Into the Lair

#1 Post by Solinor »

The party takes up positions in the mud churned room at the bottom of the stairs. Kraden's torch illuminates thirty feet down each tunnel and the keen eyed non-humans can see a bit further. Some quick investigation reveals the west tunnel ends in a door, the east seems to turn a corner, and the south ends in darkness.

Occasionaly drops of water from the ceiling land on each of you.

Otherwise all is quiet.

Which direction and what is marching order?

As the party sits idly in the room a massive snake slithers along the wall, coming from the west passage, it turns and begins to make its way up the stairs.

Does this mean it's passed us?
This is a game about killing things and taking their stuff so you can become more powerful in order to kill bigger things and take even better stuff.
Alethan: I'm good with NOT pressing our luck this time.
mjulius: That's how I know I'm home.
Pulpatoon: The whole point of PbP is to take the scheduling pressure off the game. We're just chatty because we're so eager!
Scott308: ...everyone should be reminded of just how wonderful the people they play games with here can be in real life.
Leitz: Quality and quantity wise, I think US is the best I've seen.
Paladin: I can promise terror, glory, and riches...or a quick and brutal death.
Inferno: Come on! That's was Vicar's Head, a completely different doomed village!
Rex: I can move to the wait list to let someone else into the game.

(ooh! let's see what's behind door #1!)

As quietly as possible, Etruna approaches the western tunnel door and puts her ear up next to it listening for any noises on the other side.

Yes, it doesn't seem hostile and has simply moved past the party. But the thing is frighteningly large.

You do not hear anything but the stench of swamp gas is very strong as you stand by the door.

Just as quietly, Etruna returns to the group. In a low voice she shares, "I could hear nothing behind the door, but the air around the door stunk of swamp gas. If gasses are collecting behind the door, opening it and releasing the gas into the corridor could be dangerous."

She pauses for a moment and then adds, "I wonder what is causing the gas to collect behind that door."

(OOC: Where is Whiskers? Is he still with Etruna?)

"Um, should we prepare for company, or just press on... I'm assuming we aren't entering unnoticed," Nuonne says quietly with a grim smile.

Kraden silently nods his head in agreement. He watches the snake pass by them, hoping it has already ate and is not hungry. In a hushed whisper, he responds in turn. "Halmod said that one of the swampmen was sent to inform someone named Garath of our presence. Mayhap this Garath will be making his way toward the entrance as we speak. We should definitely remain vigilant and prepared." The ranger remains at the intersection with the others, waiting for Rondar and/or Halmod to issue a signal.

I am going to need Halmod and Rondar to give me a tunnel direction and how far they wish to go. I know Rondar said the third tunnel but not sure what that is. :)

Etruna advises, "The longer we wait, the more chance this Gareth may arrive. While we must be take care, we can't afford to wait like frightened rabbits." Addressing Kraden specifically, "Choose a corridor and see where it takes us. The greatest danger lies in doing nothing."

well halmod said he went east, ankar said he went to the "middle" tunnel which I guess means south, so rondar will take the 3rd and final tunnel west. he will sneak ahead in the dark around 100 yards scouting.

(OOC: Perhaps I'm confused, but I thought the west tunnel visibly ended with a door that Etruna went up to and smelled swamp gas. Or is Etruna in another dungeon altogether? :o )

The west passage is the door with swamp gas.

Halmod is standing just inside the east passage as Rondar moves past him into the tunnel which goes north and with a 10' shift contines west. The west passage is filled with doors, some of which are open.

The #7 passage turns a corner. #8 continues into darkness past the doors.

UPDATED dungeon map.

Viscata in a low voice, "For what it is worth I suggest the swamp gas door, it seems less open and since we may be outnumbered if they come at us in force the number of directions they can come at is is reduced. There is also a door we can barricade to restrict access to us. The gas may be dangerous but we can check it out carefully."

Etruna replies with caution, "Swamp gas can be flammable. Care should be taken with our torches, lest opening that door could unleash a fire trap upon the group."

When Kraden hears this, he holds his torch away from him to whatever side is farthest from the door at the end of the short hall. He is anxious to get underway, though at a loss as to which way they should go.

He whispers back to his compatriots as he waits at the intersection. "Tis true we should be careful not to get surrounded or even trapped down here. Keeping our route out of here clear would be prudent, in the event we must retreat quickly. But we need to do something quickly. Although we might have lost the element of surprise, we cannot just wait here. We must pick a direction and move forward. We should also try and stick together down here..." The ranger trails off as he looks to the stairs and hopes that the giant snake has not turned around and is coming back their way.

The giant snake has completed its ascent and disappeared from view.

As Rondar advances down the hall (#8) he passess some open doors which at a glance appear to be unkempt barracks. Rondar reaches the t-section and looks north to a door, and at the end of the south passage it turns west.

The complex is quiet otherwise.
