Dungeon Master:

After the Conversation with Chief Fonok the party decides to have a look at the broken bridge area.

A shorter and thinner bridge stands shattered over this section of the quarry pit.
The ravages of war and time have taken their toll.
The quarry pit drops off less steeply here.

Arn decides to search around the north end of the bridge, as he attempts to look under it, two dire rats spring upon him!

Surprise:
Arn: [1d6] = 5
Dire Rats: [1d6] = 3

Dire Rat #1: [1d20] = 6 : Attempt to bite Arn is blocked!
Dire Rat #2: [1d20] = 15 : Attempt to bite Arn is swatted away in time!

Dungeon Master:

Elusev's Arrow hits Dire Rat #2 for 8 HP of PBR damage skewering it, so that it's no longer moving.

'Egads! Vile little creatures!' Arn takes a swing at the remaining dire rat.

Attack with long sword: [1d20+1] = 19+1 = 20
Damage—S/M: [1d8+1] = 6+1 = 7, L: [1d12+1] = 3+1 = 4

Finally, a connecting hit!

Dungeon Master:

Ok, i'll treat this as a combat just between Arn & the Dire Rats with the archers having had free action.

That said Arn takes care of Dire Rat #1 after the rodent gets 1 more attack on him:

Dire Rat #1 bites Arn! [1d20] = 18
For [1d4] = 3 Hit Points of damage!

At this point, Arn can continue to check under the broken bridge if he wishes.

Arn does in fact continue examining under the bridge, muttering curses at all rodentkind to himself.

Elusev hops down with Arn, extending his help, "Perhaps we can search the area together, another pair of eyes to look for clue or danger can't hurt." he gives the man a grin.

"Is that dog that showed up still here?" Assuming it is, she will turn to the dog, "Can you lead us to Idhrenwen?"

Dungeon Master:

As Arn & Elusev again tries to have a look under the bridge, 2 more dire rats appear.

However, they do note a figure in a rotted cloak & leather armor crouched under there.

When Cayley mentions Idhrenwen to the cooshee dog, it acknowledges her & moves in an excited 'follow me' fashion.

Surprise roll on the 2 new Dire rats:

Party: [1d6] = 6
Dire Rats: [1d6] = 4

No one is surprised though the Dire Rats attack Arn & Elusev first:

Dire Rat #3: Attacking Arn: [1d20] = 14 : Missed Arn!
Dire Rat #4: Attacking Elusev: [1d20] = 1 Fumble: [1d100] = 5 : Missed Elusev & was kicked away by Elusev to be stunned for [1d4] = 2 segments!

Procyon throws his javelin towards the rat #1.
How many times must a man look up
Before he can see the sky?
Yes, ’n’ how many ears must one man have
Before he can hear people cry?
Yes, ’n’ how many deaths will it take till he knows
That too many people have died?
The answer, my friend, is blowin’ in the wind
The answer is blowin’ in the wind

Dungeon Master:

That was a fumble so let's see here: 1d100= [1d100] = 79 : Result on the chart is: Hit Self for double damage! Ehh, that would make it that you stabbed yourself in the foot with the javelin as you tried to toss it!

Elusev hops over and attempts to kill the now stunned rat.

Two handed Sword, To Hit:[1d20] = 7, Damage: S/M[1d10+1] = 1+1 = 2, L[3d6+1] = 7+1 = 8

Well that's a roll...

It's always great seeing a couple of fully grown adventurers embarrass themselves trying to hit rats.

Tuireann:

Tuireann with Tewahutes in tow strolls up to Caley from the goblin fort.
"I found him. He wandered off to have a snack. Does Procyon have a Javelin in his foot? What's going on here? What are they doing searching in a rats nest. Please tell me that's not dinner."

Can I say that I tripped on the terrains and stabbed myself on the shoulder instead? Sounds better than standing still and stabbing myself.
I have no idea why I am laughing.
