Gagel laughs. "You want to sacrifice me to this blob? Nah, I will have to decline, if it's fire it fears then I know where to get it!", Gagel attempts to run for the book and throwing it in the pit that burned him to a crisp.

If the efforts of the others fail, Wulfhart will activate his water ring and attempted to bludgeon the inky abomination.

Swilbosh will attempt to burn the book with his torch but keep out of the way of the others who are tearing around.

Inked! - Round 3
Image
As Groyn runs toward book, the dwarf feels his leg tingling from where he was hit by the ink. He suddenly stumbles as his left leg turns into a stick figure! It can't support his weight. Groyn crawls toward the book, intent on shutting it. He's almost there.

Asherrion the Gray also feels his body changing. The elf strikes the monster squarely with his scorpian tale. He is disappointed when the stinger seems to have very little effect. Then the elf is transformed into a puddle of sentient, moving ink!

Sleestak the two-dimensional shaman pleads with the adventurers: "Use water to dissolve the ink, and fire to burn the book." The flat lizardman advances on the monster with his holy symbol in one hand and an herb in the other. The creature seems oblivious.

Wulfhart twists his magic ring and is again transformed into warrior of water. Fists of fluid fly at the black mass, but the inky abomination evades Wulfart's firehose of fury.

Image

Gagel, resplendent in oddly curved and jutting armor, clunks over to the book on the altar. His left stick-figure arm cannot support the arm armor, which hangs limply at the shoulder. He wades through the inky mass swirling and coalescing about the room. The thief grabs at the book but seems to miss the altar together. Was he directionally turned about blackness? He sees the altar two feet to his left.

Swillbosh the lizardman fighter fares better, rushing the book and bringing his torch down upon its pages. It begins to ignite. The ink monster swirls vigorously in agitated fashion, attacking those who most threaten it: Swillbosh, Niles, Wulfhart and Groyn. The inky tendrils hit Niles and Groyn (please Save vs. magic.)

Fingal the thief entreats Niles to give guidance on the battle. The young knight, following Swillbosh's successful example, lights his torch and charges the half-conceived horror of ink. The flame seers the liquid, producing a strange smell, as the monster recoils! From the magic missiles of Asherrion and Wrenly, and the torch blows of Swillbosh and Niles, the creature does seem smaller than it did before.

With Porphyry standing by to help, Wrenly the evoker suppresses creeping hysteria and draws a mouth and eyes on his blank face. Miraculously it works! He takes in a deep breath and opens sticky eyes to see the battle before him.

Actions for Round 4!
Image
-Initiative: Monsters [1d6] = 2, Party [1d6] = 6 Party wins.
- Gagel's roll was a miss for the book. You came very close.
- Groyn's leg slowed him down, but he's right near the book in round 4.
- Ink attack on Swillbosh, Niles, Wulfhart and Groyn [1d20] = 3, [1d20] = 14, [1d20] = 4, [1d20] = 18 Niles and Groyn hit, please Save vs. Magic.
- Wrenly's idea wasn't the official solution, but I just had to go with it

That was awesome!

Fingal shakes his head in disbelief.

Ones trying to burn it, ones trying to get it wet, another is finger painting! What the heck'r we doin here?

The thief has no idea what to do. He has no torch so he can't help burn it and his blades do it no harm.

He does something that he is sure won't help but he's always wanted to try. He pulls out his magic dice and crouches down. He lightly rolls them out in front of him on the floor.

Seven come eleven baby!

Sleestak, lizardman shaman:

Sleestak's impassive, non-judgmental skull mask obscured a face that was neither. The reptilian shaman had little dealings with mammalians and for that he was thankful. In all his decades of life, he had never seen lizardmen shrink from battle as their brethren fought for their lives. He heard human cities bred such men. They were called "politicians."

The shaman returned to the matter at claw. Surprised that he could navigate three-dimensional space in this diminished condition, he continued his advance on the bestial blot, closing with it. Turning to show his "thin" side, to create a smaller target, Sleestak uncorked his flat waterskin and sprayed two-dimensional water onto the ink demon, careful not to extinguish the burning book of foul, forbidden knowledge.

"It's weakening," he rasped. "Don't let up."

Porphyry winces as the book burns. Shaking his head in resignation, he looks around for anything flammable with which he might join in the attack on the ink-creature.

Gagel shakes his head over and over again, "What just happen? I am not sure but let's give this another try!", he goes for the book again depending on his armor for protection.

Wrenly the Brown, MU

Wrenly gasps for air and blinks. The world has suddenly gone strange. His painted eyes are sending him images, but the images are hollow, somehow, as if the objects and people relayed were two-dimentional images layered on top of one another, like the undulating waves on a stage set. It's bizzare, yet not entirely unpleasant. "I am frankly astounded my desperate plan worked," he thinks.
Yaaay!
"Unfortunately, sirs, it seems I have failed to prepare any further offensive magics for the day. Still, all may not be lost. Fight ink with fire, as they say..." His voice seems strange, as if he were speaking through a metal tube or from an adjacent room. As he speaks he calmly pulls out a torch and lights it.

Seeing that fire appears to be working, even Wulfhart is sophisticated enough to realize that water could be a liability. Instead, he interposes himself between Wrenly and the inky beast to protect the mage from further damage. He will use his shield to parry any attacks.

"Lighting one now, sir," says wrenly as he strikes flint and tinder to light the torch propped between his knees.
Yes! Al Columbia. I figured his stuff would be suitably creepy...

Inked! - Round 4
Image

The swirling ink creature squiggles savagely, spraying dotted lines at those most threatening the book: Swillbosh, Gagel, Groyn and Niles. It only manages to hit Niles (please Save vs. spell.)

Niles, who was just inked prior by the monster, turns jet black but otherwise is unharmed. The knight struggles against the new impact from the dotted lines. He sweeps his torch through the ink monster, again searing it!

Sleestak the two-dimensional lizardman shaman sprays his waterskin at the inky horror. The two-dimensional water sprays do hit the monster, and water being water even if it lacks depth, the ink monster thins out where it was splashed.

Asherrion the elf, now a mass of black ink, floods forward and splash attacks the ink monster. He is absorbed into the ink creature and gains a horrible mind-wrecking awareness of its psyche (please make a Sanity Check 4d6 check of your Int. and Wis. averaged together.)

Image

Swillbosh the lizardman fighter continues to burn the book. Groyn the dwarf agonizingly crawls to the altar, his left stick-figure leg unable to support him. He grabs the altar, hauls himself up, and slams shut the now-burning book. His hand smarts from the flames (1 HP damage.)

Gagel the thief, struggling too with a stick-figure appendage of his left arm, lunges for the book. He grabs the burning book just a second after Groyn slams it shut! Gagel feels the heat through his armored hand; very soon he will burn.

Wrenly the Drawing, protected by the burly barbarian Wulfhart, lights a torch to use against the inky terror. The torch and its flame are a black-and-white drawing, not penned with the greatest of skill. The magic-user isn't even sure he can feel heat coming from the flames.

Porphyry the satyr looks about for flammable material to light and use. He lacks a cloak himself. Other than the cloaks of some others, there is nothing immediately handy. The other adventurers do not offer up extra torches or flammables.

Fingal the thief rolls his magic dice. Perhaps his luck will rub off on the others.

As the book continues to burn, now in Gagel's right hand, the ink monster is shrinking.

Actions for Round 5!
- Initiative: Monsters [1d6] = 4, Party [1d6] = 1 Monster wins.
- Ink monster attack on Swill, Gagel, Groyn, Niles [1d20] = 10, [1d20] = 4, [1d20] = 4, [1d20] = 19 only Niles hit.
- Niles succesful Save for last round resulted in just being blacked. This round's Save applies to the dotted lines attack.
- Sleestak water damage [1d6] = 2
- Groyn book flame damage on hand [1d2] = 1 1 to Groyn.

Wulfhart can't bear to stay out of the fight. He turns to Wrenly. "Stay safe and out of that ink monster's way!" He pulls a torch out of his pack and lights it. If he has time, he will attack the ink blob with it.

Sleestak, lizardman shaman:

The vile book was burning, the ink demon was diminishing, and the old lizard-shaman's waterskin was empty.

If Gagel doesn't successfully throw the accursed tome into the flaming pit that roasted him, Sleestak will do so, carrying it and dropping it in, not trusting his two-dimensional senses to accurately throw the book in three-dimensional space.

If Gagel throws the book in the pit, and the ink demon still lives, then Sleestak will use the ink splatters that coat the area to draw an ocean of water on the floor, walls and/or altar near the ink demon to attempt to deluge it, dilute it, and dissolve it.
