Chapter 11: Curse of the Pharaohs

#1 Post by Inferno »

Chapter 11: Curse of the Pharaohs

Tombs of the Ancients, Fourth Tier of the Great Pyramid
Lost City of Khemsa, Forgotten Kingdom of Verulia, Great Eastern Desert, the World of Hyboria
Day Four. Midday, 16th day of the month of Yuluk, 1279th year of the Age of Aquilonia

Once, in this desolate wasteland of dust and ruins, the Empire of Verulia flourished – ruling the known world for five thousand years. Five thousand years before history was recorded – or five thousand years after history had ceased to be chronicled; for that span of time, reckon it how you will, the Verulian civilization had thrived. Think hopefully of the dreadful past the Earth has known, or else brood upon the future. But if you would believe the unholy truth – then Time is an agony of Now, and so it will always be.

Ravaged by dread Zargoth and the formless terror called Time, Verulia fell and newer nations succeeded her: Cimmeria, Aquilonia, Pictland, Argos, Khitai and Kambuja. Then memory began: Ur, India, China, Egypt, Assyria, Persia, Greece, and Rome – all these came after Verulia. But none dealt in the terrible mysteries, the secret sorceries of old Verulia. None used such power or knew how. And none lasted five thousand years.

In that agony of Now, deep with the Great Pyramid of Verulia, the explorers of antiquity push their way through tight passages between monolithic stone blocks and discover, at last, that for which they have been searching:

The Tomb of Xuthalhotep and Ankhara, and the unimaginable treasures therein which they would wield against Zargoth the Destroyer.

A towering door, covered in ancient hieroglyphics and sealed for five thousand years, is now all that stands between them and their goal.

Amethu, Xorzen and Zahra, living descendants of lost Verulia, can read the portal's dread warning from out of the inconceivable ages:

'Cursed Are They Who Enter This Sacred Tomb and Disturb the Eternal Resting Place of the Great Pharaoh Xuthalhotep.
Pestilence, Suffering and Death Await All Those Who Dare Break Its Seal.'

Mako:

'Cursed Are They Who Enter This Sacred Tomb and Disturb the Eternal Resting Place of the Great Pharaoh Xuthalhotep. Pestilence, Suffering and Death Await All Those Who Dare Break Its Seal.' "They should make a sign and post it out front of this entire pyramid. We have found nothing but death and suffering here. This warning is to be heeded but anyone who makes it this far their fear is surely already lessened after encountering the numerous pitfall to get here." Mako looks around at the walls, ceiling, and floor. "Where will death come this time?"

Xorxen takes the time to study every aspect of this door and its hieroglyphs.

He quietly recites the words of Ghorom again as he does so.

"Forged when the world wast young, they art born of the age of Ancient Khemsa at the height of her glory, in an unrivaled era of magic and myth.
"The sacred lore cites the Eye of Verulia, a magic emerald of properties unknown and perhaps unknowable. Xuthalhotep wast also said to be interred with his magical spear, sword, arrows, shield, dagger, armour, helm, ruling staff, ancient tomes and scrolls of magicks.
"With them, didst mighty Xuthalhotep smite his enemies, and rule an empire."

Finally, after searching for any dangers on the door and doorway itself, he speaks.

"Doth anyone remember anything else about this door? Search thine memories as if thows life shall depend upon it. As likely, it will."

Amethu bends his thought to the door and memory of any information that could be of use here.

Garrin shakes his head. "I can remember naught else. Let us continue. We've come too far, sacrificed too much, lost too many friends, to stop here."

If the others agree, Garrin opens the door.

Zahra

The Amazon paces, her eyes locked on the door. This is a grim curse. But, as I have said before, inscriptions of curses are common here. It probably means very little.

"Pestilence... I don't like the sound of that..." says Kiri. He looks around the door and the walls of the room for any holes which might emit poisonous, disease laden gas or liquid.

Zahra

I have also heard the term used when talking about swarms of insects. More of those horrible Crawlers would be a dangerous thing.

Tomb of Xuthalhotep, Fourth Tier of the Great Pyramid
Lost City of Khemsa, Forgotten Kingdom of Verulia, Great Eastern Desert, the World of Hyboria
Day Four. Midday, 16th day of the month of Yuluk, 1279th year of the Age of Aquilonia

The hieroglyphs on the aeons-old monolithic door proclaim:

'Cursed Are They Who Enter This Sacred Tomb and Disturb the Eternal Resting Place of the Great Pharaoh Xuthalhotep.
Pestilence, Suffering and Death Await All Those Who Dare Break Its Seal.'

The explorers search doors, walls, floors and their memories, and find nothing.

Garrin, son of Atlantis moves to open the door and suddenly Mako, angry at the endless death and suffering wrought upon them ever since they found the lost city in the trackless wastes of the great desert, implores patience that they might live where so many others have died.

Loche and Xorzen expertly scan the immense portal for more lurking deathtraps of the ancients. They find none.

Torch in hand, Garrin steps forward, defying the curse, and pushes open the door to the crypt of Xuthalhotep!

The tomb is unsealed and they behold a sight not seen by any man for five millennia!

Within is a magnificent chamber filled with treasures! Two golden sarcophagi are honored in central positions of reverence, exaltation and triumph, surrounded by gold coins, jewelry, gems, weapons, books, furniture and more than can be taken in by their weary senses.

The fabled lost treasure of Xuthalhotep is found! At last, the explorers have accomplished their quest!

Zahra
On a hunch, Zahra concentrates hard, forcing herself to see the room as empty.

"Loche, Xorzen, once more, if you please," says Garrin. He does not enter until the treasure room has been cleared of traps.

Once everyone gets a look inside the open portal, the masked monk gets to work.

Without actually entering the tomb, because of the warning and all, Xorxen examines the opening as best he can form outside of the newly found room.

Amethu waits to be certain that no traps are present in the tomb. He can barely control his desire to enter the wondrous tomb to see it's splendors for himself...

“Too easy,” says Kiri. He also doesn’t trust the suddenly revealed hoard. “There’s got to be a trap.” He examines the doorframe for signs of a locking mechanism or portcullis waiting to trap them should they rush in.

At long last, after much suffering and toil borne by the resolute explorers of the Great Pyramid, the fabled lost treasure of Xuthalhotep is theirs for the taking!

The disbelieving adventurers await the imminent curse about to befall them all. Amethu, Garrin and Mako hold their positions until confirming that their path is safe. Amethu can hardly keep himself back from the wondrous chamber of incalculable riches.

Kiri, Loche and Xorzen search for hidden dangers without entering the tomb. Their painstaking labor bears no fruit.

Pale Zahra the amazon cannot believe her red eyes. She blinks and shakes her head but the golden vision before her remains unchanged.

Then Loche dares go where the others fear to tread. He sets foot into the treasure vault of the ancient pharaoh and is not instantly struck dead by the vengeful wrath of the Verulian gods of old. The Pict thief risks another slow, cautious step toward a mound of ancient gold coins nearly as big as he, and begins to laugh with gleeful, wanton greed.

Zahra

Zahra moves into the chamber, slowly, anticipating a painful death at each step. She raises her torch as high as possible to spread the light. Are there any torches or lamps in the room?

Kiri will proceed cautiously into the treasure room, 20 feet or so behind Loche, stepping where the thief steps, as best he can. “Dibs on the shield...” he says absently as he carefully picks his way along.

Garrin enters the room as well. He ignores the gems and gold. He looks specifically for armor, helms, shields, and swords.
