Re: Chapter 2: Pyramid of the Dead

I just realized that Loche has a 10-foot pole. Would he have been able to climb with it, or would he have needed to leave it at the base of the pyramid?

Psst. Arthfael is already atop the pyramid. Biblio is the only one still climbing.

Fyi, there's only one person still ascending: Biblo. :)
Everyone else is at the top:

Arthfael just summited and now needs 10 minutes of rest.
Biblo will summit in 35 minutes, and then need 10 minutes of rest.
The others have rested and recovered from the climb.

Roan, Son of Rune

"I'm with ya," Roan grumbles to the Pict. He quickly takes two torches from off his pack, retrieves flint and steel, and lights both of them. One in each hand, he approaches the entrance to the pyramid, "Watch yerself, Gronda," and drops one of the lighted torches inside.
"Looks to be about a five-foot drop. I'll go first."
Torch in one hand, Roan puts a knife between his teeth and crawls in.

"Efter ye," Loche says, grinning. He watches as the barbarian proceed to enter through the trapdoor, then prepares to follow immediately behind.

Garrin Locke:

"We are stronger as a unit. We should wait. This impetuousness may be our undoing." Garrin continues to gaze down on the Zamoran, hoping he moves quickly before the others disappear too far into the monument.

Day One
The Lost City of the Ancients, Great Eastern Desert, the World of Hyboria
13th day of the month of Yuluk, 1279th year of the Age of Aquilonia
Dusk. Scorching, arid, cloudless

Image

Marooned in the Lost City, deep within the Great Eastern Desert, the starving survivors of the sandstorm-wracked caravan have no choice but to enter the mountainous pyramid tomb of Xuthalhotep in a desperate search for food. Time is running out for most of them.

Halfway up the western face, Biblo slowly toils beneath the exacting deadweight of his beloved possessions.

Image

Far above him, the trapdoor exhales cool air that carries the faint scent of age and something else that can't be placed.

Impatient with hunger, Loche and Roan prepare to enter the portal in the roof of the handmade mountain. They push the hulking man-beast's corpse aside and open the trapdoor slab wide. The scraping sound of stone on stone echoes deeply in the dark below.

Roan the barbarian gets a torch alight and drops it down. They watch it fall down a five foot shaft, the depth of the stone blocks that form this pyramid, and then suddenly out into a magnificent, open chamber!

It keeps plummeting and lands in a massive sand dune and stays lit. Peering down from above, the explorers can't help but wonder how many centuries have passed since torchlight last illuminated these halls.

By the flickering light they see that a ten foot tall sand dune dominates the wondrous, 20 foot high space. It's larger than the dune that seeped down atop it. The monstrous corpse had wedged the trapdoor open; sand from the sandstorm must have blown in.

From their vantage point, the survivors see an unloaded, large crossbow, bolted from the ceiling, pointing up at them. They can see one bronze door set into meticulously carved walls that are lined with titanic, stone idols of human-faced pharaohs out of time without measure.

But they cannot see the entire chamber.

All is silent.

Mystery lurks at the shadow's edge.

DM Notes:
Torch stays lit? (Yes: 1-3): [1d6] = 2

Fyi, You are 15 feet from the top of the dune; a 5 foot shaft and 10 feet of open space.

28 minutes until sunset, and Saves vs. Starvation for most of you.
Arthfael still needs 8 minutes of rest from the climb.
Biblo will summit in 33 minutes, and then need 10 minutes of rest.

Roan, Son of Rune

"Follow me in after I drop," Roan says, taking the knife from his mouth and sheathing it. He pulls the hand axe he took from Thogg and slips into the opening, dropping to the dune below, holding the torch high over his head so as not to extinguish it when he jumps into the dune.

Loche is quick to follow the lead of Roan, but repositions himself to avoid being positioned directly in line with the crossbow's aim while waiting for his turn. Once the barbarian lands safely and clears the landing area, the Pict will drop his 10-foot poll down first, then follow after it. He will collect his dropped pole as soon as he lands himself, and casually begin using it to prod at the sandy piles all around them, hoping to determine the depth of sand coverage, and whether the areas are relatively safe or if any spots might possibly trigger another sinkhole.

"Let's search, bit keep an yak oan that, aye?" he says, indicating the bronze door.

Mako:

Mako drops down next. He looks around and notices the tripped trap. "What is this place?" He calls out to Loche "Be careful with that pole you might set off another trap."

Garrin's attention is divided between the ascending Zamoran and the others as they descend into the monstrous pyramid. He moves over to the trap door and peers below while waiting for Biblo to rejoin the group.

Gronda stays at the hatch, watching both the men below and those still up top.

She speaks to the Atlantean Paladin as they wait together.

These structures are so huge! Who could have built such monuments? Strange forces and magic must have been used. Men alone could not do this.

Or, perhaps it was your gods who helped in their creation, priest!

Garrin Locke:

Garrin cocks his head slightly and regards the strange warrior woman with curiosity. He can tell that she has led a hard life; her scars relay a tale of savagery and abuse. His thoughts momentarily turn to his missing mother and sister.

The Atlantean noble clears his throat of grit and responds, "Nay friend, Lord Mitra had no hand in the design of this monument. My thoughts are that this colossus was constructed under the lash of avarice kings."

Uncertain how to address the Zembabweian native, for she is certainly no lady of the court, he decides to offer her a deep bow and properly introduces himself, "I am called Garrin. First born son of the House of Locke." He straightens and extends his hand to shake.

Gronda! Replies the groups only female. Just Gronda!

She shakes his hand firmly, sensing the goodness in this mans heart.

Garrin Locke:

Garrin likes the warrior woman's candid nature. He offers her a rueful smile, shakes his head, and shrugs, "Aye, 'tis a great shame that I had to abandon most of my mail. I will have to adapt, and Mitra shall shield me from evils."

He continues to converse with her as they wait for Biblo to arrive. "Tell me, Gronda, from where do you hail? Tell me of your people."

Gronda replies.

My people? The homely female looks at the paladin with disgust.

My people enslaved my mother. Because she was a savage. I was born into slavery. Forced to serve my people in ways that would sicken you if I told you of them.

I may be a Zembabwein, but they are NOT and will NEVER be my people!

The woman likes the look of this handsome warrior so she tries to continue their conversation.

You?

Day One
The Lost City of the Ancients, Great Eastern Desert, the World of Hyboria
13th day of the month of Yuluk, 1279th year of the Age of Aquilonia
Dusk. Scorching, arid, cloudless

Image

Biblo grinds upward in sweaty drudgery beneath the uncaring eyes of the animal-headed gods that crown the mountainous monolith to eternity.

Image

High above him, the city dwelling Argosian and the savage hunter of the Black Kingdoms strike up an unlikely friendship, while Arthfael rests to regain his Cimmerian strength.

Wielding axe and torch, Roan the barbarian fearlessly leaps into the trapdoor atop the Great Pyramid and plummets down to the soft dune below! Loche of Pictland follows quickly, with Mako of Khitai behind him.

Leaving behind the sunlit world of Men, the raiders of the lost pyramid fall through space, and time as well, it appears; seemingly journeying back thousands of years in one short plunge.

From atop the great dune, slogging in deep sand, they look around the grand chamber by flickering torchlight.

Image

The highest tier of the pyramid is dominated by this 40 foot square room. Proto-Stygian hieroglyphics adorn every flat surface. There are four bronze doors, one for each cardinal direction, each centered in its own wall among eight tremendous stone colossi of the ancients. Sand embankments cover walls to the height of ten feet in some corners. Shadows hungrily jump and threaten to retake the chamber they had dominion over for countless millennia.

Mako eyes the working crossbow, noting that it's not thousands of years old.

Loche repeatedly impales the giant dune with his long pole. Several feet down, he strikes something hard. Hard as rock. Suddenly, tremors ripple across the island sized mound. An earthquake? No, the dune itself writhes! It's coming to life!

The explorers are separated, riding the shifting sand avalanche down the shuddering sides of the treacherous dune as its top erupts like a volcano! Impossibly, it births twin gigantic claws, each over ten feet in length!

Just as the raiders get clear of it, the sand hill explodes! Towering in its place looms a gargantuan behemoth; a monstrous desert scorpion, over 35 feet long!

Image

A deafening roar detonates from its immense maw! The terrifying reverberation chills their spines, weakens their loins and can be heard as far away as Biblo!

One square = 10 feet. First letter of PCs' first name marks their position.
The trapdoor shaft up to the other PCs is in the center of this chamber's ceiling.

Rolls and Rules (unrequired reading):
Direction? North is 1, then clockwise. Roan: [1d8] = 7, Loche: [1d8] = 4, Mako: [1d8] = 4

No one has the element of surprise. The monster currently has negatives to its Dex, preventing it from having a chance to surprise the PCs.

The soft sand dunes act to halve falling distances, so no damage is taken in either fall.

23 minutes until sunset, and Saves vs. Starvation for most of you.
Arthfael still needs 3 minutes of rest from the climb.
Biblo will summit in 28 minutes, and then need 10 minutes of rest.

Roan, Son of Rune

"Crom's balls!" Roan shouts, staggering in the sand, trying to get his balance while gawping at the huge scorpion. "Some help down here!" he yells as he hurls the hand axe from the dead Cimmerian.
Unfortunately, the shifting sands throw off his aim...
Hand axe: [1d20+2] = 4+2 = 6, [1d6+4] = 6+4 = 10
