Chapter 18: Kingdom Come

#1 Post by Inferno »

Chapter 18: Kingdom Come

The Island of Death, The Underground City, Beneath the Great Pyramid of Xuthalhotep
Lost City of Khemsa, Forgotten Kingdom of Verulia, Great Eastern Desert, the World of Hyboria
Day Ten. Midday, 23rd day of the month of Yuluk, 1279th year of the Age of Aquilonia

High above the Island of Death, beyond the Great Pyramid of Xuthalhotep, the unseen sun reaches its cosmic apex and is eclipsed by the moon, plunging day into night. The celestial omen heralds catastrophe and destruction to a realm intimately familiar with both.

Far below, the explorers of the nightmarish underworld, their lives and sanity still intact, find no lurking dangers in the door or the pool. Mako renders Xorzen unseen and they pass safely through the mysterious portal. The adventurers carefully traverse a long stone tunnel of carved, leering demon faces. The otherworldly chanting grows louder with every step. Ahead, the ominous tunnel mouth looms cold and stark, the color of the lichen constellations in the cavern roof.

Amethu douses his lantern and Zahra covers her spearhead as they reach a vast courtyard, surrounded by the temple of loathsome geometry, open to the subterranean sky.

Image

Here, the earth itself is warped by something not of this world.

Here, there is a sacrificial pit.

Here stand more faceless men (F4-F7) in varied stages of surrendering their identities to Zargoth.

Image

Masked priests (P2, P3) gibber and chant a blasphemous mass, led by a bare-faced priestess (P1) in a frightful state of becoming something entirely other.

Image

Her pale comely arms and delicate hands are ridden with a plague of ghastly leering eyes. They ready a sacrificial victim to feed to the pit; a young woman (W1) whose skin and hair are white as the moon.

The high priestess of Zargoth - of ruin and madness and death - intones forbidden syllables, slowly reaching a hellish crescendo.

Loche

Whispers his suggestion, (posted in ooc thread).

He sharpens his blade as decisions are made. He would be quite happy to chance sneaking up on the closest faceless guard and sneak attack him regardless of which plan is enacted.

Loche

Describes his plan and then leaves it for others to action or prepare something else. Keeping to the right hand side shadows he will wait until the group pass the F-6 faceless and then at an opportune time as whatever corporate signal to attack is given, strikes the man from behind.

Loche longsword attack backstab attempt [1d20+5] = 8+5 = 13 damage [1d8+1] = 1+1 = 2 treble successful damage

Mako:

"Eyes all over him you say. You all right with that Garrin? It isn't going to offend your god, is it?"
Mako looks ahead. "I have to concentrate really hard as the illusion moves with you. My invisible protection will disappear once the words are spoken; leaving me vulnerable. Let us move up to just outside of their light source (assuming 60 feet) before I cast my spell. Caution though Paladin, don't take many steps past the first priest as my illusion will be at its end."

Cruloc

"I hate magic - as much as it hates me!" rumbles Cruloc. "Save your parlour tricks for the slatterns and puffed-up popinjays of your Eastern homeland. Crom sneers at wizards and their deceptions!"

The barbarian stifles his superstitious dread, masks it with aggression, and retreats from Mako and the others. He brusquely flips his hood over his muscled neck and greasy mane of black hair. "This is all the concealment I need. Verily, it won't be on me long before I begin piling their heads at my feet, by Crom's good eye!"

Amehtu will follow in with the group as directed. He'll cast charm person on F8 after the other illusions are in place so as not to disrupt their intent.

Zahra
Zahra strains her eyes- is the sacrificial victim someone she knows? Or 'just' another albino Verulian?

Xorxen picks up a few stones off the ground in case he needs a distraction, whispering his thoughts to the others, since they can no longer see the monk.

"I will simply walk in among their ranks unseen. I will attempt to get beyond their group, behind the priests, so we may come at them from 2 sides."

Garrin steps forward with the illusion in place, walking slowly toward the cultists. He parlays with the priest in the Common tongue.

I think this answers the questions from the OOC thread.

Lost City of Khemsa, Forgotten Kingdom of Verulia, Great Eastern Desert, the World of Hyboria
Day Ten. Midday, 23rd day of the month of Yuluk, 1279th year of the Age of Aquilonia

Image

The ominous courtyard of the otherworldly temple is as warped and twisted as the faceless horrors that gibber there in unholy worship in a night without ending.

In tense whispers, the adventurers lay their ambush. The ghastly ululations of the Chosen of Zargoth slowly climb toward their spinetingling climax. Suddenly, Mako appears out of thin air! He casts an incantation that was ancient when Atlantis sank, and a plague of leering eyes seemingly infects Garrin's flesh!

Image

Then, as Loche and Xorzen steal around from the side, and Mako maintains his fierce concentration, the rest of the explorers willingly advance toward the sacrificial pit of Zargoth!

From behind her lioness mask, Zahra doesn't recognize the pale human sacrifice (W1) as one of her amazon sisterhood. The young woman's heavy-lidded crimson eyes see the adventurers and something blossoms within them. Hope?

Garrin the Atlantean attempts to parlay in the common tongue of Hyborian Men.

The vile priesthood (P1-3) pays the strange intruders no heed. Bony fingers trace mystic symbols in the air. Cracked lips chant ritual invocations to the Demon God.

But the great, malformed things that were once Verulian men (F4-8) suddenly wheel toward the adventurers, raising axes, swords and inhuman voices! Their words - if that's what they are - are unrecognizable. But their murderous intent is clear!

Garrin abandons all pretense of subterfuge, attacking the nearest creature (F5 I think).

To hit with +2 Longsword [1d20+2] = 13+2 = 15; damage sm [1d8+2] = 6+2 = 8; damage l [1d12+2] = 4+2 = 6

Cruloc

Cruloc hurls his cloak to the ground and charges toward the sacrificial wench with skin of alabaster!

Charging attack w/ longsword [1d20+4] = 7+4 = 11 (F4)

Xorxen moves into position behind the priests and awaits the outcome of the others actions.

If any of them appears to start casting at his friends, he thrusts his javelin into their back. R3 If they continue to show no interest in the invasion, he holds his attack to see what happens next.

Sorry about the confusing font. The priests are northernmost, 1, 2 and 3. Then from there, clockwise around the pit, are the faceless guardians, 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8.

Bluetongue, likewise, I think you meant F5. F6 is out of position for Loche. Apologies, everyone.
