The Island of Death, The Underground City, Beneath the Great Pyramid of Xuthalhotep
Lost City of Khemsa, Forgotten Kingdom of Verulia, Great Eastern Desert, the World of Hyboria
Day Ten. Afternoon?, 23rd day of the month of Yuluk, 1279th year of the Age of Aquilonia

Image

Betrayed even in death by hideous necromancy, Zargoth's most faithful servitors are thralls to His cruel will for all eternity.

Beneath their pale and luminous burial shrouds, all the dead pontiffs of the cult of Zargoth - whether their flesh is grey and rotten, or dried and mummified, or entirely gone from their ghastly living skeletons - all are infested with a heinous plague of eyes.

Image

The adventurers beat back their ferocious assault, except Cruloc. Cold dead hands hammer the barbarian with a glancing blow (2hp damage). But at the point of impact, Cruloc's skin burns like fire!

In desperation, the adventurers lunge forward in a fierce counterattack!

Loche the Pict twists to aid Zahra, slashing a dead, leathery hand that reaches for the amazon! His jeweled dagger, enchanted against the undead, severs the eye-infested appendage at the wrist! And Zahra finishes the ghastly, mummified curate with a second merciless thrust of her glowing javelin! (W5)

Garrin strikes a fell-handed blow that would have killed two men, but his bloodless assailant does not fall! (W4)

Suddenly Xorzen remembers the unholy symbol he recovered from the dead priest of Zargoth aboard the Ship of the Damned. Finding it among his gear, he holds forth the profane icon!

"Return to your graves!" the disciple of Osorus commands in Verulian!

Miraculously, the dead high priests of Zargoth turn their countless eyes toward Xorzen and shriek balefully as they are driven back to their unhallowed tombs!

The battle is ended. But where Cruloc and Zahra were touched, their skin tingles and itches and burns!

Loche

Impales the severed hand and stares at it intrigued for a moment.

"It has a necrotic touch. But not a ghoulish one. The poison did not paralyse. Some undead pass on a wasting disease. Could the gore and pus on these fingers carry such or does the tingle and burn effect come from the negative otherwordly energy that electrifies the living cells?"

He is impressed with his own speculating before tossing the hand into the sarcophagus from whence it came.

"You should wash the burns in some alcohol. It might disinfect the blisters. But don't touch me. Just to be on the safe side." he advises the wounded pair.

He follows Xorzen through the next room.

Cruloc

If his mind were clear, Cruloc would only have a slightly less foggy notion of what the Pict was on about. Rather, he is aghast at the insidious, painful itching which has overtaken his senses. What trollop's crotchrot infects his arm so?!

"Gah! Munga the Knowing would know what medicine to spit on this!" he states, scowling. "Who has alcohol? Hand it over so that I may cleanse and bind the wound!"

Irritated in mind and in body, he bounds after the long-winded Pict.

Amethu will examine the burning wounds without touching them. If it appears to be a type of poison, he will use his remaining slow poison spell on Zahra - both if possible.

"We should destroy these unholy beasts while they sleep - they could easily rise up again against us..."

Zahra
Zahra twists her neck to try and look at the infested spot. She uses a generous amount of water to wash it clean, and glances around to see if anyone has wine to offer for washing wounds.
She will be heading toward the doorway with Xorzen.

Xorxen looks surprised once all of the monsters return to their crypts, storing the valuable trinket back into his tunic without looking at it.

He ushers the others into the room he discovered before taking out the 4 remaining bandages and green powder he found in the snake hole earlier. He hands one of them to Cruloc and another to Zahra, urging them to use it on their new wounds.

"Even if it doesn't cure the.......itch, you could each use some healing all the same."

"It might not hurt for any who are injured to do the same thing, by the graces of our healers, before we venture any further in this place. It seems there will be trouble in every room we find."

The dead may rise again, says Garrin. We should ensure that they suffer the true death before moving on.

If the others agree, Garrin warily approaches the sarcophagi holding the living dead, sword and shield ready.

"Have you never heard the phrase 'let sleeping dogs lie'? If you attack while they have returned to rest under divine unction, they may not be so obedient next time to submit."

The thief counsels against disturbing the dead again.

The necrotic high priests of Zargoth are driven back to their blasphemous crypts!

The adventurers flee deeper into the ancient ruins whose loathsome geometry seemingly violates all natural law. Within an empty chamber, they catch their breath in a moment's respite from unrelenting danger. (New Experience Point Award is here.)

Cruloc and Zahra itch interminably where they were touched by the blessed of Zargoth. Their skin is red and warm and feels as if something crawls and bores just below the surface! The blistering slowly spreads up their arms!

Loche shares grim theories. Amethu cannot tell if the warriors are afflicted by a poison. Xorzen proffers the bandages and healing poultices he discovered.

Cruloc scratches and Zahra pours water on her skin.

Suddenly, horrifically, the blisters open and ghastly, inhuman eyes peer up through the splits in the flesh!

Loche

The spreading necrotic disease is a real eye opener for the savage, though mercifully not literally at this point.

The drastic morphology needs a drastic response ... and quickly.

"Like I said, to be sure, just don't touch me. Know we can resolve this the easy way or the hard way. Your choice. But to stop the spread and infection we need to hurt you before it consumes us.

Now if you will so kind as to stretch forth the offending limbs ...."

He readies his sword above his head as if to swing an executioners axe.

"We can amputate the arm or try a lesser evil. Cover the limb in oil and burn the disease away. Hopefully the immolation will go deep enough under the skin to crisp the touch of death and in time you may recover ... more or less. "

He sounds pragmatically cut-throatish, though that would be a third option. Unfortunately the Pict lacks the wisdom to discern a healthier choice.

Zahra
Zahra lets out a very un-warrior-like shriek of fear, scrabbling at the eyes sprouting from her arm. She grabs for the bandages and poultices Xorzen offers, rubbing the powder onto her still- wet skin. She whispers prayers to her goddess, begging for salvation.

Cruloc

AAEEGHH!

As the eyes of Xargoth blink open along his powerful forearm and Cruloc meets their soulless gaze, vague, ancestral fears come to senses-shattering life in his mind!

Deranged, the Cimmerian briefly considers Loche's offer to lop off the limb, but quickly thinks better of it.

In a spasm of loathing, he fumbles to ape Zahra, desperately pouring the curative powder over the horridly afflicted area.

It will be several days more before Mitra will grant me the grace to cure such afflictions, unworthy as I am, says Garrin. It would likely be unwise to wait that long. Painful though it will be, we may have to try burning the afflicted area. What say you?

If the diseased members if the party agree, Garrin volunteers to do the deed with oil and torch. He is ready to Lay Hands to heal the burns after.

Xorxen's eyes widen behind his mask at the horror while he backs slowly away from the pair of afflicted warriors.

The monk keeps an eye out around the rest of the room while the powder is applied, in case any more threats suddenly show themselves.

Cruloc and Zahra shriek in revulsion as the heinous plague infests their flesh! The malevolent, living eyes scan all around with ominous intelligence!

Some companions stand back to guard against the hideous infection. Others grimly ready fire, oil and steel to amputate the blighted limbs!

Amethu anoints Cruloc with a blessed ward of Uthoth to shelter him from poison, to no avail.

The afflicted warriors frantically apply the last of the emerald poultices, to miraculous effect! The ghastly eyes close, and the fiery itching of accursed flesh lessens beneath the ensorcelled bandages! (+8hp each)

Loche

Impressed by the healing power over the evil eye infection, the savage drops the stone he was using to sharpen an extra keen edge on his sword.

There is a door or archway in the north wall of the room, he progresses that way.

Are we still in danger of the giant rats or have they disappeared?
