Cruloc

"I am the apostle of corpses!" Cruloc howls, his longsword clanging uselessly off a Thracian's helmet.

Risking attack from the devils surrounding him, Kiri will charge forward and leap to the base of the statue. If he makes it, then summoning all his strength, he'll attempt to push it from its plinth, directly onto the aspect of Thanatos itself.

Zahra edited repost
Agile as the Lion Goddess herself, Zahra dodges through the attackers to face Thanatos himself. She raises her sword and pauses a moment.

Your minions attacked us, and laid their "curse". I reject your curse, and your power. Life and Light are the way!

The Caverns of Thracia, Pictland, the World of Hyboria
Day Twelve. Late Afternoon? 22nd day of the month of Qrot, 1280th year of the Age of Aquilonia

Image

All hope is lost. Death and darkness descend upon the invaders of Thracia.

With ferocious fatalism, Torix and Zahra fight their fear and charge the bone-chilling avatar of Thanatos!

They survive the gauntlet of dead men's blades (10hp damage to Torix, 3hp damage to Zahra) but their sword and spear pass harmlessly through the spectral apparition, and crash into the stone wall behind it in a flare of sparks!

Overwhelmed by unliving adversaries, Cruloc cannot cleanly heft his Thracian blade! He cries out but his words go unheeded.

Then gigantic Kiri charges like a bull, hoping to topple the ominous statue whose unveiling seemingly caused the dead to rise!

Image

But before the mystic mountain can attempt his desperate gambit, he is cut down and falls hard, with all the wind and half the life beaten out of him! (17hp damage!)

Then the deathless warriors of eternity close in, and steel clashes against steel!

Image

Torix is nearly impaled from behind (6hp damage)! Cruloc's ribs are gashed (2hp damage)! And poor Gnasher is brutally hacked asunder (4hp damage)!

Then the angel of Death (Th) gazes upon Zahra! Its skeletal hand gently touches her pale cheek and she feels her soul being drained away! (Lose 1 level, and 2 from maximum hit points)

Cruloc

“And lo, channeling the formidable power of his mother, the Mountain Queen, manifested in the form of an avalanche to mate with Urdum, his bear father, Yef defeated the Beast of Ben Morgh and cast forever the shadow of fear from the land of Cimmeria.”

Munga the Knowing smiled warmly at the boys - four of them, who had gathered in his hut on this grey morning to warm themselves by his fire and listen to him recount yet another wondrous tale of Yef’s exploits. As was customary, the youths cleaned their teeth with reeds while he spoke, for he was not only the repository of the tribe’s oral history but also the chief teacher of runes, curatives, and basic hygiene. One youngster, who he had ever regarded as dull, was not picking bits of root vegetable from between his molars as the others were, but instead - brow knotted and deep in thought - he was absent-mindedly wrapping his straw around a forefinger which had turned the purplish colour of a garrotted Vanirman scout.

“Cruloc. If your teeth rot and fall out of your head, how do you expect to bite the ears off a goat on the occasion of your eleventh birthday?”

The boy winced. The concept of eleven still made his head hurt. Imagining more fingers than were attached to your hands seemed absurd. Blinking furiously until the metaphysical confusion abated, he recovered and doubtfully looked at the elder sitting across the crackling fire.

“Master, how could a bear have mated with an avalanche?” he asked, his blue eyes wide and alight with semi-intelligence.

The other boys froze, bits of straw hanging from their cracked lips, silently speculating at the severity of the coming beating. No one had ever posed such a question to Munga, and its audacity and incisiveness unsettled him. The wise man’s gaze met Cruloc’s. Perhaps he had underestimated the boy who had not hitherto displayed any indication of having an inquisitive mind.

“Did they kiss first?”

“No, my son," Munga shook his head staidly. "Urdum beheld the terrible Mountain Queen in her passion thundering down the scree-covered slope toward him, a churning riot of dust and bracken-filled hair, her massive boulders bouncing and swallowing the tall pines which stood before them. As the men of our land know well, when lust overcomes a Cimmerian woman and she charges, he must protect himself, crouch, look for an opening, and plunge forward. The Great Bear, having previously mated and survived, used this knowledge to his advantage. When a woman storms you like a screeching blue Pict, you too will know what to do.” The sage stopped to check the boy’s understanding, nodding with each word.

“Drop. Look. Lunge.” Cruloc intoned.

“Just so.”
_________________________

Like Urdum, Cruloc is surrounded in a choking avalanche of bone - a fray like nothing he has experienced before! The barbarian’s journey to the Lost City has brought him to the brink of madness and the edge of death. Crom spit the will to fight and survive into his guts when he was still in the womb. The red mist of rage rises in his chest, and suddenly, he drops, and with a last and desperate surge of strength – plunges forward between the clattering femurs which separate him from the fallen gypsy priest. Sword-calloused fingers and battle-seasoned sinews stretch to the breaking point as he reaches desperately for the occult wand of bone.

“The apostle of corpses, I am called!” the barbarian bellows above the din, holding the macabre artifact tightly to his chest. “In the name of Cr- Thanatos, stay your weapons!”

Torix sees his spear pass harmlessly through the apparition of the god Thanatos and despairs. Perhaps Kiri was right, and toppling the statue will end this hopeless fight? He wends his way through the skeletal soldiers and tries to push the image from its plinth.

The Caverns of Thracia, Pictland, the World of Hyboria
Day Twelve. Late Afternoon? 22nd day of the month of Qrot, 1280th year of the Age of Aquilonia

Image

In a crypt of unnatural darkness where mortal feet have not tread for millennia, a spectral horror that is a threat to sanity looms over a phalanx of the dead and the intruders they seek to slaughter!

Convinced that death is upon them, the last of the doomed adventurers make a final attempt to save their lives!

Zahra, the pale, masked amazon, steps back from the avatar of Thanatos and, no longer needing to defend itself, the angel of death is content to patiently await the inevitable.

At the edge of the creeping darkness, Cruloc the Cimmerian desperately charges for the macabre skull scepter!

Image

Against every instinct of his superstitious, barbarian mind, he dares seize the unholy relic and cries out, “In the name of Cr- Thanatos, stay your weapons!”

But it has no effect!

Knowing the end is here, Torix makes a volcanic lunge at the fearsome statue beside him! (X1)

Image

The same statue which, when unveiled by Grigor, seemingly caused the dead to rise!

The Pict savage slams into the unholy icon with all his primitive ferocity and just manages to topple the towering figure!

It crashes to the stones, shattering! The gale force wind returns in a sudden blast! And with it, all the living dead instantly fall to the ground lifeless!

Image

With the invaders' souls no longer in imminent threat of death, the spectre of Thanatos is suddenly gone! The aspect of Zahra's life essence that was prematurely harvested returns. (Gain 1 level, and 2 to maximum hit points)

The tempest-blown tomb is a killing field of fleshless Thracian cadavers and, lying among them, Amethu, Dahinna, Grigor and Kiri continue to bleed out.

Torix pants to catch is breath in the howling wind. He says, Kiri, you have a good head to think of knocking down the evil statue. But Kiri doesn't answer. The Pict rushes over to his prone form, takes leaves from his herbs pouch, chews them, and applies them to the fighting mage's worst wound.
Barbarian first aid. Do we have a light source, now that the wind is back?

Dahinna

Something has happened.
Dahinna is no longer warm. Instead, her body is cooling, her lifeblood pouring out upon the ancient stone of the tomb of Thanatos. Her legs twitch a bit...or maybe that is just what her mind tells her as darkness looms in the distance. She seems drawn to it...
Winter is coming...

Cruloc

The tenebrous chamber, moments before a scene of utter chaos, falls silent. One of the several piles of bones which litter the stone floor begins to move. A hand appears, then a shoulder, and finally, a dusty figure rises! Does the angel of death again threaten our battered heroes? No! It is Cruloc - revenant of the North! Blood stripes his entire form, and he is bent, hunched forward like a dusty survivor of some hellish natural disaster!

"Set's sunless realm!" he exclaims, recoiling and dropping the wand from his grasp. He rubs his palms vigorously together, attempting to scour its foul traces from his skin.

Gathering his senses, and taking note of the life-saving help Torix is administering to Kiri, he gropes his way southward in search of the fallen Verulian magus.

The Caverns of Thracia, Pictland, the World of Hyboria
Day Twelve. Late Afternoon? 22nd day of the month of Qrot, 1280th year of the Age of Aquilonia

Image

In the lightless domain of the dead, the explorers of Thracia have survived the harrowing onslaught of revenants by the skin of their teeth.

Surrounded by suddenly lifeless bones and skulls, they staunch the flow of blood from their companions, saving their lives with minutes to spare.

A grim, unavoidable realization sets in. This Underworld of the Ancient Age is beyond them. Twice this day they've just narrowly averted a final, complete slaughter.

Their quest unfulfilled, it will take days to heal and recover from this massacre... days where they will be weak and vulnerable in this merciless realm of ancient and deadly peril.

Their lives and their quest now hang by a thread.

Cruloc

"We must remain here among the dead and rest in the glow of your accursed weapons," Cruloc declares. "This gale will not permit a fire."

He tends his wounds and those of the others in the meagre light. When time permits, he searches the chamber for valuables. If the chamber has only one exit, he will lock it and suggest they make camp here at least until the wounded awaken. Cruloc will also retrieve the torch he placed near the door.

Torix renders first aid to the all of the others one by one, including to the Cimmerian Cruloc and himself. He drinks from his waterskin and eats pounded venison and berries jerky from his pack. Need food? he asks those who are conscious.
I'm not sure if Torix has time to do all of that before DM moves time forward. 3 days food left for Torix.

Zahra
Zahra will contribute first aid, food, and water. After that, she'll begin clearing remains from the SW corner of this room, intending to make a campsite.
Eventually, she intends to have a cleared area to rest in, with all the skeletal remains in the room stacked in a rough wall around it.

The Caverns of Thracia, Pictland, the World of Hyboria
Day Twelve. Late Afternoon? 22nd day of the month of Qrot, 1280th year of the Age of Aquilonia

Image

Surrounded by the dead and the darkness, those that now belong to Thanatos rest and recover among the corpses of his faithful servants.

Zahra the amazon builds a low wall of human skulls and bones to shelter against an icy wind from Hell that does not relent. The nameless dread that has haunted Torix and Zahra since entering this necromantic realm does not relent either.

Cruloc and Torix administer to their fallen companions with barbaric treatments. But some are beyond help.

In the night, Grigor and Kiri die of their grievous wounds. Cruloc is on watch and half-glimpses the shade of Thanatos come to collect their immortal souls.

Image

And then He is gone, along with the lives of their friends. Grandfather is powerless to stop it.

After three days and three nights in this twilight netherworld of eternal darkness and death, Amethu and Dahinna return from the "dead," ravenous.

Seven dared enter this mythic Underworld of the Ancient Age. Now only five still draw breath.

Torix consumes the last of his rations. He hadn't intended to be in this place, known to the Picts but taboo to them, this long. He says in his rudimentary Common, Cruloc is right. We need food. Torches. Go up and hunt?

Dahinna

The rogue of Zamora awakens in pain, aching all over, and starving!
"Gods above and below, but I could eat a horse!" she exclaims with a grunt, rolling over and getting to her knees. Removing her pack, Dahinna devours a set of rations, trying to chew slowly. Between bites she asks about what happened.
"All I remember...is charging into a room of dead...then I was warm and then I was cold...how did we escape the specter of Thanatos?"
