Ha moves to put the fire behind him, to give him the best chance to see whatever is out there. If he can get far enough to see the bakemono, he will fire an armor piercer at them, if possible.

Sorry, there was an error on Toshizo's sheet. His BAP should be 9 (partially encumbered DFT 18.87 / 2), rather than 5. No secondary AP, it's lost because of the encumbrance. (Actually I need to check and confirm that).
Toshizo's adjusted BCS 11 kyujutsu roll of 9 didn't hit? I guess because of the bakemono-sho's AC.

If Eiji catches up to a Bakemono he will whop it with his spade trying to make it drop the corpse.

Souta:
Souta is going to hold her second action.

Taka:
Taka is going to emerge from the building after hearing the stray's growls and the recognizable sound of the bowstrings loosing arrows. She sees the light of the fire and the two bushi with their bows drawn. The darkness outside is hiding what is going on to her. What is going on out here?, she says quietly as she steps out of the building to join Souta and Toshizo at the corner of the building and out of the firelight, where her eyes will begin to adjust.

This is correct. I think Souta has the newest version of the Bushi sheet if you want to transfer to that template. The "encumbrance" toggle at the top figures all that automatically. :)
- Manually: When partially encumbered, his Deftness is 25 *.75 = 18 which gives a BAP of 9. His speed is 20 *.75 = 15, which is the minimum needed for a second action (1.5 rounds up to 2). So, you have a basic/primary action on 9 and a secondary action on 4. If unarmored, he acts on 12 and 6.
- He still suffers the -1 BCS to all rolls for encumbrance.
He missed because of both AC and cover (for being in a hole). It's listed out in the spoiler of the post.

Ha is unencumbered and takes 1 action on phase 5, but has amazing Strength and Health.
I updated the turn order below.

Turn Order:
Phase 16: Jīva (Basic Action)
Phase 12: Bakemono-sho (Basic Action)
Phase 10: Souta (Basic Action)
Phase 9: Toshizo (Basic Action)
Phase 6: Eiji (Basic Action); Souta (Secondary Action)
Phase 5: Ha (Basic Action)
Phase 4: Toshizo (Secondary Action)
Phase 3: Souta (Secondary Action)
Phase 2: Taka (Basic Action)
(Round 1, Phase 5)
Ha emerges from the building and moves to put the fire behind him, to give him the best chance to see whatever is out there. He draws his bow and an armor piercing arrow.
I am allowing Ha and Taka to begin movement at the door rather than inside the building. Ha then has a base movement of three yards (with 1 yard hexes) so I placed him three outside the door with the fire behind him. He now begins from the position that he's at on the map.
Technically, it takes a Secondary Action, Draw Weapon, to ready his bow. This would mean he has to choose moving his three yards OR getting the bow out. For this scene, I'm allowing him to dready his weapon for free.
(Round 1, Phase 4)
Toshizo has a secondary action, but as noted, this is not very helpful to archers.
(Round 1, Phase 3)
Souta said she's holding her secondary action.

(Round 1, Phase 2)

Taka emerges from the building after hearing the stray's growls and the recognizable sound of the bowstrings loosing arrows.
Taka has a movement of 2 yards. I am also allowing her to begin at the door, so I placed her on the map two yards out. Her movement from here is map-based, with one-yard squares. If she rolls Observe Situation instead of moving, she has BCS 11, which is best in the group. You need to specify what object or direction she's looking at.
(Round 2, Phase 16)
Jīva gives a warning growl low in his throat, hackles raising as he stays at Eiji's side, eyes fixed on the bakemono-sho ahead of them.
Jīva is holding his action. He'll attack to defend Eiji.
(Round 2, Phase 12)
With the rear-most of them squealing as he is stuck with an arrow, the three bakemono-sho redouble their efforts, trying to hurry north still dragging their ill-gotten corpses. The one at the front turns and scolds the squealing goblin harshly, at which he silences.
I'm ruling they have to Move, not Run, while dragging the bodies. They move four yards due north. Moved on map.
With the approach of the monk and his growling dog, the three goblins in the grave clamber out on the northeast side. They are up out of the hole, their excitable voices tittering amongst themselves, making sure they don't approach Eiji but hurry after their breathren by leaving the open grave behind them.
They had to Move to climb out of the hole, but now that they're out they can Run next turn. They are moved 4 yards northeast.
Moved on map.
(Round 2, Phase 10)
Pausing here for Souta's primary action.
Toshizo then goes on Phase 9. Then Eiji (if he charges the goblins, I will use the rolls above), Souta again, Ha, Toshizo again, Souta again, and finally Taka.

Souta flips her katana free of the saya with her thumb and casts aside her bow. She charges in the dim light and strikes at the bakemono-sho she hit with an arrow only moments ago.

(BCS 10)[1d20]=12; Damage [1d6 +2]=err12 Lethal

I think I am counting 20 hexes allowing a charge with a strike at the end. I mucked up the annotation for the damage roll and I didn't look at the environmental modifiers to the attack but will take a look at those rules in the morning.

*Edit: I would like to make a case for the attacker being at the target's side facing +5, unable to see (-9-1 = -8), charging +1 and the target is passive +5, unable to see attacker +9-level of target = +12-level of target

Here is a redo of the damage roll with the correct annotation, Damage [1d6]=4+2, Lethal

Can Eiji charge one of the Bakemono? It looks like he's 6 yards away.

Turn Order:
Phase 16: Jīva (Basic Action)
Phase 12: Bakemono-sho (Basic Action)
Phase 10: Souta (Basic Action)
Phase 9: Toshizo (Basic Action)
Phase 6: Eiji (Basic Action); Souta (Secondary Action)
Phase 5: Ha (Basic Action)
Phase 4: Toshizo (Secondary Action)
Phase 3: Souta (Secondary Action)
Phase 2: Taka (Basic Action)
(Round 2, Phase 10)
Souta stows her bow and flips her katana free of the saya with her thumb. She charges in the dim light and strikes at the bakemono-sho she hit with an arrow only moments ago. Her blade slices downward hard on the rear of his shoulder, making the small creature cry out in pain again as his haori split open and soaked in blood. (-6)
You had two secondary actions and could have used one to STOW WEAPON and one to DRAW WEAPON, so you can switch to your katana without issue and not lose your bow. You then charge in the current action phase.

You are correct that it is 20 hexes/yards from the space you occupy to the one he occupies. Optimal range for a katana (medium weapon) is with 1 yard of space between you, so you actually only run 18 yards. You have two yards left to position or adjust facing if needed.

*Edit: I would like to make a case for the attacker being at the target's side facing +5, unable to see (-9-1 = -8), charging +1 and the target is passive +5, unable to see attacker +9-level of target = +12-level of target
  • I assumed you'd want the rear facing (+10) over the side facing (+5)? You can have side facing if you want it.
  • There's dim light from the fire and stars (it's not pitch black like a cave) so I am not applying the "unable to see" to either of you.
  • You get Charging +1.
  • He's not passive. :) He IS "moving" which would impact ranged combat but not melee combat.

Katana (BCS 10) at optimal range of 1 yard (+0) after a charge (+1) in side facing (+5) against AC 3 (-3) = BCS 13. Your roll of 12 hits. You do 6hp damage and he is now engaged by you (affects his available options).

You can hit him again at half-BCS on a secondary action attack, which you can do on phase 6 and again on phase 3. You are no longer charging, so that's BCS 12/2=6 in side facing or BCS 17/2=8 in rear facing. If you fear counterattack, you could use the Parry secondary action in Phase 3 to raise your AC until your next phase, which covers their single attack. (Make sure you include a BCS roll if you Parry, too.)
(Round 2, Phase 9)
His first arrow thudding into the ground, Toshizo draws and fires again, still hoping to protect Eiji as the goblins clamber from the open grave. His arrow arcs upward in the darkness and then comes down, the broadhead plunging deep into the chest of the bakemono-sho, the feather fletching sticking upward at a sharp angle. (-13) The creature squeals in agony.
Toshizo's BMA is normally 6 (from Speed 20) and while partially encumbered it is 5 (from Speed 15). Even with a run/charge, he can't reach a foe, so I am assuming he's continuing to use his bow. (I'm using that action so we can get to Eiji, too.) If you want to change Toshizo's target (I am assuming the same, to protect Eiji) or his action (running instead of shooting) I will change it for you.

He is 20, 20, and 22 yards from the goblins heading to the cave and 17, 18, and 18 yards from the goblins at the graveside.

Toshizo shoot [1d20]=16 [2d6]=8[2d3]=4
I rolled wrong, not accounting for point-blank.
Toshizo shoot [1d20]=5 point blank damage [3d6]=7[3d3]=6
Firing Dai-Kyu (BCS 12) at point blank range (+2) with a bowel-raker arrow (-2) while partially encumbered (-1) against Armor Class 3 (-3) when the target is Moving (-2) = BCS 7. You rolled a 5 and do 13 damage.
(Round 2, Phase 6)
With Jiva pacing at his side, Eiji steps forward and smacks the squalling bokemono-sho with his monk's spade, knocking it unconscious. It collapses forward onto the mound of grave dirt as its two companions look on wide-eyed and prepare to abandon and flee.
ffilz wrote: Tue Sep 28, 2021 2:59 am Can Eiji charge one of the Bakemono? It looks like he's 6 yards away.
Yes he can! :) Actually, he can't! :D

Your monk's spade is a Long weapon, so your optimal range is stopping when you're two yards away. With them having clambered out of the grave, you only move two yards to reach that positioning and a Charge requires at least three yards of movement. So, what you actually do is Close to Engage, then hit on your same turn, rather than charging double and waiting until Phase 2 to hit.

I am then applying this roll:
ffilz wrote: Sun Sep 26, 2021 9:38 pm If Eiji catches up to a Bakemono he will whop it with his spade trying to make it drop the corpse.

Spade whop (bo):

You are swinging your monk's spade with bojitsu (BCS 8) at optimal range of two yards (+0) in its rear facing as it flees (+10) against AC 3 (-3) = BCS 15. Your roll of 5 hits, you do 2 subdual damage.

The two remaining goblins there are Engaged by you (at Long range), which affects their options.
Pausing here for Souta's secondary action on Phase 6 and Ha's action on phase 5 (plus any other declarations, since the bakemono-sho don't go again until the top of the next turn.)

I assumed side facing because the bakemono-sho is dragging a body along behind it. That is also why I assumed passive - it isn't actively engaged in the fight, it is passive as far as the encounter because it is focused on its task of dragging the corpse. That is where my thinking was on it at any rate.

Souta slashes again at the Bakemono-sho and returns her katana to a defensive position to leave her body less exposed to any retaliatory strikes.

(BCS 5)[1d20]=12; Damage [1d6]=3+2 Lethal
Parry (BCS 10)[1d20]=18

Yes - thanks for asking. I clarified in a spoiler somewhere above that both Ha and Toshizo were now aware of both groups. They are in dim light beyond the fire. You see Souta engaged with the rearmost goblin of one group, Eiji engaged with the other group, and Toshizo (behind you) shot an arrow.

Taka peers across the light of the fire vaguely aware of the dangers as her companions head in different directions away from the hideout. Her unanswered question hangs in the air behind the twang of bow strings and the thudding sound of a spade. She looks deeply into the heart of the fire to distance herself from the activity taking place directly around her, empties her mind of distraction, and attempts to send her mind from the utsushiyo to the kakuriyo. Her body grows cold with the attempt, the utsushiyo darkens around her, and her body remains planted firmly with her eyes gazing into the fire Souta prepared. The fire crackles and spits embers into the air and Taka's mind wanders back unsuccessful in the attempt.

Toshizo drew a willow leaf arrow from his quiver and loosed it at a warty bake near Eiji.

If the first bakemono-sho is still alive, he'll shot it. If dead, he shoots at the one next-closet to Eiji.
BCS 12, +2 (point blank), +0 (willow leaf), -1 (partially encumbered) = BCS 13.
[1d20+1]=19+1=20[2d6+2]=8+2=10
Damage is wrong, a willow leaf arrow shouldn't get +2. Actual damage is 6 HP instead of 10.

Turn Order:
Phase 16: Jīva (Basic Action)
Phase 12: Bakemono-sho (Basic Action)
Phase 10: Souta (Basic Action)
Phase 9: Toshizo (Basic Action)
Phase 6: Eiji (Basic Action); Souta (Secondary Action)
Phase 5: Ha (Basic Action)
Phase 4: Toshizo (Secondary Action)
Phase 3: Souta (Secondary Action)
Phase 2: Taka (Basic Action)
(Round 2, Phase 6)
With Jiva pacing at his side, Eiji steps forward and smacks the squalling bokemono-sho with his monk's spade, knocking it unconscious. It collapses forward onto the mound of grave dirt as its two companions look on wide-eyed and prepare to abandon and flee.

Souta slashes again at the Bakemono-sho, but the warty little creature ducks under the swinging blade, still gripping its corpse-prize. She returns her katana to a defensive position to leave her body less exposed to any retaliatory strikes.
Samwell Turleton wrote: Tue Sep 28, 2021 8:01 pm I assumed side facing because the bakemono-sho is dragging a body along behind it. That is where my thinking was on it at any rate.
I see Passive as literally not moving - I used that for the lazy guards in the tower, lounging at the end of their watch just before dawn. The continuum is Passive (+2), normal (+0), Walking (-2), and Running (-4). Realistically, these goblins would be Heavily Encumbered (reducing their movement) and then running (as double that reduced rate). That seemed silly to me and not worth the extra math, so I'm counting them as Walking and unable to run with the load. That's about the same amount of movement but gives you -2 penalty instead of -4.
(Round 2, Phase 5)
Ha launches an arrow at the goblins ahead of Souta, the arrow sailing past them and into the dark, clattering against the stone cliffside.
It is 19 yards to the first one and 20 to the second, but Ha has the massive 4-man bow, so anything on the map is within his point-blank.

Firing Dai-Kyu (BCS 13) at point blank range (+2) with an armor-piercing arrow (+1) against Armor Class 3 (-3) when the target is Moving (-2) = BCS 11. You rolled a 15 - Miss.
(Round 2, Phase 2)
Taka peers across the light of the fire vaguely aware of the dangers as her companions head in different directions away from the hideout. Her unanswered question hangs in the air behind the twang of bow strings and the thudding sound of a spade. She looks deeply into the heart of the fire to distance herself from the activity taking place directly around her, empties her mind of distraction, and attempts to send her mind from the utsushiyo to the kakuriyo. Her body grows cold with the attempt, the utsushiyo darkens around her, and her body remains planted firmly with her eyes gazing into the fire Souta prepared. The fire crackles and spits embers growing from a physical light into a spiritual one, the warm glow expanding around her. But equally, the mouth of the cave opens and expands, pure spiritual blackness, an enveloping mass of anti-light rushing forcefully towards her. Taka is startled and loses her concentration, blinking back into the real world, her breathing rapid.

(Round 3, Phase 14)
From the darkness of the cave, a watakushi arrow with tremendous force whirs past Souta's head and into the night beyond. In the dim light, none see this but her. (Round 3, Phase 12)
Taking their cue from the errant bowshot, the three bakemono-sho turn in unison and leap to attack Amano Souta! They each hold a wakizashi, which they had been hiding in their hand beneath the corpses they were dragging. The first two turn to face her, rushing her with their short sword blades. She deftly maneuvers the first blade, but the second catches her with precision (-6). The third goblin, heavily wounded by Souta already, sidesteps and lashes out at her with all of its hatred and malice, plunging the sword deep into the side of her abdomen (-18). Even in the dim light, the others see Souta buckle as the three bakemono-sho converge.
Bakemono-sho [1d20]=14[1d6]=4 [1d20]=3[1d6]=6 [1d20]=1[1d6]=6
Critical hit [1d10]=4[1d20]=18
They each are attacking with BCS 10 with hinderance for other attackers (-2) against Souta's AC (-3) with Souta parrying (-1) = BCS 4, adjusted for their positioning individually.

#1: Rotated two facings, advanced two hexes, attacks from Souta's front facing and misses.
#3: Rotated one facing and side steps left (2 movement) not quite reaching Souta's side facing. Critical hit rolled Triple Damage (6x3=18).
#2: Rotated one facing and moves three hexes, attacking from Souta's front facing (where #3 was previously). Hits for 6 damage.
Total of 24 damage.

As a first level character, you have 1 Ki point. You can use it to remain standing and active for one round (i.e the rest of round 3 until the end of their action on phase 12 on round 4) - acting by pure force of will. Or, you can collapse but use it to self-stabilize to 0 hit points and be only unconscious. If you don't choose to self-stabilize, you took 24 lethal damage - you die at 20 lethal damage (hp+level). If you die, Eiji is skilled in Raja-yoga but needs to succeed at BCS 4 to resurrect you. You can state which you pick and what she does (collapse or take the round's actions) accordingly.)
Seeing their companion taken down by the arrow and the monk's shovel, the other two goblins turn and flee, running towards the cave mouth past Souta. (They 'turn' on Phase 12, breaking Eiji's engagement of them, and will run 4 hexes on phase 6.)

Pausing for Souta's choice/action. Others may also amend their actions.
