Gilly quickly ties an old rag around her nose and mouth, unslings her pick, and hurries to the right, hoping to circle behind the troll, screened by the smoke.
"Freaking wizards!" she growls to Red, who is loping along beside her. "Still, they got their uses I reckon."

Once she sees the troll, she wades in and attacks, as does Red.
Pick Attack: [1d20] = 6 Damage [2d4+1] = 6+1 = 7 :x
Red Bites: [1d20] = 13 Damage [2d4] = 4
Winter is coming...

Naruthirdor's eyes widen as he sees the others charge toward the creatures, but not in surprise. He moves forward and north a bit, trying to get within 30 feet of that large fire. But he won't move outside the protection of the brawnier party members. Probably hanging close to Therone.
This is a game about killing things and taking their stuff so you can become more powerful in order to kill bigger things and take even better stuff.
Alethan: I'm good with NOT pressing our luck this time.
mjulius: That's how I know I'm home.
Pulpatoon: The whole point of PbP is to take the scheduling pressure off the game. We're just chatty because we're so eager!
Scott308: ...everyone should be reminded of just how wonderful the people they play games with here can be in real life.
Leitz: Quality and quantity wise, I think US is the best I've seen.
Paladin: I can promise terror, glory, and riches...or a quick and brutal death.
Inferno: Come on! That's was Vicar's Head, a completely different doomed village!
Rex: I can move to the wait list to let someone else into the game.

The Elven King's Halls, Mirkwood Forest, Rhovanion, Middle Earth
Night. March 19, the First Year of the Fourth Age
Wet, rainy, cold

Near the Elven King's Halls, Mirkwood Forest is burning.

Through scorching heat and roiling clouds of black smoke, half the company advances on the fearsome shadow of a troll, disappearing from the sight of those who wait behind!

Past wood-elves slain and bloody upon the fire-blackened ground, past the arrow-riddled corpses of the hateful, leering orcs, they advance.

But alas, the element of surprise is not theirs. The gigantic troll is ready for them!

It looms over them, a vast menace of terror; large beyond measurement, frightful beyond imagining, terrible, monstrous and evil!

It grips a massive stone hammer and its misshapen maw roars in defiance and hate, loud enough for their friends to hear above the flames!

Suddenly, Folco and the group lying in wait see vague shapes emerging through the shifting smoke! (at the ?'s)

Actions?!

Map:

One square = 10 feet.
Circle of light marks 30' visibility in the smoke.
PCs on the west (left) half of the map cannot see PCs on the east (right) half of the map, and vice versa.

Non-required Reading (rolls and rulings):
Troll surprised? (1-3): [1d6] = 4 No.
Party surprised? (1): [1d6] = 3 No. Not even those away from the rangers.
The party doesn't get a free round of combat on the troll. Those free attacks don't happen, and so those rolls are lost.

Gilda Ironfoot

Having battled and avoided trolls in the tunnels of her Grey Mountain home, Gilly rushes forward, getting in close to the troll, making it easier for her to do some damage while making it harder for the troll to hit her (-4 to AC). "IRONFOOT!" she shouts, swinging her pick with all her might...
Initiative: [1d6] = 4
Footman's Pick: [1d20] = 18 Damage: [2d4+1] = 7+1 = 8

Red rushes in alongside her, biting at the trolls legs...
Red Bites: [1d20] = 4 Damage [2d4] = 2
Winter is coming...

Elbenarin is surprised by the troll emerging from the fog of war! His blade misses it's mark!

Long Sword Attack [1d20] = 5 (THACO=19)
Long Sword Damage = S/M: [1d8] = 7 / L: [1d12] = 4

note: Rangers get +1hp/level of extra damage vs giants (trolls in this case) should it apply..

Therone

Therone holds a nocked arrow on her bow, fretting at the sounds coming from where the troll was last seen.

Come, friends. We should join them. A troll is nothing to be trifled with.

Elbenwin smiles as he raises sword and shield his cloak flapping in the wind

Come vile spawn of Melkor face a true blood son of Numenore

He dances in slashing at the trolls torso.

[1d20] = 17
[1d12] = 1 +2 for ranger level (3 damage)

Hoping he hasn't been seen yet, by the troll or by the oncoming threat, Folco dashes for the rocks and tries to hide in their shadows for an upcoming sneak attack.

ChubbyPixie wrote:“A threat from the north, friends,” warns Gliwennen.
"And from the east, " says Tinuwen. She moves to the east far enough to get in long bow range, firing at the new arrivals (if indeed they are orcs). If she cannot identify them, she instead fires at the troll.

To hit with arrow [1d20+4] = 15+4 = 19

Damage from arrow [1d6] = 2

If she can shoot again this round:
To hit with arrow [1d20+4] = 20+4 = 24

Damage from arrow [1d6] = 2

Pockets, hearing the hateful roar, is still very curious about the troll, and his instinct is to approach to actually bring the creature into view, but the appearance of a vague shape come into his actual site forces him to reconsider. "Now what is this new... thing?" he wonders to himself.

He quietly moves to adjust his position, placing the rock he's covered behind between himself and whatever this new creature is.

Glasik Ironfoot

Roaring back at the troll, Glasik swings his axe wildly, his adrenaline perhaps throwing his aim off.

Naruthirdor cautiously moves forward with the rest of the party. He draws his dagger and, with a frown, starts to call to mind the words to cast curing spells... just in case. He knows his forté isn't in attacking.

He'll move up behind Therone, not enter the action but look for opportunity to confuse the troll.

The Elven King's Halls, Mirkwood Forest, Rhovanion, Middle Earth
Night. March 19, Year One of the Fourth Age
Wet, rainy, cold

Within the maelstrom of smoke and flame, the uncertain periphery of the heroes' battlefield shifts and swirls with the whim of the wind!

To the east, more vile goblin men, armed with jagged sword and spear, unexpectedly appear from out of the writhing veil of ebon mist! (O4, O5)

And to the north, lurking shapes of vicious hateful wargs suddenly emerge against the billowing clouds of orange and black! (W1, W2)

Wolf and orc; they are all of them astonished to see armed resistance still standing among the massacre of the wood-elves!

The two young hobbits of the company quickly scamper to take cover behind rocks, hiding from the emerging threats!

To the west, without hesitation, the golden elven sisters draw back their long bows and loose at the wargs coming through the smoke! Three of their arrows feather the first beast (W1), but it lives, snarling with malice and defiance!

Naruthirdor the elf leaves their side, moving east to catch up with the vanguard of the company, crossing the fire-blackened ground and passing through heat and smoke to behold a tremendous troll looming over his companions, raising a massive stone hammer over its misshapen monstrous head!

Startled by the monumental size of the giant terror, Glasik the dwarf and Elbenarin the ranger swing ax and sword wildly! Their kin, however, do not falter in the face of this horrifying evil!

"Come, vile spawn of Melkor! Face a true blood son of Numenor!" Elbenwin proclaims as his blade cuts the troll's vast chest!

Her dog barking at her side, Gilly the dwarf cries, "IRONFOOT!" and her pick sinks deep into the creature's trunk-like thigh!

The blackhearted monster roars in pain and hate and brings his immense hammer down in a devastating arc upon Gilly to exact a terrible revenge!
BOOOMM! The dwarven warrior narrowly averts the colossal hammer's deadly mass and it crashes into the ground, shaking the very earth beneath their feet!

Actions?!

Map:

One square = 10 feet.
Circle of light on the right marks 30' visibility in the smoke.

Re: Tinuewen's natural 20: There are no critical hits or fumbles in this game.
Wargs surprised? [1d6] = 2. Orcs surprised? [1d6] = 3 Orcs and wargs are surprised. This round they cannot take an action.
Party is not surprised by orcs and wargs, as per last round's roll for surprise.
Initiative: Troll: [1d6] = 1 Party wins.
Red the dog misses.
Troll attacks Gilly: [1d20] = 8, damage: [1d10] = 5 Troll misses.

Tinuwen fires off two more shots at the wounded warg (W1).

To hit with arrow [1d20+4] = 13+4 = 17

To hit with arrow [1d20+4] = 1+4 = 5

Damage from arrow [1d6] = 6

A mosquito flies into the elf maiden's mouth, spoiling her second shot.

Glasik Ironfoot

Moving to try gaining a better angle on his immense foe, Glasik is unfortunately somehow still unable to land a blow against his massive enemy.
Battle Axe (17): [1d20] = 7; Damage: [1d8+4] = 8+4 = 12
Apparently, the dice roller works for Sauron.
