Ch. 5: The Pillared Throne Room

#1 Post by Zhym »

Odilo takes Quinn's longsword and slides its blade into the middle slot in the door. Following Odilo's example, Urdak inserts his broadsword back into the left slot. Bagrin, after a short delay to wonder if his weapon is long enough, puts the blade of his short sword in the remaining slot.

As soon as all three slots have swords in them, the metal door swings open. You are relieved to discover that the door does not destroy your weapons.

The door swings into a great hall with pink marble floors, a 30' ceiling, and such depth and breadth that your lights do not reach the opposite walls. Dozens of massive columns fill the chamber.

Skarlos can't help but let a "wow" escape his lips. He stares around in wonder.

"I don't think this tomb will ever stop surprising me! So who will go in first?"

Odilo hands Quinn back his sword and bows appreciatively "Thank you Quinn for the use of your sword." Odilo looks around at the new room "Hmm Zhym my unseen servant could go first provided he has not dispersed yet. Unfortunately I believe my spell has expired. Ah but I forget I still have my wizards eye I can use. What do you think gents should I cast wizards eye or save it for later use?"

The Dwarf lights another torch, and throws it as far as his good arm allows into the darkness to his left. Zat's a miner's eye. He grins at his own humorous reply.

You retrieve your swords and look on in wonder at the mighty chamber before you. "So," asks Skarlos, "Who will go in first?"

Odilo suggests use of a magical wizard's eye. Urdak makes a dwarvish joke about a "miner's eye" and throws a torch into the room. Its light still doesn't reach the other side of the chamber, but it does illuminate a set of low steps to the southeast.

"And into the columned hall you'll come, and there the throne that's key and keyed."

Quinn will slowly enter the room, expecting to see a throne on the raised dais. He will check for floor traps as he walks.

Odilo will wait until at least two of the burlier fighter types go in first and then will enter the columned room. Chuckling "You are such a funny one master dwarf." from his robe poket it almost sounds like a pigeon is also laughing.

The Dwarf follows suit with a second torch to the right of the doorway, into the room a ways.

Max range for a thrown club is 30', so Urdak (or anyone else) won't be able to lob a torch more than about 40' into the room.

Bagrin, retrieving his sword, looks at it with new appreciation before sheathing it. "Aye lads, now we're getting somewhere." Grinning from ear to ear, the little gnome casts detect magic and follows Quinn further into the hall, toward the dais, keeping a sharp eye out and warning the others of what he sees.

Urdak tosses another torch into the room (mark both torches off your sheet, please), aiming between the pillars to the right of the door. With the added illumination, you can see that the south wall of the room is 50' away from you.

Quinn steps into the room, checking for floor traps as he walks. "Apprehensio hocus-pocus," says Bagrin before following Quinn into the hall. The gnome immediately sees that the columns all radiate magic!

McCloud also steps into the great hall, leaving Urdak and Skarlos the only ones still waiting outside the door. McCloud shines his bullseye lantern about the huge chamber. You get fleeting looks at the dimensions and features of this room. The eastern end of the room still lies in darkness, but you now know that the room stretches 110' from north to south. To the north you see a green devil face, much like the one you saw in the entry hall, about 24' above the floor. You also see two doors to the north. At the south end of the room, an obsidian throne stands on a huge black dais. Odilo can see that it, too, radiates magic, as does something resting on the throne. You cannot make out what it is from this distance, but it glitters in McCloud's lantern light.

The Dwarf also struts into the room, peering about for any lurking danger. He looks to the others, then moves over to the second torch he threw, intending to launch it further into the dark areas.

2 torches marked off.

Odilo liking to be flashy from time to time takes out a bit of bat fur from one of his pockets and begins reciting the words to his spell Wizard Eye Shazam! and poof a floating eye. ;) Image he directs the eye up to the throne.

McCloud will shine his torch around the room, concentrating upon the throne. Cautiously he will approach it by heading south between the pillars and coming to the throne from the rear to check for traps and pits around it.

"Careful, lads," whispers Bagrin, "this little gnome sees death not far away. The pillars here are all painted with magic."

Bagrin waits and watches in fascination as Odilo's wizard eye checks out the throne ("You'll have to show me how to work that trick later on..."), but he keeps one good eye constantly flashing back to the devil face, just in case. If nothing jumps out at us from the throne, he'll go investigate the devil face and the door nearest to it, to see if they too have magic about them.

At this point the Dwarf will be in high battle mode, suspecting something to jump out at the party. Pick firmly in hand, he casts challenging glares about the room, growling occasionally.

Urdak and Skarlos step into the room. Urdak walks over to where he threw his second torch, and lobs it ahead of him, illuminating still more of the cavernous chamber. Still the light does not quite reach the far wall.

McCloud walks south and then east along the wall to approach the throne, shining his light around the room as he does. He searches around the throne for traps, finding none. The beam of his lantern reaches the east wall, finally revealing the full dimensions of the room. His lantern light also reveals something glittering orange in the southeast corner of the room.

Odilo brings about an invisible eye while Bagrin watches in fascination. The wizard sends the eye to look at the throne where McCloud already stands. The throne is inlaid with silver and ivory skulls. Its arms are shaped like fanged cobras. Upon the throne rest a crown and a scepter; these must be the objects from which Bagrin detected an aura of magic. The crown appears to be made of gold. The scepter is of electrum, with a gold ball at one end and a sillver knob at the other. Each of these items is obviously tremendously valuable: the crown would probably bring 25,000 gold and the scepter 12,500!

Bagrin investigates the green devil face and the door nearest to it. The devil face is too high up on the wall for the diminutive Bagrin to get a good look at it. The door, however, radiates magic and shimmers with a faint blue light when the gnome approaches it.

Skarlos heads towards the far, unilluminated corner - checking for pits on the way. Once he has ascertained where the far corner is he moves about 20 feet in from the doors and watches them and Bagrin's back.

Odilo suggests "I'd not touch those items in the throne, I have a bad feeling about them." then he turns and starts to scan the room with the wizard's eye going to investigate the strange pile of something off to the right of the throne (bottom right on the map) then going in a counter clockwise manner around the room.
