Migrating Games Here

#1 Post by ffilz »

Over on the odd74 boards there is some discussion about migrating the play by post games here. Since I already run games here, that has some appeal to me, however, I have a question if it would be possible to migrate the threads to here? Otherwise it would be disruptive to ongoing games.

Another possible hurdle would be convincing all my players to follow...

Unfortunately, that would not be possible.

Well, not automatically. It could be accomplished with a lot of copying-and-pasting.

I think some of the Goblinoid Games guys just did a print view, or something like that of their games, and copy and pasted that when they migrated over.
I’m also pretty sure a bunch of the ODD74 guys already have accounts over here. :D
This is a game about killing things and taking their stuff so you can become more powerful in order to kill bigger things and take even better stuff.

Pulpatoon: The whole point of PbP is to take the scheduling pressure off the game. We're just chatty because we're so eager!
Scott308: ...everyone should be reminded of just how wonderful the people they play games with here can be in real life.
Leitz: Quality and quantity wise, I think US is the best I've seen.
Paladin: I can promise terror, glory, and riches...or a quick and brutal death.
Inferno: Come on! That's was Vicar's Head, a completely different doomed village!
Rex: I can move to the wait list to let someone else into the game.

Dave’s plan is a good one though. Especially for the posts you want to maintain the formatting for. If you use the edit function or the PM function, copying that post and pasting it here should work

Theoretically, I'd think would be possible. The posts in a phpBB board are stored in a database, so it would be easy enough for someone with database programming skills to write code that would import the posts. But it could be kind of risky because a bug in the import program might corrupt the database. And you'd need someone to take the time to write the code. And you'd need a way to export the messages from the other forums.

It's likely someone has already written an import module, though. And, sure enough, a quick Google search gives me:

https://www.phpbb.com/community/viewtopic.php?t=2115251
This MOD can be used to import messages (or posts) in a phpBB3 forum from an XML file. Therefore this will allow you to import messages from virtually any forum provided you have been able to save its content in XML.
Of course, that just means it's possible. Whether it's practical is another matter. And there are probably easier and safer ways to save the posts than bringing them over here.

And it's pretty much a moot point, at least one player wouldn't follow...

So right now we have 265 guests visiting. Earlier this month we had a record number of 320.

Is this the odd74 folks, more spam attacks, or something else? Thanks.
