Sharky's Hole.

#1 Post by OGRE MAGE »

As Sam commands the hobbit army, telling them to prevent anything else from being poured into the holes, Pip makes his move inside the door. The rest of the group simultaneously gasps in horror, but aren't really all that surprised at the move.

Farmer Cotton isn't too far behind the lad, so he follows the inquisitive Pip inside and checks for his tracks. When he gets to the door, he sees the little rascal standing in the center of the reception room. He is stone still and seems to be staring at the only thing in the room. It is a small plant stand with a spherical object on top of it. The sphere is covered with a dark cloth that Pip is currently in the process of removing.

Merry thinks of the destruction that he and Pip witnessed at Isengard. He, Frodo, and Sam quickly make their way to the door to see if Pippin is dead yet. Hob can also see Pippin through the window as the black cloth is being removed.

Pip's action this round is to.......look. Why does he always have to look? :D Everyone else can do whatever they like.

Pip, NOOO!! Merry dashes in and tries to re-cover the orb without gazing at it himself. There you GO again, always looking! You just can't not look!

Hob's eyes dart to Merry as that hobbit dashes forward to save to save his companion from foolishness. What terrible burglars these would make. Hob stays at the window, waiting for others to get to the entrance.

Frodo warily looks around/behind to make sure that Pip and Merry haven't attracted any unwanted attention.

Sam: "Is that one of them looking-glass things? What'd you call them? Palan-deers? What do you say we put it in a sack and drop down the the goop hole out there?"

Pippin, fool of a Took:

Without turning from its powerful allure, Pippin said distantly, "Merry, I just want to look at it. ...Just one more time."

Sam: "Whatever we do with it, let's get it away from Pip. I've... we've seen things that call to folks like that, haven't we, Mister Frodo?"

Sam takes off his jacket and throws it over the already-covered globe, and attempts to haul it out of there.

Yes we have, Sam. And they can be a conduit of evil, agrees Frodo

And suck away what little sense some had to begin with, mutters Hob.

He comes inside to examine the back of the room with the entrance.

Pippin can't help but look.....

As he pulls the cloth off, he sees that this globe isn't quite the same as the one he remembers. It's glass is clear, not dark and ominous like the dreaded Palantir. A small dark spot in the very center begins to grow as Merry rushes in and covers it again.

Pip wants to look again when Sam comes in and tosses his jacket over the thing for good measure. Frodo keeps watch but sees only the barren wasteland that once was his yard. Hob enters and takes a closer look at the tunnel at the back of the hobbit hole. It is large, perfectly round, and quite dark. It leads downward with an exaggerated pitch into the back of the hill. There is an obvious disturbance in the dusty floor showing a distinct path from the tunnel to the door.

If no one other than Pippin objects, Sam carries the wrapped sphere out of the home and drops it down the goop-hole.

Pippin feels bad. And guilty. Again.

"I can't help it!" Pippin exclaims with shame.

He hangs his head and, while looking down, notices the footprint trail in the dust. Chastened, he meekly follows it to the open maw of the tunnel, where he stops in amazement and listens down its black throat.

Pulp, Cotton raised a good point about a palantir festering beneath the Shire for all eternity.

My impression was that the palantirs weren't inherently corrupting, like the Ring. It was just if you had someone nasty on the other end of the line. But, probably not worth the risk.

Sam holds up the wrapped bundle. "Before we head down there, anybody know a safe place for me to stash this, away from... prying eyes."

If no good ideas are forthcoming, he'll stick it in his backpack, and keep an extra eye on Pippin.

Bring it along, Merry agrees with Sam. This one is... Different, not so dark. Besides, if we take it, none of our foes will be able to use it.

Frodo says, I'm not sure what the risk is, but Merry is right: we need to keep it away from our foes regardless.

How often is splitting up a good idea?, says Hob quietly. I can go first and sneak ahead to scout.

Hob is right, we should stay together as long as we are able. That means no wandering off, Pip! scolds Frodo. Perhaps we should follow where old man Sackville-Baggins went. In the meantime, hide that thing, Sam. I wish we could throw it in Mount Doom, but for now, let's just keep it under wraps!
