I agree about keeping Rhys visible for the moment, until the PCs find out what happened to Saul. However, I'm not sure we have a place to tether our mounts. TK has indicated that there are no trees in sight. I suggest we ride in a wide arc to the left side, disembark at the shore of the lake, leaving the horses in Semele's care, and then proceed on foot to the opening in the western wall.zebediah wrote:Drudsa the dabbler

If there is any danger inside those walls it apparently is still unaware of our presence so let us take advantage of that."

In all fairness to you, TK, if you cannot easily discern an action from a player's post, then maybe you should just post the update as no action taken by that character.thirdkingdom wrote: ...when I have to constantly divine intentions from unclear posts it begins to feel too much like work and not so much fun.
"Rhys stands there, muttering to himself," or some such thing.
Hopefully it wouldn't take too many updates like that for the point to be made.
Not sure how guilty I've been of that offense in the past, but I'll certainly endeavor to make future posts contain clear and concise actions where an action is required.

Re: OOC IV
Luis, have you stopped playing in this campaign? Man, I am going to miss having Saul in our group. I loved the character concept and Saul's flair. He had a lot of depth, and was not one of the typical thieves that one sees people usually play.
I have been working on a drawing, too, depicting Saul just before he headed down the dark steps to get the troll's attention. It's the most vivid image I have, when thinking about all of the encounters we've had so far. Wish you were still here to check it out.
When it comes to the written word, it's so easy to misinterpret intent and feelings -- even the actual, literal meaning of the writer's words does not come through clearly to the reader. And it happens in both directions: from DM to player, and from player to DM. One thinks they are communicating clearly, yet the reader still not does understand the words completely. I think this situation is the result of us being human. (I know I encounter it on a daily basis at work.)
TK, would it make things easier for you (and at the same time allow us to creatively express ourselves) if we added a separate piece to our posts, in a spoiler, so that you can move the game along? Something like.....
That way, you can jump right to the piece you need as a DM, and at the same time we can be free to add our role-playing piece, without it getting in the way of game mechanics.
Honestly, there are a few reasons why I enjoy this particular campaign. It's not only the steady pace of it. It's the way TK describes scenes and actions. And it's the interesting and diverse mix of personalities of our players. You've created a beautiful tapestry, TK, with your description of the world and the beings within it. We each just want to add our creative piece to your art. The role-playing part of the campaign is as important to me as the clear intent part is for the DM. If we added only our intentions, in the interest of clarity, devoid of any role playing color, I'd rather not be a part of the campaign.
I guess what I am saying is that I hope that clear intent and role playing content can coexist in this game!

The only problem with this is that the rest of the party is waiting for this one player to act. As far as Luis' complaints, the only thing I'd say in response is that he sounds like a guy who's never DM'ed a game before. Being a DM gets very frustrating when you spend literally an hour or more on setting up an encounter and one player spends two minutes writing a post and complains when he's asked to do more.Luis wrote:If I have to spell out that I'm approaching the damned hole before I actually try to get inside and get snappy remarks then we have a problem especially since I can't tell you apart from a text adventure parser. Enter castle>look>go North>look hole>enter hole. Whoops, wrong sintax *insert snide remark that I don't post often enough or have enough detail* I thought the whole point of a pnp RPG was that the DM was supposed to advance the story instead of stalling the bloody thing by nitpicking such a simple request.
DMs make the game go; without TK we'd all be screwed. If the guy asks you to spend a few more minutes on your post to make it clearer, put yourself in his shoes before you criticize. If you still think he's asking too much of you, then you're right, TK isn't the DM for you.
Re: OOC IV
Whow! Wait. Saul... Please don't leave the game. TK. . . don't kill him. please. I think we all can learn from what is happening here.
Saul, you have been spreading yourself thin. From what I understand, English is not your first language. Also it is really hard to role play, and delineate what your intentions are at the same time. I think what Bregalad said is good. We can role play, and then put our exact intentions in a spoiler. That way TK does not have to sort through our role playing to get to what we are intending.
Saul. I really like your Character. I would hate for you to give him up.
TK. . This is a game. It has carried me through some tough times already. You are a really good DM. I just don't feel that this is a good way for Saul to leave.
Can we please just leave off where Saul looks into the hole? I think we can pick up from there. . . please.

Re: OOC IV
I wouldn't worry with adding intentions in spoilers. The issue wasn't so much that his intentions were being lost in role-playing, it was that his intentions were consistently -- and I mean that quite literally -- vague and difficult for me to parse. Here is what I would have like to have seen:
You can add as much fluff as you want to something like that, but the fact is that it tells me a)exactly what the PC wants to do b)how the PC wants to do it and c)that the player has been paying attention to what I have been -- spending a fair amount of time -- posting. For instance, he kept referring to the pit as a well, which I never described it as such.Saul advances cautiously, aware that while invisible he must still take care not to make any additional noise or slip of the foot. He approaches the partially covered pit, peering down inside from as far away as possible in case man-eating gribblies dwell within. He then tiptoes up to the empty gateway, pokes his head inside, and scans the interior of the courtyard. Finally, he will make his way to the break in the wall, picking his way through rubble on the ground as he examines it as a possible entrance. If his movements are detected, Saul will freeze in place and hope any creatures chalk it up to the scurrying of small chipmunks.
Re: OOC IV
I certainly agree that IC posts can have both clear actions and intentions as well as colorful roleplaying. I really aim for both of those things in each and every IC post I make. I know I'm not always successful at it, and I sometimes find myself editing my posts for further clarity after realizing that my initial post might cause a little confusion for the DM or other players. But it is certainly possible to have both clear and colorful posts.
One rule of thumb I generally try to follow for IC posting (and this is just a personal preference) is that I usually try to write about my PC's actions and words, rather than his thoughts and feelings. I find that doing this helps me to make my intentions more clear and concise, while still allowing plenty of room for role-playing, character development, and character interaction.

Re: OOC IV
Can we time our actions so that we drop a Sleep spell on the gnolls and then Marodin attempts to Hold Person on as many of the ones unaffected by Sleep? By then, we could have our melee fighters close enough to engage any of them still moving before they can wake the others.
Re: OOC IV
Hold Person on the brute in the burnished plate mail (with a -2 to their Save) might not be a bad idea. They seem to be pretty unorganized as it is. Without leadership, they could be much less efficient... And more likely to fail a morale check, as well.
Something to consider for the future: With the ability to affect 4 creatures (even with the saving throw vs. spells to negate), Hold Person might be a more powerful mass attack spell than Sleep. As we found out earlier, sleeping enemies can be awakened. Held enemies, however, cannot be unheld except by more powerful spell means (or the reverse of Hold Person) so they must remain that way for 90 minutes. Three Hold Person spells cast at the gnolls would effectively neutralize most of that group, statistically speaking.

Re: OOC IV
After receiving some pms I feel a farewell post is in order. Might as well take my lead from Captain Hook and present Saul's Last Will and Testament, last updated before he left for this current adventure. I assume Saul will probably die, considering how and where I left him it only makes sense.
As I said to some who asked, I would consider coming back if presented with a apology. I agree I could have been clearer in some instructions but I feel some remarks were out of line, especially those regarding my posting habits.
As it stands, I present Saul's last words:
My friends,
If you are reading this you are either going through my things, in which case I beg you to stop reading and take whatever else you need, or I got myself in more trouble than I could handle and I'm now dead.
If that's the case, well, that's just rotten luck but there isn't a lot we can do about that now and I probably deserved it. I just hope there wasn't any wizardry involved in my demise or some disease, a straight up fight is a much finer death than dying without having a chance to defend myself.
I have made my peace with this life a long time ago. I've hungered and shivered and did my best to improve my lot in life, often at the expense of others who could afford to lose something. I've done my evil, I've done my good too and I'd like to think I've amended for the first with the second.
It was a pleasure to adventure with you for these past weeks and I'm proud to have called you all my friends and to have accomplished so much in so little time.
You have all kept me sane. Without you to keep me grounded I would probably have taken my first share of treasure and wasted it all on women. I hope when you read this I managed to save enough to buy a small farm, find a good wife and keep the law of the land with a silver pin proudly on my chest.
Given the nature of our line of work it's likely all of that didn't happen as planned so at the very least I hope I became a valuable party member and I will be missed.
Regarding my possessions, what little they may be (assuming anything can be recovered):
I would like my gold to be divided evenly among all of you.
Bregalad, all of you are good people but, although I didn't know you as well as I should, I know you will always do the right thing, even if it's not in your best interest. I would like you to have Castanha. She is a good, strong horse, smart and hard-working and she can be fast when needed. She isn't picky about her food but please give her an apple every once in a while, it's her favorite. If you can't afford to keep her please find someone who will take good care of her.
Lanny, out of everyone you were the one I knew best. Many days I gave thanks for the banter we shared. I can give you little but I feel Hedfan should belong to you. Tratlin or Bregalad would also take good care of it although I think you might put it to better use.
Innanna, I had the pleasure of your company for only a little time but you were always an interesting person. I loved the way you addressed people, how you handled children and the way you just kept producing ribbons out of your hair. I would like you to have known you better. I can only give you my two pieces of amber. They aren't worth much but i believe you can fashion them into something far more valuable to remember me by. I won't mind if you cash them in but I would be proud if you wore them.
Rhys, it was only recently that we've met but I would like you to have my bow. It has served me well and I believe it will be good to you as well.
Thordin, you are a wise and brave person and I enjoyed fighting beside you. There is little I can offer you that you could use so I hope you can forgive me if I only offer you my mirror so you can always tend to that burned beard of yours, may it regrow to it's majesty soon and may it be celebrated in many songs.
Drudsa, to you I leave you my Lantern. May it lit your path as it did mine. You were a good friend.
Marodin, to you I leave my goggles. Beware of them as they may cause you some headaches. Used carefully they may prove useful to you in the dark.
Tratlin, I'm afraid I can give you nothing besides a share of my fortune. Don't take offense, you were a good ally but I feel there's nothing that would be of any use for you. Feel free to help yourself to you any of my remaining gear if you can find a use for it, maybe my armor will fit you.
Semele, I'm sorry but I can give you nothing of value that you could use beyond a share of my wealth. You can have my cloak, it's probably a bit large for but you'll grow into it and keep you warm. I can also give you some advice even though you are very close to my age: You are a brave young woman but you should find someplace safe where you could perform your duty to the Immortals and leave this adventuring life. That is what I'd like, nothing would make me happier than your safety, but I know that you've acquired a taste for adventure so listen to Marodin, he is wise, although he doesn't talk much, so pay close attention to him and you should be fine. If it's not too much to ask I'd like you to say a little prayer for me every once in a while.
Grey Jake and Meagnor, if they ever return, give them my love.
I hope I didn't forget anyone.
As for my requests, I won't bother you much. If at all possible please give my ashes a proper resting place near civilization, not just a shallow grave in the middle of nowhere. There's no one to mourn me, aside from all of you, or so I hope, but I'd rather not be forgotten somewhere. Having said that, don't take any chances for me, I wouldn't feel right if anyone was hurt over my remains.
One thing I beg of you is that you don't attempt to resurrect me. I love you all but I don't want to risk anything going wrong. I also believe there are new adventures in the afterlife and maybe I'm fated for them. That's not to say that if I am needed here I won't take my chances for you but I hope you understand if I crave for the adventures in front of me, not those I left behind, even if it pains me to leave you with them.
Have fun, do good, think of me sometimes and If I don't see you no more in this world, I'll meet you on the next one. I hope you'll be late and keep me waiting for a long time but I'll greet you all there.
I had to sneak in a few lyric references in there, it just wouldn't be a Saul post without some pop-culture thrown in.
From me, Luís, it was a pleasure playing with you. I never played for so long without life getting in the way and my groups disbanding and I will always remember you and your characters. I'm sorry I didn't bond as much with some as with others but, as in real life, people are drawn to some people and not to others, I felt the same should apply to Saul and his companions. Don't take this as a slight to you or your character, it was only a matter of circumstances.
I hope we can meet each other one day in some other game. My character will buy your's a drink and tell you of this dream he had about a thief and his friends.
Cheers,
Luís

Saul,
I am sad to see you go this way. I wish that it was on good terms, and that you were leaving Sauls character to come back as a character that made you more happy playing.
I do understand that people have heated days. I look at heated days as a low dice roll. You just did not get what you wanted or expected from the moment. The dice just was not in Saul's favor. The stars were not aligned. However you want to say it. I was hoping that Saul could come back because I think he was an important part of our group, and he always made Innana feel special with his attention.
You will remain in Innana's heart if I do not see you again. I will use the amber to create something that will connect us by memory when I look at it.
Amber is one of my favorite stones. I think Innana will like it too.

Re: OOC IV
Luis,
I'm sorry things didn't work out for you in this game, but there are definitely some great memories you helped to create (I still think Lanny's and Saul's plotting on how to avoid paying the bill for a meal, because both of them were broke, was one of the funniest moments in the game IMHO). And a nice job, by the way, on Saul's final will and testament. If indeed we find that Saul has met his demise, Lanny will try his best to honor his friend's last wishes.
Anyway, I hope there are no bad feelings lingering, and that you stick around for awhile on the site. Perhaps, as you said, we will bump into one another in another game some day and swap stories of the glory days of Aleena's Alliance!

Re: OOC IV
TK, I will be traveling with limited internet access until next Tuesday (24 September) so it's likely that I will not be able to post until then. If that is fine with you I will leave a set of actions that Drudsa would most likely perform in the following rounds.
Given the current scenario Drudsa will:
1. try to kill the sleeping gnolls if he can do that safely (without approaching or being approached by other enemies);
1.1. failing that he will move back to a safe distance and provide missile fire with his sling if there is any enemy not in melee with his companions (Drudsa will not shoot into melee);
1.2. if more enemies approach or if the gnolls start to get the upper hand in combat Drudsa will cast Magic Missile at the enemy that appears to be the strongest or in better shape
2. if he manages to kill the sleeping gnolls and the other party members are managing to defeat the other enemies Drudsa will check the belongings of the dead gnolls for anything noteworthy;
3. after dealing with the sleeping gnolls he will check the paralysed enemies (if others aren`t doing that already) and will see if he is able to tie them down or otherwise restrain them physically so if the spell is dismissed they will not present a threat. He will also check their belongings if possible.
