ChatGPT

#1 Post by ToniXX »

This isn't really an RPG topic but I'm curious what you all think of ChatGPT? In case you haven't heard about it, check it out here:
https://chat.openai.com/chat

It is a natural language interpreter and it will reply with natural language responses. I asked it (a month ago) to summarize the history of D&D and while it got a good portion of it correct, it messed up on dates and didn't think that 2nd edition should be separate from first. I've asked it other questions, trying to go pretty deep, and most of the time, the responses are fluffy and very high-level.

But, one thing it does quite well is write code. You can ask it, in plain English, to write something in some language, and in my experience it does it really well and quite efficiently.

So, how can this new AI help with RPG stuff? I don't think it could write whole adventures or even summarize a scenario without a lot of input by a sentient human first. Does anyone have any other thoughts about it???

I think it is very topic dependent. I have read a few articles on it and it seems to struggle in certain areas. In one they asked it over 100 question about the US Supreme Court and it only got about 40% correct. In another it focused on chemistry questions and it did better with basic high school level questions but flunked questions that a chemistry major would be expected to know. I could see it helping with RPG related stuff like using different languages to represent certain languages in your game. But fact checking for historical type information I would tend to at least double check.

I don't know how many parts he's up to now, but I found this really fascinating!

Using ChatGPT AI to write a Dungeons and Dragons adventure module Part 1 (25:56)

Edit:
Actually, here is the playlist where his current (and presumably future) videos on the topic will be added:

It's impressive.

As Rex said, it seems to be struggling with facts. Perhaps its knowledge is internet-based.

There are programs already that can randomly generate and stock dungeons. I think in time AI could be taught game rules and be able to write full D&D modules. I think the oldschool location-based modules that I prefer (as opposed to railroad-stories) should be easier for it to handle? You could choose PC level, monster types, location types (dungeon, castle, cave, etc), even adventure style (sword and sorcery, horror, high fantasy, etc). Another AI program could create all the art for it.

So it’ll put you computer-y guys out of work before social workers? Ok then. ;)

Is this the same function (or whatever) that’s been putting out the crazy AI art?

Oops. Inferno already noted AI art. Some of that stuff is freaky and good in an alien sorta way. A lot of it is terrible though.

I think its best and most reliable value right now is simply to be the super duper ultimate random table generator. Give it some parameters and it will spit out some good random ideas for awhile. Use it too much and you will probably begin to spot the patterns (but then changing up your prompt language might help steer it back into unpredictable directions).

I'm going to try this. Been playing with Midjourney and see the benefits of AI-derived inspiration.

I’ll come back and add screenshots later when I’m not on my phone, but I thought this was interesting:

So, I asked ChatGPT to play a game of #dnd with me. It was all going remarkably well, when we hit a problem...

Still, I do see lots of potential here. Especially for solo play.

I don't know much about it really just I know we had to block it here at the schools because students are using them to do their work for them. So plagiarism = bad and this chatGPT is on the naughty list here in the schools. Beyond that I have not had any real interaction with it. I only just started goofing around with these AI art sites where you give a text prompt and it tries to create it in some sort of art form. AI does intrigue me. I think it probably has potential to be good once it gets a bit more fine tuned based on other replies here.
