OOC Discussion II: The Return
Re: OOC Discussion II: The Return
My character has the spell Detect Traps. But I believe you also want a cleric to turn the undead also. He does not have that power. He gave up the power to turn to use edged weapons.

I was younger and more foolish then.
Next game I run will probably be straight 1e with no UA. I just like "basic Advanced" better.

Actually, I was thinking it was pretty clever of you to remove the ability of our highest level cleric to Turn Undead while at Castle Ravenloft.Zhym wrote:I was younger and more foolish then.

Re: OOC Discussion II: The Return
Turn Undead didn't always work in the first party anyways.

Re: OOC Discussion II: The Return
IS it possible to do standard operating procedures (SOP) for certain event? For example. Doors. Assuming we know Scarlett can do so.
The standard procedure might be.
Scarlett scans the door and surrounding floor/walls and door for traps as she approaches. If none found she listens at the door. If no sound she checks for traps on the door and if none are found she checks for a lock. If none found she lets the front rank open the door. IF any traps are spotted she tells the others to move back around a corner or 40 ft. Attempts to disarm the trap or traps. Once traps are potentially dealt with and locks are dealt with or noise is addressed. Scarlett will open the door so only one person deals with any trap not disabled.
IF we are going to beat Strahd shouldn't we do things the best way? Assuming this is the best way? Thought? This would also move the game along in case our busy lives delay a posting here or there. I'm not sure this is desirable or preferred. Just thinking out loud.
Lar might have SOP Detect evil on if humanoid creatures encountered and relay to the party his findings. Attack evil creatures or assist the party to in formation in all encounters.
Something like that?

Re: OOC Discussion II: The Return
I have no problem with an SOP for opening doors if those responsible for each action are okay with it (i.e., we'd need Stirling's okay for Scarlett to check every door and try to disarm any detected traps before opening it). It would speed things up in real time, as you say. In game time, things might slow down a little if every door gets the listen-check treatment, but not by lots.
OTOH, the paladin's Detect Evil skill isn't something that can be "on." He'd have to stop for a full round and concentrate on detecting evil in one direction. Also, keep in mind that not all evils register to Detect Evil.
In general, I think SOP is more useful for routines: checking and opening doors, mapping/searching rooms, etc. Encounters with creatures would be handled case by case.

Re: OOC Discussion II: The Return
Guys, please read the updates carefully. I know I'm long-winded, but we've had quite a few player posts recently that make it look like you haven't been reading. Also, I often put clues in my posts that you'll miss if you don't read carefully.
Thanks.
Thanks.

Re: OOC Discussion II: The Return
As a hopefully helpful hint, there's a button in the pages to view new, unread, or your posts that takes you to the first new post:
If you click the little page icon circled in green and marked 1, it'll take you to the first new post. If instead you click the little page icon circled in red and marked 2, you'll go to the last post (and possibly miss previous posts). If you just go to the last page of the thread, you might miss some posts.- GreyWolfVT

Unseen Servant is full of little surprises.
Re: OOC Discussion II: The Return
Thanks for the info. I didn't know those tips either. I will work on my reading skills also. )
Re: OOC Discussion II: The Return
In the interest of staving off disappointment should you try what you seem to be planning: a stake is not an effective melee weapon. To pound a stake into a vampire's heart, the vampire must already be immobile.
Think old-school vampire films, not Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

using stakes on vampires...'staving off disappointment' pun intended?

Re: OOC Discussion II: The Return
any old school vampire film I've ever seen was a stake through the heart. Buffy did it to mobile vampires more than immobile found in the coffin types like I recall from the older films.

Once the spell is cast, the cleric is free to use his hands and will still see traps for the rest of the spell's duration.Dram wrote:I will have to read the spell when I get home to see if both hands are needed to keep spell going. If not he will have his Mace ready.

Re: OOC Discussion II: The Return
FWIW, the rear of the group is still in the previous room. You have a large party (for now ) and the bears take up a 5x10 chunk of space each. So Scarlett can be at the rear of the group or she can concentrate on the shadows and the cots but she can't do both.Stirling wrote:Scarlett will remain by the door, bringing up the rear of the group. She will concentrate on the shadows and the cots. Are they cots like baby ones or small campfire wooden beds?
And the cots are full-sized.
