SSI AD&D Goldbox Games now on GOG

#1 Post by Coleridge »

Hey guys,

Just heard about this, and thought I'd share. Good Old Games is now carrying the old SSI AD&D Goldbox games. These are by far my favorite computer iteration of the game. Especially cool is the Unlimited Adventures game. A lot of the old paper mods have been converted for play on it. Anyway, hope some of you find this useful.

Yeah, I'm excited about that. I picked them up, but I'm still replaying through the Bard's Tale series before I move on to these.

I keep hoping they'll also eventually rerelease AOL Neverwinter Nights and host a server, but that's just wishful thinking.

I loved the Bard's Tale series. Between those, the Wizardry series and Exodus: Ultima III, I spent a lot of time on the ol' Apple IIe.

On November 2nd I will be participating in another 24 hour game of Dungeons & Dragons as part of Extra Life. This organization uses gaming to help raise money to donate to children's hospitals. I'm raising money for Marshfield Children's Hospital in Marshfield, WI, and all money I raise will go to that hospital. All donations are tax-deductible. Please take a moment to check out my donation page below. Thank you.

I remember the Bard's Tale series fondly. Growing up I spent many late nights on the C64 in the basement.

Wait, that's not stereotypical at all, is it?

Not unless you used the same basement for tabletop D&D as well... umm... ;)

Don't think of yourself as a stereotype! You are a trendsetter!!

Every once in a while I get the idea to trawl the internet for some retrocomputing hardware, but the shipping costs from the US to the UK always end up being prohibitively expensive. So, until then I just have to rely on emulators.

Currently I'm playing the Bard's Tale series on Virtual ][, and lately I've been playing a bunch of text adventures, including this great old Macintosh one called Quarterstaff I hadn't never heard of before.

I also got about 30% through Xyphus before it just got way too difficult to stay alive. I'd like for someone to remake that game with a streamlined control interface. Every command was either a mouse click or a scroll-down menu, no key commands; it took forever to do anything!

The Gold Boxes are next, but I don't know if I'm going to play them with the new GOG releases (I think those are the DOS versions?), on a C64 emulator or on a Macintosh emulator. Too many decisions.

In my opinion, the best iteration of the goldbox games were on the C64. The music is killer. But, you may want to go the GOG route. Unlimited Adventures only came out on PC and Mac, and it opens a whole new world of user generated content. I'm trying to figure out how to get it on my tablet right now.

I personally want to get a C64 myself, but this may be an option if you don't want to emulate any more:

I think they are in Europe, so shipping to you shouldn't be too bad.

Man, that is a cool looking machine. It seems like most people are interested in its Atari and C64 functionality, I can't find much by way of reviews or comments on the Apple II and Sinclair cores. Still, it looks like an awesome piece to have even if those were a bit buggy.

As a side note, http://www.forgottenworld.com is supposed to be a clone of Neverwinter Nights, but I can't tell if it's still up or not. The site says the server is offline, but I can run the program and try to log in. Unfortunately, I can't recall the account I made awhile ago, and when I tried making a new one it never sent me the e-mail confirmation, so my guess is it's dead in the water.

Aw, that's sad. Take a year or two away from playing and all the graphical MUD revival projects go down behind your back! Shadow of Yserbius, NWN, Legends of Future Past; I hope Legends of Kesmai is still up, at least. :(

I believe it went down a while ago AND multiple emulation projects that cropped up since then have all crumbled as well... :(

End of an era.

Tell me about it. At least Project1999, Al'Kabor and the Ultima Online servers seem to be going strong, but I'd really like to see some continued support for the earlier online games.

That being said, you can still technically play Neverwinter Nights by running the offline version, but it obviously lacks the (huge) benefit of having other players, and think you can't save any progress and have to start from the beginning every time you boot. Although, that's probably not a problem if you run it in a DOS emulator and just freeze the state whenever you quit.
