Chpt. 3 Riddles & Clever Wizards

#1 Post by SlyFox »

Nothing has happened with the materials that have been put into the bowls as yet, but Fanxyl and Adel have received visions from their gods that has given them a few more clues, that they need to hang on to the flawed gemstones that they have found to open one passage and to move on to the room farther north to find some tapestries with more clues to open another passage. They have shared their visions with the rest of the party while Trendt, Freddie and Sammy are taking care of the spiders in the rooms behind them. From the sound, the outcome is going in their favor and things are going well.

The party moves farther north where the rooms and corridors are completely dark. There is a hallway at the other end of the room with the statue ladies that goes ahead about 20' then turns left, heading west. Ten feet after the turn, there is a wooden door that is shut. The two kobolds that are now helping Trendt, Sammy and Freddie, have told the party that there is nothing behind this door to worry about, just empty rooms. So far, they have proven to have been telling the truth and have been very helpful with the battle against their own kind. It seems as though they are truly trustworthy, unwitting slaves to the dead kobolds' village raidings and they profess they didn't know it was wrong.

The closed wooden door faces the party quietly. The only sound heard is coming from behind the party, Freddie's short sword clanging against the stone floor as he chops up giant centipedes.

Llewelln DeNonce, Lawyer-Assassin, still isn't fully willing to trust the two helpful kobolds. For all he knows, they are members of a rival kobold tribe in the caves, a tribe that might job out to attack the party.

He listens at the door for any noise.

Llewellyn: Listen at Doors: [1d6] = 3

Llewellyn hears complete silence behind the door.

Llewellyn retakes his position in the middle of the party, just behind the kobolds. If they're lying, they'll pay for the lie quickly.

Dakara takes the rear guard with the mule while Corun moves up front and tries the door. Unlocked, it opens easily, revealing a room up ahead after a ten foot walk of hall. The room is dark and looks to be 20' x 30' with yet another wooden door just opposite the one just walked through.

There is a large stone alter along the northern wall, on which sits a large wooden bowl. Beside that bowl is a silver dagger, easily identified by the brilliant shining of the metal. It looks to be untouched and untarnished.

On the wall above the stone alter is a tapestry, depicting three scenes. In the first, there is a man slitting his wrist with a silver dagger and letting his blood fall into the large bowl. The next scene depicts the same man carrying this bowl to a woman who holds yet another bowl. The third scene shows the man pouring his blood from the bowl he carries into the the bowl held by the woman.

"I've never much cared for tapestry art , and this does nothing to change my mind" remarks Adel. "This dagger looks too pristine and inviting" thinks Adel out loud. "Perhaps it's trapped." he doesn't offer an explanation as to why there's no evidence of previous raiders being caught by the trap, but he searches anyway.

Biblo, mage

"Let our kobold retrieve the dagger for us," says Biblo, thinking of them as expendable tools.

The silver dagger gleams beautifully in the torch and lantern light. (Sans the scabbard.)

The kobolds are back in the spiders' lair with Trendt, Sammy, Freddie and Rubesca, just a couple of rooms away and easily heard.

"We would seem to have a tool needed to fill one of the bowls held by the statutes," observes Llewellyn, "and instructions on its use. How considerate."

Gwennethel, Elf Druid

Gwennethel walks over to the dagger and picks it up, thinking it is probably harmless. Just in case she decides it would be wise to try to detect if there is any magic in this dagger. Holding on to her blue crescent pendant with her left hand and the dagger in her right, she speaks a detect spell in her druidic language.

Gwennethel casts "Detect Magic" while holding the silver dagger, but she finds that it is simply that - a silver dagger, strangely untouched and untarnished. Perhaps the kobolds in the cave had no need of it, wishing to keep the lower ranks using rusty daggers instead of this one as a matter of principle. The silver dagger is completely harmless and holds no magic properties of any kind.

Gwennethel, Elf Druid

"This dagger should go to the one who is willing to use it next, if need be. Who would like it? There could be other hints we may need also. Maybe we should continue looking in other rooms before we go and spill more blood."

While the party debates who will take the dagger, Adel opens the west door and peers inside, lantern aloft.

"It is a pretty dagger," says Llewellyn, "but I am not particularly enamored of the obligations that would come with it. Someone else should take it."

Gwennethel, Elf Druid

Sheathing the dagger for future use, Gwennethel joins Adel in looking through the west door.
