To be clear, the footprints primarily move from one door to the next. In both directions. Some prints scatter off the path a bit, towards the north- and south-west corners.

The key observation Nella is able to make is that the tracks rarely pass between the two pillars.

Pillar Room
"Do goblinoids honor their dead?" Nella queries in response to Lika's suggestion that the area might possibly be a sacred place to honor the dead.

"There must be a living space with a water source somewhere in this section of the floor," the baroness reminds Unari and Gruthuuk before they advance. "Remain focused on our most immediate needs."



Scouting Ahead
"I will go first. I will stay to the left, you follow 10 feet back." Unari whispers to Gruthuuk, then, without making another sound, the ranger stalks down the hallway, staying left, bow at the ready.

After twenty feet or so, just as her bugbear companion shared moments earlier, the halfling reaches the entrance to the adjoining area, which appears unoccupied... save what looks like the legless skeletal remains shackled against the wall in an alcove set into the far left wall (from her vantage point).


Another alcove, ahead and slightly to her right, appears to be filled with piles upon piles of bones.

The absence of noise or activity is a bit disconcerting.

"Most curious. The pile of bones suggests a large predator. The lack of other signs of habitation do as well." Lika stays in the rear, just at the opening to the larger room.

She responds to Nella's comment about the footprints not going between the columns: "A trap maybe? Or something sacred. Either way, follow their lead and don't go between the pillars."

Skeletons
Backtracking to the previous room, Gruuthuk signals for those still behind to follow him.

Careful to avoid passing between the two pillars, the group presses forward. Lika and Nella linger in rear-guard position, with the latter continuing her practice of closing the doors leading to the rooms the group leaves behind.



Twenty feet or so ahead opens into the adjoining area -- an oddly shaped space.


In an alcove set into the far left well (from the group's vantage point), legless skeletal remains can be seen shackled against the far wall.

Another alcove, ahead and slightly to the right, appears to be filled with piles upon piles of bones.


Unari is far across the room, standing in front of another door leading deeper into the dungeon.

The odd-shaped room is intriguing to Nella's artist-eye, and the dismembered, still-hanging skeleton worth remembering for a later sketch. Approaching and shining her light on things without physically disturbing them, she:
  • Approaches the hanging skeleton to find any details of who it was or what happened. Clothing, insignia, race of humanoid, age, etc. With her physician training, she also notes how the legs were separated (broken, torn, post-mortem, pre-mortem) and other wounds that appear on the skeletal superstructure.
  • She then approaches and shines the light on the pile of bones area. First to see anything obvious about them - placed or haphazard? Chewed or preserved? Anything besides bones peaking from the pile? Patterns in the bones, or walkway through the bones? She then carefully studies the walls of the chamber for secrets.
  • As she brings up the rear, she will pause to examine the small alcove opposite the door that Unari and Guthruuk now examine. It is likely to have secret accesses. Are there evidence of foot traffic into that small dead-end?

Room of Bones
Across the room, the scouts continue to scout. After Gruuthuk inspects and listens at the exit door and deems it safe, Unari cracks it open and finds herself peering down a long hallway that terminates in another door after approximately sixty feet:

The two different sections of skeletal remains back in the room fuel Nella's intrigue. The baroness approaches the partial skeleton off to her left first, approaching it cautiously.

Shining her light on the upper half of the shackled skeleton, she makes the following observations:
  1. The manacles the partial skeleton dangles from display a fair amount of rust, suggesting two things:
    1. The manacles suggest the skeleton was a prisoner;
    2. The rust suggests that the prisoner has been in place for a very long time.
  2. The skeletal remains, while human-sized and shaped, present an anatomy that is slightly different;
  3. In fact, stubs from what used to be horns appear to have been cut or somehow removed from the cranium -- suggesting the prisoner was a tiefling;

Written on the wall above the skeleton in dried blood are some strange symbols of glyphs. Possibly an unknown language, but possibly not?

Xanlanan slides over, 'Glyphs you say? Hmmm.... fascinating. Oh! They are written in, ummm, blood I see. Well then. That is, well, that's fascinating..." He tends to trail off not trying to dwell on the gruesome design of the scrawled words.

He studies them askew, it seems - trying to first look at them - and not look at them - at the same time. "One can't be too careful with unknown symbols! They can be quite insidious! Cause all sorts of harm and inconvenience!" He further tries to read them by glancing by them quickly to not trigger any hidden magical trap ensorcelled within them. If nothing untoward occurs, he'll read them with all curiosity.

Noticing the others are not pressing forward to keep up with the advance scouts, the bugbear points this out to Unari. Others not coming. Looking at dead guy.

"Lika, Xanlanan, can either of you read these glyphs?" Nella queries while fiddling through her pack to retrieve some parchment. While the pair heed her call, she begins to jot down a depiction of the symbols on display.

Xanlanan slides over, reaching the remains first. "Glyphs you say? Hmmm.... fascinating." the sorcerer begins. "Oh! They are written in, ummm, blood I see. Well then. That is, well, that's fascinating..." He makes an effort to avert his gaze -- then, when nothing becomes of his quick, askew glances, he steadies himself. "One can't be too careful with unknown symbols! They can be quite insidious! Cause all sorts of harm and inconvenience!" he cautions.

The half-elf is unable to make sense of the characters depicted above the rotting corpse of the prisoner.

Lika, their feathered companion, ambles over and he, too, fails to decipher the symbols, shrugging his wings.

After a couple of minutes of careful drawing, Nella is able to complete her sketch of what appears to be eight symbols... noting that one of the characters appears to repeat.
