Ankanju Ratri Arrivals, Deep Space, Jodhild System

The man nods solemnly. "I wish there were more like you. We've had a few crews make the journey to help uproot these terrorists, but most are far traders here to charge a premium for refugee evac, or worse, mercenary brutes here to plunder and sell their guns to the other side. Commander Kavelin is no fool, but keeping the planet as open as possible means letting in the good with the bad. Anyway, we're tenuously in control anywhere above orbit, despite being spread ever thinner by increased criminal activity in the belts, but once you break atmo you're at the whims of Turov and her turncoats." You can tell that this state of affairs bothers him deeply. "There is some hope though. Those bastards are at least as keen as we are to minimise structural damage and civilian casualties, and there are still a lot of rational people willing to take up arms against this insurgency. This may be a war, but I doubt either side would fire indiscriminatingly on a medical vessel without a good reason."

After a few moments he seems to realise he's been freely talking off the record, and clears his throat to return to the bureaucratic monotone. "Your credentials are acknowledged and your flight plan transmitted to Fleet in orbit around Kakimedes, Captain. I've conditionally cleared you for planetary landing to the best my power allows. Fly safe, Ogilvy."

Stavros finally exhales as the comms switch off, unaware he was literally holding his breath on the outcome.

"Okay, when we land, we need to find this girl, fix the impound on our other ship, and get the girl and both ships off-planet. What's the plan?"

It looks like we lost Aghnar (offline since March 10) and Wei Xuan ( offline since April 29). We may need to plan without them and let them remain with the ship to keep our medical services cover?

Besides trying to inspire the remaining players into planning conversation... :)

As they make their way towards orbit and ultimately Planetside, Stavros makes discreet contact with those he knows on Kakimides. He needs to know who is in or near the city of Belokurikha... who was that girl from his medical class? I heard Sami was doctoring in the warzone, too. Oh, and Kelco was here, the MES archivist who I hoped could lead to the Divorian Fragment. Last visit I was sleeping with that grad student... Ivana - perhaps I should have called after...

We need to make contact and start moving to find this girl. Too dangerous to relay anything by comms from orbit about Katya Novaro, of course, that will be handled in person once he knows who's there and we can meet face-to-face.
Int+Connect [2d6+2] = 8+2 = 10
He will also check local news and listings to see if that provides any leads and to make sure we can concoct a convincing medical cover story for local conditions...

While Stavros checks the local news, Benedict checks into the local social network sites to get a more "local and un-doctored" feel for events on the ground.

Romer says, [dialogue] I have a few old friends in Belokurikha, or they were there. Quoll and Lassiter might be good for us to get in touch with to find the girl if anyone knows, I’d expect them to. And I’ll see if we can get the ball rolling on getting your ship cleared. Kidman runs that, I think he might be able to be convinced. [/dialogue]

Pulling out his datapad, Vymer queues up several messages to friends and business contacts who might be able to help him find his ship and sets them to ping off local-access sites once they're on the ground.

En Route to Kakimedes, Deep Space, Jodhild System
Monday 14-02-3200
01:50

After clearing the customs area, the Ogilvy begins the 23 hour journey towards Kakimedes; plenty of time for her crew to prime messages to potential contacts on the planet's surface. Before any replies are relayed back to them though, passive scans pick up a new signal approaching the Ogilvy's travel path, entering engagement range. A detection lock is confirmed on the medical vessel, and there is a request for open comms from the unknown ship. "Hi there, this is a Kakimedean Customs patrol. We need you to cut your engines and power down any weapon systems you might have armed, and maybe prepare for boarding. We don't want to shoot you, but we will if you don't follow our orders. Don't do anything dumb now." Contrary to Officer Preobrazhensky's formal monotone, the man seems impatient, excited even.
The ship appears to be frigate-sized, and is broadcasting no transponder codes. You initial passive scan detects two reaper batteries primed and locked onto the Ogilvy.

As the comms chirp to life, Odo shakes his head. "I don't like it. Something about this doesn't feel right. Pirates, maybe, and they don't sound that stable."

The old trader suddenly reels, catching himself on the nearby bulkhead, his other hand covering his eyes. "Wait..."

I'd like to commit an Effort to use Oracle. With that, I can get a brief vision related to a future I'm asking about, up to 1 day in the future. I'd like a vision of what happens if we submit, and potentially let them board.

Stavros goes wide-eyed at the secondary comms hail. He looks to Odo and Silas for negotiation or evasion, respectively.

"If you aren't going to get us our of here... swing around and get them visible through the front window there, okay?" he whispers to Silas. Stavros stands to the side, watching intensely out the front window. (Are they visible and within a kilometer?)

With no transponders there is no way this is legitimate. He narrows his eyes, looking for markings and tell-tales of any kind, the names, perhaps even a voice he's heard before, comparing them to what he knows of pirates in this system... he ran the spaceways long enough to know of the most infamous at least.
Int+Know [2d6+2] = 11+2 = 13

The voice just sounds so familiar....

Odo's vision is overcome with a brilliant white light, and then...

Code: Select all

...the men board the Ogilvy, her engines powered down as requested, three of them, heavy vaccsuits and boarding weapons, no insignia, the crew gathered at the loading bay to greet them, pretences dropped immediately, Anghar reacts first as shrapnel flies, one pirate drops, headless, two of the crew hit the floor bleeding, holes in their chests, shouting, the hideous scream of the enemy reapers tearing through the Ogilvy's hull, the cold emptiness of space...
...he opens his eyes, back in the now on the control room.

Damien knows this voice alright, though he may not know the man personally; all pirates sound the same when they think they've found easy money. His suspicions are confirmed as soon as the Ogilvy's cameras put the ship on main screen; since when did Kakimedes Customs patrols fly in modified TNS freighters? The ship continues its approach, now just a few kilometres away from boarding range. "Don't make me tell you again. Shut those engines down or we will open fire."
To clarify, these guys rolled absurdly well on their opposed detection check and managed to get right next to you undetected. They're about 3-4km away from you now, but will close to boarding range if you cut the power; unless you guys do so, we'll move to ship combat.

"Since when did Kakimedes Customs patrols fly in modified TNS freighters? No transponders?" Stavros says to the others. "Lying pirates." He falls silent, having little else to offer at this juncture, hoping action from Odo and Silas can dissuade them.

The scientist otherwise stands, starting out the front glass. He studies the pirate ship intently, muttering calculations to himself and drawing equations with his finger on the screen of his compad as he considers them.
Holding a ready action. When they get to 1km away (so as they close but before they're close enough to board), I can use energetic evocation.
If they aren't dissuaded and are coming at us, I'll conjure 4' x 4' x 2' of explosives attached to their hull with a detonator (TL3). I'll let you just arbitrate that.
He specifically targets their engines or ship weapons to disable them. If possible, he also wants it to knock their course so they're angled away from their approach to us.
[1d6] = 1[1d6] = 2[1d6] = 4 use best two rolls +2
Then sets the explosives to appear, attach, and explode before the ship is close enough for us to be impacted.
Energetic Evocation [2d6+2] = 11+2 = 13

"Pirates. They'll shoot as soon as they board. Don't shut down the engines," Odo declares in a hoarse voice. I don't think they're amenable to talking, either. We fight, or we run."

Silas nods to Stavros and grabs the mic.
"Patrol vessel, this is the Ogilvy. We copy, please give us a minute to come to a full stop. Disengaging engines shortly."

He does no such thing, of course, instead making sure the guns are powered and primed, and pointing Romer towards the multifocal laser turret. As soon as he hears the guns fire, he's prepared to execute evasive maneuvers.

"So you want to do this the hard way, huh? Fine by us!" Having waylaid a few ships in their time, the pirates are not fooled by Silas' attempt to stall them and open fire at the Ogilvy, targetting her weapons systems with uncanny accuracy. Warning claxons start screaming on the bridge as the fractal charges explode in storage, and the pirate freighter endeavours to stay in your blind spot.
The Ogilvy takes 1 point of damage and its Fractal Impact Charge has been disabled; you can Accept a Crisis (page 116) or continue onwards.

Benedict holds on tight and begins searching for any transponders in the area that may be friendly and willing to render aid.

Odo shudders with the ship as the reaper rounds strike their ship. His eyes widen as the metallic groaning grows in intensity rather than lessens. "Damian, get back there and figure out where that's coming from! Romer, are our guns ready to fire?"

Taking the "Deal with a Crisis" action! O CP. Cross-referencing here.

Damian Stavros whips off his lab coat and drops it on the floor of the bridge, already breaking into a run as Odo orders him to engineering. He pushes off the wall to keep his balance as the ship lurches underneath him, running back its length to grab his toolkit and dropping through a hatch into the keel compartment. The sound of the a damaged fractal charge whining up to full power while still in storage on the loader sends a chil down his spine.

That's F'ed," he says to himself. "Gotta launch it." He tries to cycle loader, chunking the damaged charge's cylinder to get it into the first position.

Int+Fix [1d6] = 1[1d6] = 2[1d6] = 4 +2
Only 8 vs difficulty 10! :o

There is a sickening grinding noise as the damaged loader sticks. He can't manually cycle it. He hits the intercom to the ship - "FIRE! Get those charges launched out of here!" Panic is evident in his voice. He braces himself against the wall for whatever is next.

Captain Odo up next. :)
