Chapter 31: On the Trail of The Ripper

Image

Blackchapel, Hookhill, Gran March, Greyhawk
Day One. Night. Saturday, December 24th, 576 CY
Cold, overcast

Image

Image

In the wretched slums of Blackchapel, the doomed heroes make a startling discovery as to when the Hookhill Ripper strikes, and urgently take to the streets to hunt the unspeakable fiend tonight!

It is a cold restless night in that forsaken district of crumbling tenements, narrow streets and seedy taverns, a place that reeks of death, decay and hopelessness.

Image

Their unwitting bait, a fallen young woman, looks back and finds none calling her. She presses on alone into the night.

Taking their lives into their hands, the heroes separate and follow her at a distance, as a bitter wind cuts through them.

The lateness of the hour and the frigid cold challenges their pitiful stalking horse (M) to ply her heartbreaking trade. She wanders drunkenly through the winding warren of Devil's Acre, forsaken and forgotten...

Faron and Mouser follow the abject, tragic girl from a distance, losing sight of her at each twisting turn of the labyrinthine alleys, and finding her again.

At a crossroad, they see three crones huddled around a burn barrel in a filthy alley (C1-3). Swaddled in layers of grimy rags, they mutter, "Eye of newt and toe of frog, wool of bat..."

They see Faron and Mouser in their flame-reflecting eyes, and beckon them closer.

"Don't be shy, loves. Want to know your future?"

Actions?!

Ingrid and Telkis follow Faron and Mouser at length, often losing them, and having lost Bo and Ajax somewhere behind them in the fathomless depths of the strange city.

The priestess and the gnome come to a corner and see a once-beautiful young woman sitting, leaning in a dark dirty doorway (W1). She is holding her stomach, and her chest and lap are covered in blood-laced vomit.

Image

Eyes wide open, motionless face locked in a rictus of agony, they cannot tell whether she is dead or alive.

Actions?!

Somewhere behind Ingrid and Telkis, Urdur slows Jerome on his urgent vigil, to the paladin's righteous outrage. "Shall we just let another poor lost soul be slaughtered for the sake of caution? This is a time for heroes, not cowards!"

In the dark alley, they find leaning against a brick wall, the large, scarred man from the Cross Keys who spoke to Faron and Mouser in the impenetrable dialect of the slums. (BD)

"Oi. Name's Bold Dell. I'm mates with your mates. Looking for the Ripper? Watsit worth then?"

Mouser knows that his future is damned. He doesn't need some old hag to tell him that. "Faron, leave them - let's keep on the heals of that poor girl."

Ingrid Esthof

Seeing the young woman sitting in the doorway, Ingrid approaches. Kneeling down in front of her, the cleric reaches out, gently grasping the woman's shoulder. Hello, my dear. I'm Ingrid, cleric of Tritherion. Are you...are you hurt? Unwell? What can I do to be of assistance, she asks, trying to sooth the young woman with her soft, comforting voice.

"Careful, Ingrid..." says Telkis

He hangs back a bit, anxious to help, but fearful of disease or a curse of some sort. Anyway, he's confident Ingrid knows what she's doing - and her god will protect her, won't it? He doesn't really understand these intense religious relationships. Garl had always felt so casual in comparison...

Faron
Mouser, you're a wiser man than me and I should pay attention to your advice. But I'm a sucker for fortune tellers, card readers, palm readers, that kind of thing. I'll be quick. He approaches the crones. Good evening, misses. I'll hear my future, if it's not too dear and if you can be quick about it. I don't have much time at all.

Jerome
Jerome is full of righteous fury by this point. His hand tightens around the hilt of his blade. It's worth your.... He catches himself before he can say any more. His tone still teeters on the edge of fury, but he maintains his courtesy- somehow.*Ahem* We cannot offer any coin, sir, but we can offer the intentions of ending the threat to the women of this place. What can you, as a concerned citizen, tell us? The sarcasm in his voice is thick enough to cut with a butcher knife.

With one final glance around the alley to make sure no else can see them, Urdur makes a mystic invocation.

He then says to Bold Dell, You want to tell us, your good friends, everything you know about the ripper, and about this town. You don't want any money from us, since we are such good friends.

Casts Hypnotism on Bold Dell.

Blackchapel, Hookhill, Gran March, Greyhawk
Day One. Night. Saturday, December 24th, 576 CY
Cold, overcast

Image

In the deadly streets of Devil's Acre, three hags beckon Faron and Mouser. "Don't be shy, loves. Want to know your future?"

Faron cannot resist. As Mouser watches, Faron approaches the witches.

"Gaze into the fire, child. Your fate will be revealed!" one of the crones cackles as she adds more ingredients to the blaze and suddenly...

Image

The burn barrel erupts with a bright flash!

(Please roll a CON check on 1d20+4 for Faron, and 1d20 for Mouser, or be blinded! Regardless of the outcome, please post actions!)

Actions?!

As Telkis keeps back, Ingrid kneels down before the girl covered in bloody vomit and holding her stomach. The priestess sees no wounds; perhaps she's been food poisoned.

Ingrid touches her shoulder and she falls over dead! Suddenly, from beneath her long skirts issues forth a plague of large, bloated rats that had been devouring the dead woman's legs to the bone!

Image

The blood-soaked, frightened vermin swarm Ingrid and Telkis, screeching and biting in a feral frenzy!

Actions?!

"Oi. Name's Bold Dell. I'm mates with your mates. Looking for the Ripper? Watsit worth then?"

Jerome snarls a reply as Urdur glances over his shoulder to discover they are not alone! Bold Dell is a distraction for two slum ruffians that skulk behind them in ambush!

Before Jerome and Urdur can act, they are stabbed in the back by the insidious cutthroats!

Image

(8hp damage each! Both please Save vs Poison and, regardless of the outcome, please post actions!)

Bold Dell smiles to show all his rotten teeth. "Give us all your money, mate, if you want to live."

Faron tries and fails to avert his eyes as the hags' fire explodes in his face. He hesitates just a moment, then draws his glowing long sword and strikes at the position of the last-seen crone. He didn't want a fight, but blinded, doing nothing would leave him helpless and at the hags' mercy.
Constitution 12 [1d20+4]=3+4=7 I assume that fails and Faron is blinded. If not, he'll withdraw rather than attacking.

Ingrid Esthof

Panicking as the rats swarm over them, Ingrid utters the words to the first spell that leaps to her mind. To an outside observer, it would appear as if a sudden rainstorm centered upon her, dumping 20 gallons of water on themselves in an attempt to wash the rats away.
She cast Create Water.

Save vs poison (14) [1d20+1]=20+1=21 W00t!

Wincing in pain, Urdur rolls away from his attacker. He casts a spell that he hopes will save his life, and Jerome's. He weaves an incantation, attempting a ruse.

Friends, flee this place! The constables are nearly upon us! You should drop you weapons, coins, and contraband! We'll meet you at the hideout tomorrow night!

"Gggggeeeeehhh!" shouts Telkis, reflexively stepping backwards. There's a faint whistling hum as he draws Cranach from his belt and flourishes it above his head.

He then does what what comes naturally and starts frantically swatting rats, aiming for the ones nearest Ingrid first.

Blackchapel, Hookhill, Gran March, Greyhawk
Day One. Night. Saturday, December 24th, 576 CY
Cold, overcast

Image

In the back alleys of Blackchapel, witches cackle at Faron and Mouser as their cauldron erupts!

Mouser is blinded by the fiery flash!

Faron closes his eyes in time, and when he opens them the crones are silently advancing upon him! Suddenly, they realize he can see and they stop in their tracks.

Faron backs up as one hag screeches, "The divining flames are ready, my dearies! Five gold... for your fortune to be told!"

Suddenly, the night is pierced by the harrowing screams of a woman, from somewhere to the west!

Actions?!

Image

A bloodcurdling plague of rats scurries and squirms out from beneath the dead girl, directly at Ingrid and Telkis!

Cranach smashes one rat to death and then the feral swarm is upon Telkis and Ingrid in a frenzy of biting and squealing! (1hp and 4hp damage respectively)

Her flesh crawling with revulsion, Ingrid miraculously summons a flash flood! In the instant deluge, the half-drowned rats scatter in confusion and bewilderment!

Suddenly, the night is pierced by the piteous screams of a woman, from somewhere to the west!

Actions?!

Image

Bold Dell smiles to show all his rotten teeth. "Give us all your money, mate, if you want to live."

Desperate, Urdur tries to mesmerize the cutthroats, before it's too late! "Friends, flee this place! The constables are nearly upon us!"

"The mutton shunters! Shake it!" grunt two backstabbing ruffians as they flee into the shadows! (R1, R2) Instinctively, Jerome turns and cuts one down with his merciless sword! (R1)

In the wake of the slaughter, they realize Bold Dell is gone!

Suddenly, the night is pierced by the distant screams of a woman, from somewhere to the north!

After a quick count, Urdur realizes he and Jerome are not alone. Not wanting to be exposed to another attack from a hidden rogue, Urdur begins an incantation that will render him unseen.

Casts Invisibility on self.

Once he is unseen, Urdur addresses Jerome. Jerome, that scoundrel is still here somewhere.
We must find him!

If Bold Dell does not appear, Urdur searches the alley for him, as quietly as he can.
