square = 10 feet. Lighter areas are visible, all else is from memory.

Behind the DM Screen:
Initiative: Party: [1d6]=3, Monsters: [1d6]=4 Monsters win.
T2, T6 fire spears at Cruloc: [1d20]=4, [1d20]=20, damage: [1d6]=4, [1d6]=3 One spear hits for 3hp.

If Party had won Initiative, then T9 and T10 couldn't have attacked Cruloc before he pulled back. But Party lost initiative. T2 and T6 warn T9 and T10 that Cruloc is coming. Cruloc is very wary of this ambush, so no chance of surprise, no flank attack bonus, and he gets full AC.
T9, T10 attack Cruloc with spears: [1d20]=2, [1d20]=11, damage: [1d6]=6, [1d6]=5 Both miss!
T4 attacks Iago: [1d20]=15, damage: [1d8+1]=3+1=4 Hits for 4hp.
T7 attacks Kiri: [1d20]=5, damage: [1d8+1]=8+1=9 Misses.
T4, T7, T8: Save vs Spells: [1d20]=17, [1d20]=9, [1d20]=9 T4 saves.
So Kiri automatically hits T7. Kiri: damage to T7: [1d6+8]=2+8=10

The Zingaran's smile fades and, for once, he has nothing to say. Iago grits his teeth and jams both blades directly at his adversary's chest.

Amethu calls to Kiri to alert him of his sorcerous boon, "You have but a few minutes of advantage! End this quickly!" He turns to face north once again with little left to aide the front lines.

Cruloc

The barbarian moves in front of Grigor, but not enough to allow attacks from multiple enemies. He extracts the spear tip from his flesh, and launches it at any Thracian presenting himself as a target at the archway.

"Perhaps a spear in the gut will make you scream!"

Day Nine. Morning. 19th day of the month of Qrot, 1280th year of the Age of Aquilonia

Image

"Blood and souls for my lord, Thanatos!"

Over the shouting of murderous oaths, in languages dead and living, roars a clamor of hacking blades to rival any butcher's shop.

Backlit by Dahinna's torch, Grigor evades another volley of spears and fires his horseman's bow, shattering two Pict-arrows against the stone ceiling!

Then the gypsy flattens himself and his hound against one wall as Cruloc lunges past and hurls a bloodied Thracian spear, late of his own gut, with all his might! The missile impales its former owner! (T6)

The ghastly wound staggers him but he does not cry out.

On the eastern front, Kiri slaughters a Thracian stricken by Amethu's insidious sorceries! (T7) Deeper in the tunnel stands another victim entranced! (T8)

Nearby, with Zahra seething behind him, Iago parries Thracian steel and ripostes his sabre to the hilt into his foeman (T4), running him through and killing him instantly!
