Chapter 16: Beneath the Starless Sky

The Underground City, Beneath the Great Pyramid of Xuthalhotep
Lost City of Khemsa, Forgotten Kingdom of Verulia, Great Eastern Desert, the World of Hyboria
Day Nine. Long after Midnight?, 22nd day of the month of Yuluk, 1279th year of the Age of Aquilonia

Through sorceries impossible, Kiri Khutan of the unknown East suddenly scales the wall with the ease of a giant ant!

He climbs up the long, colossal shaft of the titanic anthill...

...and finally escapes it!

Setting his grapnel at the peak, he throws down the rope to his waiting companions who then pull themselves up. After a strenuous grueling climb, the pilgrims to Pandemonium summit the mound. They reel up the rope, cast it downward outside, and descend the steep anthill slope to freedom!

They recover from their arduous labor and find themselves back in the eerie netherworld of the Underground City, at the edge of the brooding ruins of the ancients. They know not where.

Looming cyclopean megalithic towers dwarf the immense anthill; forlorn, silent and decaying with the ravages of desolate eternities.

High above them hangs the vast darkness of the enormous cavern's rooftop, infested with phosphorescent moss whose cold luminous glow serves as the only constellations that the mad native underdwellers will ever know.

Could they navigate by these lichen stars?

A scattered handful of such ragged, wretched souls stagger aimless as ghosts nearby, wearing naught but masks and loincloths over skeletal forms the color of bleached skulls. Lost in their dreamworlds, they ignore the explorers, walking on through endless night without sun or moon or stars or hope.

Tjoruy croaks ruefully, "Come to the city, ye who wish to live in horror, in forgetfulness, in darkness, and in death."

The adventurers turn and see they are near the labyrinthine ruin's hinterland, at the border of a vast forest of gigantic mushrooms.

The field of towering fungi might have been a farm once. Now it is overgrown and wild from centuries of neglect.

Upon getting his bearings, Tjoruy cries, "The mushrooms! Let us feast, my brothers, in His blessed spaciousness and light!" and lopes toward gargantuan toadstools as high as redwood trunks.

Zahra
Zahra looks around- feeling relief at being out "in the open air" again. She turns to Tjoruy. Do you recognize... she starts, then sees him hurrying toward the giant mushrooms. She sprints after him, and tackles him if she can.

Wait! We're lost in a maze of deathtraps here- we cannot run pell-mell into anything!

Sorry- I have no idea how grappling works, or I'd provide some die rolls. FWIW: Z's movement is 12', her Dex is 15, and her St is 18/62

Mako:

Mako strolls over to the mushroom patch. He picks the same ones Tjoruy does but waits to see the others taste it before he tries.

Amethu is also glad to breath the 'open air' once more. Cautiously, he adds, "Are we certain those are safe to eat?"

Garrin chases after Tjuroy, wondering idly if any denizen of this underworld would choose a giant mushroom patch as its home.

Surely, mushrooms must be harmless, he tells himself. They must be.

Cruloc

Mushrooms as tall as an Eiglophian spruce? Ants of a size to rival a war stallion? Glowing lichen which feebly mocks the stars in the limitless heavens? Truly, the wan rarities of this subterrestrial realm would astound even Munga the Knowing - wisest shaman of his tribe.

Not for the first time on this day - is it even day? - the barbarian senses danger.

"Forsooth, we are the insects here!" rumbles Cruloc. "We are as likely to be eaten as we are to eat."

Xorxen heeds the barbarians words, looking around the area carefully, near and far, for any unseen dangers. He tries to listen over the conversations for any sounds that might carry on the strange blue air here.

Loche

Ne'er thought A'd be happy tae see mushrooms again. The Pict watches to make sure Tjoruy eats the mushrooms before he is convinced they are safe. Only then does he cut into one and begin eating.

Having escaped the vast ant hill and its gargantuan inhabitants, the explorers stand at the border of the grand, monstrous, forlorn Underground City and a wild forest of giant subterranean mushrooms.

Momentarily awakening from his demented reveries, Tjoruy suddenly darts toward the towering fungi in exultation!

Zahra the amazon tries to tackle him but, with a fool's luck, Tjoruy evades her and reaches his goal. With jubilance, he cuts away a piece from a huge, well-hacked trunk and feasts upon this mana of the gods. Tears of joy form dirty rivulets down his face.

As Loche and unseen Mako partake of the underdweller's feast, Amethu asks, "Are we certain those are safe to eat?"

"Yea, brother!" cries Tjoruy with his mouth full. "A vessel shalt endure long years dwelling in the sunless city, given to dreams, wreathed in dreams, consumed by dreams, by drinking of the black lake, and eating of the mushroom forest."

Cruloc remains on guard, urging caution. Xorzen tries to listen for lurking dangers but hears nothing beyond the adventurers' caterwauling.

Tjoruy says to them both, "Come, brother vessels! Attend ye not unto those distant figures—they art but lost and dreaming Verulians. Neither wicked priests nor leper-skinned apes, they shalt not deliver ye unto Zargoth and death. Come! Come and slake thy hollow emptiness by Osorus' divine mercy!"

Kiri looks at first with trepidation at the mushroom forest, then, reassured by Tjoruy's exultations, walks over to sample the bizarre food source himself. He trusts this crazed priest for reasons he cannot himself ascertain.

He then turns his gaze roofward to study the glowing formations, trying to see if he can get a sense of where they are now, versus where they were when they plummeted into the ant-hill. At any rate, he'll make an effort to memorize their arrangement now, for future navigation.

Zahra
Zahra watches the crazed man, worried. Once she sees that he's unharmed, she'll take a small sample of the same fungus and eat.
She's nervous, glancing in all directions- trying to watch a 360-degree perimeter.

Cruloc

Cruloc remembers the force-feeding of mushrooms he endured for purposes unspeakable, and he has no appetite for more despite the hunger gnawing at his belly. Still, he is Cimmerian, which means he is a survivor, and his people do what is necessary to cling to life in the frigid, unforgiving foothills given to them by Crom.

"If this be the providence of Crom, may he choke on some himself!"

Cautiously sniffing a mushroom wedge he carves from a giant stem, he observes the reactions of Kiri, Zahra, and Tjoruy after the three have partaken. Satisfied they have suffered no ill effects and have not drifted into madness, he reluctantly begins to eat.

Mako:

The mushrooms have a brothy taste with a meaty texture. It would be better cooked in a soup than raw he thinks. The sustenance relieves the hunger pangs in his abdomen. Mako picks extra and places it in his pack.

Weel, it tastes lik' jobby, doesn't it? Better than starving tae death- barely. The Pict hacks off a few extra pieces, storing them in his pack.

Xorxen continues to watch their surroundings carefully as he cuts mushroom steaks from the massive mana stalks. He doesn’t eat any of it yet, but secures a weeks worth of the strange food source on his back with the rest of his meager possessions. (sheet adjusted)

He waits a long time before eating, making sure there are no negative effects on the others before he partakes himself, using his trained mind to stave off his hunger pangs for as long as possible.

From under his mask he asks his fellow Osoran, “Where shalt we go from here, deep brother? What other subterranean wonders will thow show us along our important quest?”

Garrin frowns at the large mushrooms. He refrains from eating any now, but cuts off of a few bites for later.

While the others eat, the paladin searches their current surroundings. He doesn't stray far from the group.

Amethu also will not eat the mushroom just yet - unless he has to later when all else has run out.

He also tries to gather from the 'stars' above or the architecture of the ancient ruins where they may be and where next they should go. "If our path is indeed clouded to us, perhaps we need to go up to see where we are to go forward next?"

Amethu and Kiri Khutan look up at the glimmering lichen constellations in the stone cavern sky, searching for a north star to guide them. They cannot find their bearings yet.

Beneath the towering mushrooms, the outland explorers succumb to hunger and join Tjoruy in his fungal feast, all except Amethu, Garrin and Xorzen. Those that partake of the subterranean fare show no ill effects and, after filling their bellies, proceed to fill their packs.

As ever, Garrin the ascetic denies himself the pleasures of the flesh. He scouts the proximate boundary between the toadstool forest and the vast, timeless necropolis. All he finds there is emptiness, decay, madness and ruin.

Amethu wonders aloud whether they should climb one of the desolate towers of the Underground City to get their bearings.

Xorzen asks Tjoruy, “Where shalt we go from here, deep brother? What other subterranean wonders will thou show us along our important quest?”

Tjoruy says, "Ah! Thy important quest! Art thou ready, my brethren? Come, let us journey to the Island of Death."
The ramshackle prophet pulls himself up into a standing position. "His wicked priests need not bear us away. Nay. We shall walk willingly where others are dragged screaming. Let us go before He who is death to the Soul, to the Body, and the Name. Come, let us sail to the Eye of darkness and horror and thus pass from all memory."

Garrin says, so, we travel to an island? If so, we will need a boat. He looks around. Can we fashion one from these mushrooms?
