Against the Giants ASOIAF [CLOSED]

#1 Post by Magnus »

As I have discussed in my intro thread, I have long wanted to run a modified version of Against the Giants set North of the Wall in Westeros, a location from the Game of Thrones television series (and underlying books). This not intended to be an exercise in trivia about this fantasy world. Rather, my point is to leverage a classic gaming scenario into an amazing fantasy setting to produce something familiar and new at the same time.

Specifically, the campaign is set in Westeros, ca. 431*. As shown on the timeline below, this is approximately 400 years prior to Aegon’s crossing, and 700 years prior to the events of Game of Thrones.

*Westeros Timeline: http://awoiaf.westeros.org/index.php/Ti ... jor_events
viewtopic.php?f=63&t=1062

The Seven Kingdoms are in their adolescence, though, interestingly enough, their borders and relative strength at this time is roughly equivalent to their status at the beginning of Game of Thrones. They are, however, not unified whatsoever by a common monarch, and currently engaged in the expected rivalries, deception, and all-out war. As the game is set entirely in points North of Winterfell (with the majority of the action North of the Wall), the particular political machinations of the time are of little consequence, except for character backgrounds and to set the stage for the game. The characters face threats much more dire and terrifying than the petty squabbles of man could conceive.

Also important: Valyeria is at the height of its power in Essos. The world sings with its magic and trembles at the sound of its dragons’ roar. Most in-game, non-unique magic items derive from Valyeria. The Doom is roughly 300 years away.

Also note that I am going to change the modules enough where familiarity with them does NOT disqualify the players. Though, of course, do not read them again until you are finished with the game.

From a mechanics standpoint, I am going to use the OSRIC rules and aspire to a high post rate. I am a heavy user of DM Fiat and "the rule of cool." I am neither a tyrant nor a pushover. Most players have found my games immersive, challenging, and fun.

Please let me know if you are interested and have any questions. 8-)

As I stated in your 'introductions' thread, I am very interested! Consider me signed up, whenever this gets off the ground. Love the setting, too... I'm looking forward to seeing how this all works out :D

I am interested.

EDIT: Can you post a bit more about character creation (available classes, attribute generation, etc
)? I am guessing only humans, as well?

For anyone who might be interested in the concept of the game, but is unfamiliar with OSRIC rules, here is a direct link to the OSRIC .pdf from the Knights and Knaves website...

Sounds fun. I presume not knowing squat about GoT wouldn't be a problem?

Thanks everyone for the interest! I will work with the mods over the next few days to get something up and running. If you've posted above, you are in!

Regarding a few of the questions above:

- Characters will be restricted to human only, absolutely.

- All classes will be available, except for monk and illusionist.

- I will post the mechanics of character gen when the game thread is up.

- prior knowledge of the world is not a necessity. A quick and easy way to do a character background is to simply have a ranger, fighter, or thief who is in the service of the Night's Watch.

If you're taking another player or two, I'd like to put my name on the list. After all, my username is from the GoT series. ;)

Hey. You guys are both in.

I will take a roll call once I get the game thread up and running and see how many more players (if any) we should add.

I am waiting for the mods to open the game forum.

I will post my character creation rules this evening, either here or in the game forum (if it is open). Given that this is a relatively high-level game, the mechanics are going to permit players to choose the character class that they want.

In the meantime, this is an adventure that is going to require quite a bit of coordination and teamwork. I would encourage you all to discuss party composition and character concepts, both for tactical and thematic purposes.

All characters will know that they are going against wildlings, giants, and the megafauna that lives north of the wall. As such, there is no meta-gaming in planning to fight such foes.

Magnus, I'm really sorry to hear you don't have any interest in your game... Maybe try again in a few months, OK?

;)

(I'm sure ToniXX will get your campaign added in short order. :) )

The forum is open and I added everyone above as a user. (Including njwilliam, who I forgot in a list above.)

The group is a larger than I expected. Given this, and that I have a waitlist already, I am going to be fairly cold in terms of dropping inactive players.

I will be posting a character creation thread shortly. My goal is to have the characters done by Sunday night (US Pacific time).

If that is not realistic based on your schedule, please let me know by PM.

I would like to lurk, which I assume I can do by just reading the forum. I need to reacquaint myself with OSRIC rules in any case. I was away on vacation when you posted, so I assume you are full up. I'd like to see how PBP games are paced here in any case (new member) so I can make appropriate commitment to playing or running a game.

Thanks,

Geoff

Welcome Geoff!
Hope you find something you like!!
Be well,
--Ron--
This is a game about killing things and taking their stuff so you can become more powerful in order to kill bigger things and take even better stuff.
Alethan: I'm good with NOT pressing our luck this time.
mjulius: That's how I know I'm home.
Pulpatoon: The whole point of PbP is to take the scheduling pressure off the game. We're just chatty because we're so eager!
Scott308: ...everyone should be reminded of just how wonderful the people they play games with here can be in real life.
Leitz: Quality and quantity wise, I think US is the best I've seen.
Paladin: I can promise terror, glory, and riches...or a quick and brutal death.
Inferno: Come on! That's was Vicar's Head, a completely different doomed village!
Rex: I can move to the wait list to let someone else into the game.
