Re: Town Business
Quirin will seek out the hunters and chat them up. He's generally curious to know what they hunt, with what weapon (bow, I assume?) and anything out of the ordinary they've come across.
He's also curious to see if any of them are willing to come along with him on a "nature walk" to explore the areas just outside the town.
Hopefully, at the end of the conversation(s), he'll have a good idea of how they rank on skill level and intelligence.
Curious about intelligence in case I try to Charm one and talk him into coming with me.

Re: Town Business
Quirin finds the hunters at various times and locations over the course of the day and evening and gets some information about them:
Jonas (bow hunter) - human male, 31 years old, average intelligence
Adrienne (spear hunter) - human female, 22 years old, slightly above average intelligence
Lyran (bow hunter) - human male, 27 years old, slightly above average intelligence
All three have been as far out as the forest to the north, all three have seen but not interacted with the goblins, and all of them have reported large wolves traversing the moors around the town. Adrienne once fought two of them, killing one and injuring another to drive it off but sustaining a major bite wound to her leg that has healed badly and given her quite a limp.
Any of them would be willing to make an exploratory trip out of town as far as the near reaches of the forest for a price of 1 gold piece, but warn that they will not be party to provoking the goblins or "picking fights" with anyone. They would all come with their own supplies.
This research takes a day, so mark off some lodging per the prices in this thread for your time.

March 2, 1 VC
Quirin, Varas and Dorvar are admitted by late afternoon to an audience with Arch-Duke.
"What can I do to help you fine fellows?" He asks.

Re: Town Business
Quirin will bow and then say, Lord Vaul, my companions and I are interested in learning more about the scourge of the goblins and what we can do to help the town and, of course, collect the reward.

Re: Town Business
Varas follows suit, bowing. "In addition, good sir Duke, I would be interested in hearing the exact terms under which the conditions of the reward would be considered satisfied. From the maps I've seen, there's a wide expanse of land to the north. Respectfully, surely we couldn't be expected to eradicate every last goblin?"
Re: Town Business
The duke seems slightly taken aback by some of these questions.
"Well, my short-term goal isn't eradication of these vermin: merely to drive them out of the moor and the forest so that this settlement can develop without the threat of a goblin raid. I'm convinced the only reason they haven't struck so far is that they don't realize how few of us there are and what a vulnerable position we'd be in if they attacked full force.
"That being said, the bounty is for someone who can present convincing proof of having done this, whether it's a hundred goblin scalps and a purging fire, or something less obvious.
"Beyond that, as you mention the rest of the region, I will always be willing to reward those who assist me in identifying and exploiting opportunities out there for strengthening our settlement and the arch-duchy as a whole."

Re: Town Business
"Very well, thank you, duke. I have no love for goblins. If it's all the same to you, I imagine ears would be easier to collect, and be much less messy" smiles Varas. "Do you know how the goblins are organized? Small dispersed camps or a big lair...or is that something we are tasking with discovering?"
Re: Town Business
"Frankly, I do not know. They seem well-organized, and have been spotted all through the moor except to the east and of course in the goblin forest. Had I more personnel at my disposal, I would have learned this by now. As things stand, you and others like you are my personnel for the time being."

Re: Town Business
"Thank you for your time, my lord. I expect we'll depart tomorrow, and Skadi willing, will return with a bagful of goblin ears." If no others in his party have any questions, Varas will depart for the tavern for one more ale to calm his nerves ahead of the journey tomorrow.
Re: Town Business
Ok, back to the tavern with he, where the boy Wendall awaits companionship.
Re: Town Business
Will Quirin be retaining the services of any of the hunters for the upcoming expedition?
Re: Town Business
I think not. The group will probably be too violent for the Hunter's tastes, plus I need to save the coin.Keehnelf wrote:Will Quirin be retaining the services of any of the hunters for the upcoming expedition?
Re: Town Business
In preparation for the following day's expedition, Quirin will buy a bedroll, three days of fresh rations, and three days of iron rations.
Re: Town Business
Total cost comes to: 2g2s +20% markup for an additional 4s4c, so 2g 6s 4c is the final cost.
Re: Town Business
Herrin will take a bit of time in town to stock back up on rations (+4 days), then hang out in the tavern during the day, waiting for adventuring-types who might join the expedition to the wolves.
When the rest of the party is rested and town business concluded, he will see who wants to go see the Duke.

Re: Town Business
deducted 3g 5c for 5 days rations and a nights stay in the inn's common room
In the morning, Njord will go with Herrin to see the duke.

Re: Town Business
Herrin and Njord get an audience with the duke just before noontime, after they've done their food shopping. He looks across his massive wood desk covered in scrolls and sheaves of parchment with an incisive look on his face.
"Tell me, what have you discovered of these goblins? Is there a way to rid ourselves of their menace?"
