10. Return to Castle Ravenloft

#1 Post by Zhym »

Date: Trieluna 13, 1222
Time: 1:50 PM
Weather: Fog
Location: On the Way to Castle Ravenloft
**************************************

Having rested, recovered spells, and split the spoils of the zombie corpses of those who launched the previous unsuccessful expedition against Strahd, you set out for Castle Ravenloft. Each of you hopes or prays that you will be victorious where so many others have failed.

You leave Castran and Bragar's hideout and head west down the Old Svalich Road. Even in the mid-afternoon, the dense fog that constantly hangs over this land is still present. A bite in the air tells you that although it may be early spring, winter has not yet released its chilly grip. "How does anything grow here when the sun never seems to break through the fog and clouds?" wonders Shinyah aloud.

The few townspeople you see in the street hurry away into their houses to hide behind barred doors. A pair of gypsies laugh and offer you mock salutes as you pass by.

Half an hour out of the hideout, you cross the river Ivlis. Its surface is diffuse with the soft patter of the light rain. Past the bridge, the road turns from broken stone to dirt, crowded on both sides by the thick Svalich woods. Raindrops mix with mud and the remains of rotting leaves to form a thick, squelching glop that sucks at your boots. You pull your cloaks about you and trudge onward, the *sqluck* *sqluck* of your boots sucking against the muddy road and the occasional howl of a wolf the only sounds you can hear.

You eventually come to the fork in the road where Bragar and Castran turned north to meet with Madam Eva. You turn south, where the road gradually descends into tall grassland. The path is still muddy, but at least the mud is untainted by stinking, rotting leaves.

The road turns west then northwest to the bottom of the towering cliffs. It follows the base of the cliff, steadily climbing up a foothill, turns west around a spur of the cliffs, then rises to another cliff wall. There, the road ascends steeply along the sheer cliff face. You begin the slow trek up the side of the cliffs. The climb is strenuous and you are buffeted by winds and stung by drizzling rain, but after about an hour of climbing you safely reach the top.

At the top of the cliffs, you find yourselves surrounded by the craggy Balinok peaks. The muddy road wends around one of these peaks. About half a mile after you had reached the top of the cliffs, you cross a bridge over a high, thin waterfall that crashes to the valley floor far below. Once again you continue down the disused road, followed by the big bears, mud sucking at your boots.

You come to a place where the road splits in two. The dirt road continues to the northwest while a wide road leads west into the heart of the dense forest. Patches of cobblestone show through the west road, telling that this was once a great road. You follow the road northeast.

After passing through the craggy peaks of the Balinoks, the road takes a sudden turn to the east and the startling, awesome presence of Ravenloft itself towers before you.

Please ignore the carriage. It wasn't waiting for you this time.
You stand at the edge of a a 50-foot-wide precipice that gapes between the Balinok cliffs and the walls of Ravenloft, a chasm of dizzying depth that disappears into the fog-shrouded distance far below. The lowered drawbridge of old, wet, shorn-up wood beams hangs precariously between you and the arched entrance to the courtyard. The chains of the drawbridge creak in the wind, their rust-eaten iron straining with the weight. On the near side of the chasm, on either side of the drawbridge, stand twin guardhouses of turreted stone, broken from years of use and exposure. Across the chasm are the outer walls of the castle. From atop the high strong walls stone gargoyles seem to stare at you from their hollow sockets and grin hideously. A rotting wooden portcullis, green with growth, hangs open in the entry tunnel. Beyond lies the entry courtyard. The doors of the keep stand closed.

You have made it unmolested to the boundaries of the castle. It is early evening. The last of the diffuse and feeble lights of gray Barovian day have faded into twilight. Night will soon be upon you.

Agax Gryyg, game mage:

The merry frivolity was gone from the dreaming wizard's face. Agax regarded the open drawbridge and his voice, low and full of ominous portent, said unhappily, "How kind. It would seem we are invited."

He looked down his long white beard at the gnome and the dwarf, "Have we any points of entry, my friends, other than the front door?"
Zhym, great post!
Are we actually being followed by big wolves, or was that a typo for Shinyah's bears? Thanks.

Whoops! The wolves were left over from the previous posts from which I adapted (i.e., mostly copied & pasted) this narrative. The previous party met some wolves on the way who merely followed the party as it made its way to the castle. I've updated the post.

Gragog looks unimpressed by the castle though he does keep a keen eye on the gargoyles "Front door doesn't look so inviting and you mentioned a green slim I'd not trust that passage. The gargoyles too look rather ominous I'm well aware that such things can be living and attack folk best to avoid them as well I'd assume. So what other passages do you know of if any?"

The castle stands on a peak that is 50' across a chasm from where you stand. Unless you have some other means of crossing the chasm, the only ways to get to the castle appear to be the drawbridge in front of you and through the front gate or over the 90'-high walls.

"The gates were closed when we left, and so we flew over them to escape. I believe such slimy things react to vibrations, perhaps if we could throw something heavy under the gates it might cause some to dislodge and this we could travel under it safely. We escaped via a back doorway which I think we can lead you all to and perhaps enter that way. It is around the other side of the castle through some portcullis, as yet unseen from this vantage." the gnome whispers breathlessly

Lar comments, "Aren't we trying to get to the Catacombs? All be it we probably have to cross the drawbridge to get to them but shouldn't we try to get to them first? I would be very alert from here on too. Lead on."

Lar stays alert and ready with sword and shield ready.

"Wait before we cross this bridge, one previous adventurer got surprised when a slimy ceiling fell on him. Not so us, let me try to clear our path".

Scarlett carries 4 juggling cudgels, oiled for flame and uses them go intrigue and entertain the crowd, a remnant of her rogueish ways. So she will light them and crossing the drawbridge throw them in turn at the greeny slimy stuff on the portcullis. She is hoping any slime will react by shifting away from the flame and part like the waters of the red sea to provide a dry passage through the gatehouse. " It may give us a small window of opportunity to run through unmolested."

Scarlett crosses the drawbridge, which creaks and groans as walks on it, to the edge of the entry gate. Tossing her cudgels at the green growth on the roof of the tunnel, she is able to burn it all away.

i can't believe we have come here without all being fully healed. We may as well just jump from the castle bridge and be done with it.

Castran, once it is deemed all burnt, will sneak across the drawbridge carefully, unseen.

Agax Gryyg, game mage:

In the midst of a promising conversation of an alternate, more secret entrance, Agax is surprised that some of the party charge the waiting maw of the open gate in a frontal assault.
"Oh well. I guess we could do that too," he mutters, pulling up the hood of his Elven Cloak.

Then he speaks words from another universe, that of the enigmatic Gamers of Urth, to summon powerful magic onto himself. "Zhym! GreyWulf! Stormm! Stirling! Dram! Cweandroooo!"
Casts Detect Invisible.

Empowered with mystic vision, the unseen seer will cross the bridge behind the others, scanning for hidden dangers.

Come back in off the ledge! :D
Dram is on vacation and Bragar the Cleric is being NPC'ed by Zhym. That's how it slipped through the cracks.
Zhym, if Bragar didn't heal the party on the long journey here, Agax could have. Thoughts? Thanks. :)

Gragog readies his spear and follows the others not saying a word and keeping his eyes out for enemies making sure to check overhead as they cross the bridge. Also wary of the gargoyles as he checks remembering to check that those have not yet moved either.

Castran crosses the drawbridge after Scarlett. You can hear the boards of the drawbridge creak in sequence as the invisible gnome makes his way across. Agax, who seems to believe himself invisible, incants a spell to allow him to see that which cannot be seen. Castran appears in his vision as a shimmering ghost. Agax follows him across the bridge. The rest of you do likewise. The drawbridge groans and complains with every step, but its boards hold. You reach the entrance tunnel, which Scarlett has cleared of slime.

Agax Gryyg, game mage:

The dreaming wizard ignores the groaning and the complaining of the drawbridge and advances across it with the others. Then he scans the immediate area with his piercing sight, looking for the invisible, hidden, ethereal, or out of phase, informing the party immediately of any findings. Then, he will weave another interdimensional spell to heal Petyr's wounds. "Cook! Moldvay! Carr! Gygax! Niles! Hickman!"
