Captain Dillon Wyse

The captain keeps a close eye on the indigenous group leading them, confident in his away team to keep notice of the surroundings. Once they arrive at the village he takes a quick look around both to ensure that their culture has not been compromised by the others and to spot characteristic abodes (i.e. chief's house, a meeting house, etc,)

The village is spaciously arranged along a wide central street of gently packed earth. At one end of the street, perhaps 20 metres distant, rests a single wide building, modest but elegant in its simplicity, built from a ruddy clay with wooden reinforcements. The road runs straight up to the building's wide door, which can fit three abreast. Another doorway, just as wide but ordained with a beautiful mosaic of particoloured stones, can also just be seen toward the edge of the building's right wing. Wide strips of heavy cloth—or perhaps animal skins dyed into brilliant hues—extend from roof to create little awnings that cover the walls all around the building in shade. It is easily the most decorative building in sight.

To village's high street stretches 60 metres in the other direction, ending in a simple wooden gate that opens onto the crop fields. The windmills are both along this bottom end of the village.

Marius is urgent to take the woman directly to the decorative building. 'We must take her to Fantor, the god of healing. He can save her, as your healer cannot,' he explains coldly. 'I have already seen him perform two miracles.'

Villagers begin gathering, forming a crowd around the group at a safe distance and chattering in confusion and awe. Some seem scared, and others seem shocked and angry. Even with the help of the universal translators it is difficult to tell whether the chatter is threatening or simply bewildered.

Soon an unexpected scene breaks out: a young man wearing an azure and gold headband leaps out of the crowd and wails when he sees the woman being carried. He attempts to throw himself on her body but is quickly grappled by another villager, who holds him back with words of comfort. Watrius seems particularly unmoved by the display, and pushes past the young man without sympathy, the two trading steely and bitter glances.

Captain Dillon Wyse

"Yes, lets take her to Fantor. Dillon says agreeably. When the young man jumps out of the crowd, Dillon gives Watrius a curious questioning look.

Though not a religious man, Security Officer Costello is excited to see a god. He and Ensign Abbott follow the others.

Dr. Ryerson:

Dr. Ryerson' scowls at Marius comment. He too could save the girl if he had beamed the girl to his sick bay. But bringing an unknown alien aboard could endanger the rest of the crew. Instead he bites his tongue and proceeds with the others to see this witch doctor.

Commander Nadix Ar Eth, Science Officer:

The Edosian explorer's three legs keep up with the away team's pace. His yellow eyes widen as he absorbs the amazing sights of this unique indigenous culture. His three hands adjust his tricorder to scan for new anomalous readings, technology or energy sources, careful to avoid the Rod of Life.
Edosians should really have three eyes, to go with their arms, legs, fingers and toes.

LCDR Dale Collins; Helmsman

Dale winces in sympathy as he looks over at Dr. Ryerson as the alien insults his abilities; but he keeps his mouth shut and his focus on ensuring the party is not surprised by any hostile moves the aliens may make....

The party makes its way down the street toward the side entrance of the large building, presumably where the god Fantor resides. The confused crowd follows closely, keeping a respectful distance. The young man in the azure and gold headbands follows at the head of the crowd, but does not create any further scenes.

As the party passes through the doorway of the building the crowd stops short, attempting to peer in through the doorway until a guard throws the outer curtains shut. The interior is spartan, but palatial. The walls are covered in thin lavender cloth that catches the soft light coming in through a sunroof, and slim braziers cradle tiny flames which seem to do little more than add to the ambience. An empty bronze altar rests in the middle of the room, obviously missing its prized object. Several Coxans of both sexes glide across the large room silently going about their business, swathed in airy periwinkle robes and sporting bronze tiaras. Soon they begin to notice the newcomers and stop short, staring blankly and awkwardly.

Watrius signals to one of them with his severe voice. 'Go, beckon Fandon, Hemda is need of healing!' The boy-faced young man before him hesitates only momentarily before dashing off into the next room. The others continue to stare wordlessly as the woman Hemda is gently laid onto a nearby couch or bench of some kind. The Coxan carrying the Rod carefully returns it to its place on the altar.

The boy-faced young man returns, throwing the lavender curtain to the side and looking about to locate the woman. Behind him, two tall humanoids in silver suits of advanced materials stride into the room, one with a full medikit over his shoulder. As they turn and lock eyes with the crew of the Janus the pair freeze, for a moment unable to do much more than stare wide-eyed and expressionless. The man's Adam's apple bobs nervously along his throat. They look to each other for unspoken support then, taking in a deep breath and gathering their wits, attempt to push past the crew to the injured woman, their eyes to the floor as though pretending not to notice the crew's presence.

Commander Nadix Ar Eth, Science Officer:

As they cross the village, the Edosian explorer says softly under his breath to the away team, "Gentlemen, the Coxan civilization is in most ways typical of bipedal cultures transitioning from a stone age into a bronze age, marked by a few unusual technological developments: crude wind power solutions, and rope-and-pulleys utilized in admirably creative ways. As yet there does not seem to be any reason to suspect that these developments are anything more than the natural, unpredictable advances that occur in any society.

"As a culture, the Coxans appear to unpredictably sway between complete stoicism and overly dramatic displays of emotion. It is obvious we are observing complex social mores at work, that we are not yet able to understand."

Once in the "temple," Nadix reports quietly, "The tricorder detects very low traces of plasma discharge, and one or more phasers have been fired in this area in the very recent past."

When the human gods enter with technologically advanced attire and equipment, Nadix is taken aback. The Prime Directive is his gospel. These two strangers embody a violation of everything he holds sacred. Yet, the deferential alien awaits the Captain's response, ready to support his lead.

Captain Dillon Wyse

Wyse watches as the pair divert their gaze and move forward to attend to Hemda. As they pass, Wyse hooks his hand around the arm of the woman. "Captain Dillon Wyse of the United Federation of Planets Starship Janus. It doesn't require both of you to handle a standard med-pac. If you would please join me, I have a few questions to ask you. Mr. Collins and Costello, if you would please join us. Mr. Nadex, if you would please stay here with the good doctor and make sure Hemda is taken proper care of. Mr. Abbott, you will wait here as well." The captain then gently directs her back the way they (the pair) first came.

Dr. Ryerson:

The doctor gets as close as he can and observes the alien medics without getting in their way. Without his medical tricorder he will have to guess the treatment given to Hemda.

Dale looks with a mixture of curiosity and suspicion at the silver-garbed human pair; but he nods and replies to the Captain's orders with a quick; "Aye sir"; and moves over with him; keeping an alert eye out for any more surprises....

[CLOSED] Away Team: Village Palace

Inside the Coxan Council Hall
Stardate 2271.3.22: 1730h

The woman is led away without putting up a fight. She certainly seems bewildered. The adjoining room is simultaneously larger and more constricting than the 'temple' room that was just left. Furniture, potted plants and free-standing tapestries of simple design are strategically placed to give the hall a confined, intimate atmosphere. Nearby some crudely made but soft pillows are tossed along the floor, around a wood and silver bowl of exotic fruits. Another doorway, again hidden behind a tumble of cloth, can be seen toward the rear of the chamber; through it soft music and playful chatter can be heard, and the occasional shape of a humanoid can be seen walking past the semi-transparent door cloth. Where walls of the other room were decorated with soft, light-catching cloths of lavender, the hue of this room is a pale, powder blue. As the crew members look into the woman's face, however, the soft blues of the surrounding room seem to fade, almost confusing the eye into seeing shades of ruby.

Image

The woman sits at the edge of a piece of furniture next to the food display, and with a sigh of resignation pulls a tawny fruit that can best be described as a cross between a papaya and a banana, but rather than eat it she begins to roll it between her fingers absentmindedly. She seems lost amid conflicting thoughts.

Collins and Costello make their customary visual sweep of the area and do not find anyone else in the room for the moment.

Stardate 2271.3.22: 1730h

The group split up to deal with the turn of events. Collins and Costello follow the Captain into the other room to interrogate the woman, while Gareb, Nadix, Dr. Ryerson, and Abbot stay where they are to keep an eye on the man.

The man sits himself down next to Hemda and begins unpacking a handheld medical scanner and spray applicator. He seems intent on giving the crew a cold shoulder and sets straight to work, until First Officer Gareb takes control and initiates an exchange by standing all too close and forcefully resting his hand on the man's right shoulder.

'Please, continue your administrations, doctor,' he says, making an inviting gesture with his other hand that seems at odds with his stern voice, 'but while you're to it I'd like to know your name, under which code of legislation you operate, and the registration of your ship.'

The man looks up to Gareb with a set jaw and resolved stare. His eyes briefly break their lock on Gareb, flicking toward the village acolytes or servants milling about in the background. 'I am Fantor. This woman is hurt, please, I must not be interrupted.'

To keep the narrative clean, Dale Collins, Bud Costello, and the Captain will have their action momentarily moved to: Away Team: Village Palace (Wyse, Collins, Costello)
Edit: Need to double-check names as I read them! Fantor, not Fandor or Fandon. Next thing you'll start thinking these stories are all just made up!

Dr. Ryerson:

Standing patiently and out of the way of Mr. Fantor, Ned is well aware that the man's equipment is no better that his own medical kit in which he brought. If Hemda is to be truly helped she needs a proper medical facility like the Janus sickbay. But not wanting to interfere at this moment, he give Mr. Fantor space to asses his patient. Perhaps he will transfer Hemda to a proper medical facility once his initial triage is complete. He watches and waits for Fantor's assessment.
