They draw closer.
He can hear their panting, their incessant yapping and yammering, their all too human barking laughter. He spares no glance behind, knowing it will not be long before their slavering muzzles close upon his flesh.
Ahead, through a break in the forest, he spots a crumbling wall, some long forgotten masonry now given over to the ravages of nature and time. He heaves himself up and scrambles over the collapsing rampart, landing on what looks to be the grounds of an old monastery.
The ravenous dogmen will scale the wall themselves in mere moments. He has to act quickly.
Frantically, he scans the area and spies a large building to the left, the squatting remains of a weathered temple. There he can at least make a stand to die like a man, to die like the soldier he is.
Rushing into the temple, he takes cover behind the large altar on the far side of the room and presses his back against the cold stone. As he readies his bow, he is surprised to find that the altar slides forward to reveal a set of moldy, stone stairs leading down into darkness.
The dogmen cautiously stalk into the temple and fan out to flank their prey. Severely outnumbered, Abijah Dun knows his only hope is to plunge into the darkness below. He gulps a lungful of air and descends.

There is a noticeable drop in temperature as the party eases their way down the lengthy flight of stairs and into the bowels of the monastery. Osprey runs his hands along the walls in search of secret doors but notices nothing out of the ordinary.
After about 40’ the stairs end, and the group faces an open door up ahead. Before anyone can investigate what lies beyond, pounding footsteps are heard from the top of the stairs.
A tall man, bearing a scar that runs the length of his face, appears at the top of the landing. He rushes down the stairs toward the party.
In pursuit, is a pack of six voracious gnolls.
