Quest # 9.5 "Missing Kids?"
Re: Quest # 9.5 "Missing Kids?"
Lightfinger listens to the music.
What is the absolute last thing one might expect to hear in a place like this? That, fellow Islandeers, is a trap, He points a surprisingly long finger in the air, The type of trap children may be snared in. I feel the trail ahead has been inspected well enough by that troop of ignoramuses... (Or is it ignorami?) ...we met. I'll follow you, Loomis, if you're heading into the forest. I'll try to let you see me from time to time, so you don't think me an enemy and eat me.

Avaala
"Sorry, Jack, that was rude of me. It's just that I'm not sure how to talk to you. Some things you say to an adult, you wouldn't say to a child. If I talk to you like a child, I'm afraid I might offend you. I do not know what to expect from you, nor what skills you possess. So, I asked someone who has known you longer than I have. I honestly beg your pardon."

Monocar
Grins at Jack but says nothing. He liked the little bugger. As they neared the opening to the path, he raised an eyebrow to the sound of a flute, not even sure he is really hearing it until he sees others perking up their ears. Looking around he draws the same conclusion as everyone else. Up the path. He draws his sword, his heart pounding. He was never scared going into the woods, but this jungle on this cursed island had nearly killed him once already, and they had just been warned about giant beetles. He hate himself for it, but he hoped their appitites were curbed by the two victims from the other party they met. He steps in front of Avaala again, "Watch my flanks and I'll cover the front. Saracen has our rear. Honestly, I am much more worried about something trying to come at the middle of our line from the side than head on. That's how the big cats back home did it..." Monocar falls into place behind Luthar and Jack.

Chauncey will stick close to the others as they venture into the treeline, for once refraining from comment. His hand hovers around his component pouch in case things get weird.

Luther
Yeah, prob'ly a trap of some kind. Keep your eyes open and your head moving. And if somebody hurt those kids, he grins at Avalaa, You'll have to wait your turn. Luther chuckles mirthlessly.
Sword in hand, he proceeds on the trail, moving very slowly. How wide is the trail here? and what does the forest look like to either side?

Missing Kids? Into the Bush!
Waterday, 24th of Reaping
Mid Afternoon, Hot, Muggy, Buggy
3.5 Hours Walk West Of Beachtown
The group stands at the edge of the jungle listening to the weird music floating on the breeze and steeling themselves for what they might find deeper in the forest. The party’s thief lets everyone know that this stinks badly of a trap. Monocar wonders about a big cat attack. Chauncey is anticipating something weird. Maybe they are all right.
Looking to their left, they can see the dark trail opening at the end of the beach where the other group came from. A few members cringe when they think about the how terrible a death must be when you are melted with acid. Luckily, their path will not take them down that trail, but straight into the thick of the jungle, right where they stand. Remembering the woman’s description of her friends being disolved, a few are actually glad to be entering here instead.
Luther leads the way with little Jack right behind him. Lightfinger slips into the underbrush and disappears, as thieves sometimes do. The others follow along behind, ready to rescue the children no matter what is making the music.
Chopping at the many natural gnarled obstacles that bar their way, the group enters deep into the foliage and follows the sounds of the eerie flautist. There is no trail here, just tiny footprints that also eventually disappear. Fortunately, the music gets louder the further in they get and it is easy enough to discern and follow. After several minutes of misery, being bitten, stung, crawled on, swacked in the face with branches, and cut by prickly thorn bushes and sharp fronds, the lead bushwhackers start to hear the weird music as plain as day.
It is hard to see very far through the thick bush, but just up ahead about 20 feet, the trees start to spread out a little where the jungle must open up into a small clearing. There is a large sphere of strange grey light emanating from the center of the clearing and the music is obviously coming from inside that light. From this distance, the light seems to be in a circle that is about 15 or 20 feet around. You are still too far away to make anything out, but there are definitely hints of shadowy movement coming from inside of the grey globe as well.

Lightfinger
The Halfling tries to get a better view, but realizes he'll need to get closer, thus exposing himself, and possibly the rest of the party, to danger. He rises just enough for the impossible-to-surprise Bear-Man Ranger to notice him. He traces a circle in the air with his finger, pointing 2 fingers at the party, then 1 to the glowing musical area, then points to himself and again to the glow. What seems to be the Hobbit equivalent of "Double-Dribble" follows with a sense of urgency.

Jack, lost boy:
Jack shrugs off Avaala's apology. "Um. Okay."
Jack doesn't understand what the hobbit is trying to say. But the ancient child is so intrigued by the magical light sphere that he resumes point position and silently sneaks closer to it, eyes wide, mouth agape, trying to recognize the melody or at least learn it.

Avaala
Remembering old tales of Sirens, Pied Pipers, and other musical traps, Avaala takes Rollo firmly by the collar. He's not sure if he's using his dog as an anchor to keep himself still, or if he's ready to hold Rollo back if the dog tries to approach the music, but it makes him feel better in any event.
"Good boy,"he says. "Very good boy."
The mage still keeps a firm grip on his staff with his other hand.

Saracen starts to sway to the beat of the melody. "At first I was afraid, I was petrified..." he begins to sing under his breath as he moves into the clearing and the pretty light show. It's clear from his two step shuffle that this half-orc has some hidden moves.

Re: Quest # 9.5 "Missing Kids?"
Chauncey feels an irresistable pull from the music of the sphere, which he resists. As Saracen begins shuffling towards the clearing he attempts to gently but firmly grab his orange robes and prevent him from advancing further, though his supreme confidence doesn't extend to his physical strength. Even though, now that he thinks about it, he's pretty buff for a magic user. "Saracen! hnnnnpt! wait!...stay away from the light, Saracen! ...a little help!" he whispers frantically.
Actually, though, now that he's holding on to the dancing half-orc, he feels the beat and realizes he was totally wrong to resist. He begins a conga style shuffle behind Saracen, kicking up his heels sporadically. "Let's celebrate good times, fellas! Come on!"

Luther
Stop these guys! Luther grabs Chauncey and begins dragging him back, hoping he can break the enchantment (??) by getting him out of range. If that doesn't work, he'll escalate to a quick punch in the jaw.

Missing Kids? Into the Bush!
Waterday, 24th of Reaping
Mid Afternoon, Hot, Muggy, Buggy

Despite Avaala’s attempts at keeping his dog calm, once Rollo also hears the eerie tune, he begins to bark loudly at the grey light. Most of the party stops dead in their tracks, but Saracen, Monocar, and Chauncey really seem to enjoy the lively beat of the flautist. They each begin to sashay and groove, attempting to get closer to the grey dome of light.
Luther notices this and attempts to grab at them as they pass him by. He manages to get a hold on Chauncey’s fairly beefy arm, but the wizard seems content to continue his way towards the light. Just as the ranger is about to haul back and clock the mage in the jaw, Saracen breaks past them both and bounds ahead into the circle of light.
As the others look on, Lightfinger sneaks back into the greenery. He begins moving around towards the back of the globe just as the priest of Pholtus breaks through the edge of the light. Anyone who is looking in that direction suddenly sees the light instantly dissipate. For just a split second, you could all swear that you see an elderly, grey hued man, sitting on a log and jamming hard on some type of horn.
A mere split second later, the grey visage passes from your vision and the flute music instantly fades away, leaving nothing left in the clearing except for three young children who were dancing around the form of the grey man while he played his horn. One by one the kids look up at you with angry expressions. A few members of the group recognize one of the kids as little Sally who introduced you to the skittish monkoons a few days ago. You can’t put your finger on it, but something seems strangely different about the little girl.
Other than the 3 children, the small clearing is empty and seems void of anything threatening. Rollo continues barking for a while, and then eventually settles down again. All three kids scowl at you once they realize what has happened. The two small boys look a little confused, but Sally seems the most upset of the three.
“Hey! I remember you guys! What happened to that cool music? And where did that little man go? You guys sure have a knack for chasing things away, don’t you?”

Saracen shakes his head, orange dreadlocks spinning around his confused head. Looking disappointed mid disco hip pop finger point the holy champion stands up straight and a strange colour suffuses his face.
"Yes ... errr ... well. Where the hell have you three been, and who was the music man? Is he coming back? Are there any more of you out here? The town was very worried about all. It's extremely dangerous out here, quit wandering off you buggers!" the warrior-priest grumps, moving swiftly away from the little terrors. humph

Chauncey stops dancing gradually and blinks twice at Luther. "Were you... were you going to punch me?... I suppose I should be grateful," he says. "Children? Who was the nice grey fellow? Is he friendly?"
