Zahra
Zahra holds her place. She'll wait until everyone else has gone through the doors before she follows.

Re: Chapter 17: The Island of Death
The Island of Death, The Underground City, Beneath the Great Pyramid of Xuthalhotep
Lost City of Khemsa, Forgotten Kingdom of Verulia, Great Eastern Desert, the World of Hyboria
Day Ten. Afternoon?, 23rd day of the month of Yuluk, 1279th year of the Age of Aquilonia
Long buried racial memories of ancient, elder horrors threaten to overwhelm Cruloc and Zahra, chilling them to the bone! "Devour us it will!" cries the barbarian in primal terror.
For one reckless moment, the fearless, ornery Pict considers standing against the gelatinous leviathan!
The frantic counsel of his friends makes him reconsider.
Suddenly, the door slams shut of its own volition! Mako's spectral voice reminds Loche of their deadly encounters with what must have been the unholy spawn of this formless leviathan; each but a fraction of its inconceivable scale!
Amethu, Loche and Mako plunge headlong down the steep stone steps! Garrin meets them at the bottom, steel bared! Frozen with queasy fear, Tjoruy croaks, "...madness.... madness and death!..."
Xorzen races to the stone door etched with the ominous, sanity-shattering pictoglyphs and hears nothing beyond it over the frenzied shouting!
The towering double doors atop the twin staircase are consumed by an eerie, otherworldly light!
The portal trembles for but an instant.
And then it bursts asunder as the vast slime-thing writhes forth!
Actions?!

Loche
"Ah well if we don't want to baste the bastard with some cooking oil I say we show it some greased lightening!"
Retreating from the bottom steps, the rogue makes for the door to the eastern room, pushing aside the door and rock placed by Xorzen.

"There is no glory to be had battling this swallower of souls! Only death!" Momentarily regarding the skeletons suspended in its translucent form, Cruloc adds, "... and a clean set of bones."

Re: Chapter 17: The Island of Death
Unwilling to be left behind, Xorxen sprints across the room to the opposite door and follows the others inside.
"Is there any hope that we will find a spot where that thing cant ooze into behind us?"
The quick moving human waits inside the door, hoping to close it again after everyone has entered the room.

"Tekeli-li! Tekeli-li!"
The towering wall of glistening, sentient ooze mouthlessly screams as it slithers forward! Its immense, amorphous shape pushes through the sundered portal and down the twin stairs, subsuming the giant centipede corpses into its incalculable mass!
The explorers flee for their lives from the glowing gelatinous behemoth!
Horrifically, its vast, protoplasmic surface forms and un-forms limbs, faces and organs in a frightful mockery of the explorers' physiognomy!
"Tekeli-li! Tekeli-li!" it thunders, nigh to deafening!
The desperate men lunge into the eastern chamber and slam the door shut on the roiling amoebic avalanche that cascades behind them!
Their torchlight overcomes the sickly green pall of the chamber's luminous fungal blight, but the stench of festering decay is thick. Beyond pools of standing water, strange globes of mottled brown huddle against the walls, bound in rusting chains. Steps descend to a stone door devoid of the madness-inducing hieroglyphs.
Then suddenly, the dozen mysterious spheres all change, opening up like colossal, otherworldly eyes that glare at the breathless intruders!
Their piercing, penetrating gaze is hypnotic... beguiling!
Actions?! (Everyone except Mako, please Save vs Spells on 1d20 to act. Wisdom modifiers apply. And so does Garrin's +2 Protection From Evil, for everyone.)

Re: Chapter 17: The Island of Death
Loche
The savage rogue looks death in the Eye, unblinking, unphased. The beguiling browns fail to mesmerise him and halt his steps like a rabbit in torchlight.
Loche looks death in the Eye. Spells vs 15 [1d20] = 16
"Blue eyes and a pretty face always caught my fancy. Though mine are often black and bloodshot .... like yours now."
He unsheathes the unfamiliar and cumbersome longsword and tries to drive it through the pupil of the beast.
Loche draws blade and stabs Eye [1d20-2] = 13-2 = 11 [1d8+1] = 2+1 = 3

Cruloc
Save versus Spells [1d20+2] = 6+2 = 8
Cruloc and the others burst into the chamber barely in time to avoid being absorbed by the gargantuan amoebic tide! Their fleet-footed escape has denied the ravenous cube an easy meal!
The fetor of the place assaults the Cimmerian's wildborn senses, and his head swims. "Gah! As luck would have it, we have found the latrine! Whose colossal arse ejected these brown bal..."
As one of the queer alien eyes opens and its gaze meets his, the barbarian stops mid-sentence, and he is benumbed. His grip loosens on his weapon, his jaw slackens, and a tendril of drool begins to extend from his stubbled chin.

Once met, he can do little in his mind to avert his gaze.

Quietly Mako comes up behind Garrin. He places his hand on the Paladin and assists him with a gentle push towards the stairs on the far side away from the gaze of the eyes.

Gigantic, nightmare eyes awaken, mesmerizing the explorers of the Island of Death! Cruloc, Garrin and Xorzen stand agape, spellbound in their dreadful thrall!
Mako's invisible hands guide Garrin eastward and when they reach the stone steps, the noble son of Atlantis regains control of his senses!
Then with blades of steel and bludgeons of wood and iron, Amethu, Loche, Tjoruy and Zahra each brutally put out one of the heinous eyes!
"Fell and terrible vessel, holding naught but madness and the abyss!" cries Tjoruy. "Oft have I dreamt of thee... Thou art the eyes of Zargoth!"
Suddenly, the hold over Cruloc is broken! The savage barbarian is released from the beguilement of the eerie oculi!
Then, against his every effort of will, Xorzen grips his javelin and drives it into Tjoruy's back, impaling his own sect-brother! The spearhead bursts out the priest's abdomen in a crimson vomit of blood and gore!
The surviving baleful eyes glare forth, re-exerting their malevolent, alien will!
Actions?! (Everyone except Garrin and Mako, please Save vs Spells on 1d20 to act. Wisdom modifiers apply. Garrin's +2 Protection From Evil only applies to Zahra.)

Twists his blade in the demonic iris and pulls the gore soaked blade out intent on savaging another but his faltering steps and glazed teary eyed look show his mind is engaged elsewhere.

Mako:
"Wait here Garrin and keep your eyes up the stairs. Call the others to retreat and pray they mirror your words. I will aid those unable to heed your call."
Mako moves back into the room and gently takes hold of Cruloc. "Worry not warrior. It is only I, Mako. Do not resist. I will guide you to safety."
Like he did with Garrin, Mako leads Cruloc to the stairs.
